China and Gaza 11:58am on 06 Jan 2009 Is it possible for China, sinking deep in serious problems itstelf, to help solve a crisis which has been going on for decades and will continuse so for an another 100 years, to say the least?

On one side of the roundtable is a country that claims to have lost its land which must be taken back at all expense, whereas on the other side is a country that has enjoyed the mighty support of the world's sole superpower and also extends claim to the same piece of land.

How to broach the thorny topic of peaceful co-existence? If the goal is not a fantasy, it must be beyond the current abilities (national, military, diplomatic, etc.) of China to reach.

How China will perceive itself during the post-Games era will be influenced by the way other countries view China.

The influence of American pop-culture has reached almost every corner of the world. Why nobody has ever bothered to utter a word of criticism?

If you go to Australia, you will know that they barely have their own TV shows or films to boast and at the same time, few white Aussies have ever had any contact with the Indigenous.

Olympic predictions 1:04pm on 01 Aug 2008 Whether the Games will be a success or not, one thing is certain (it's my personal opinion) --- an invisible barrier has been erected between the young Chinese and the West.

China's Me generation surely will remember clearly every controversy revolving around the Games, from the inaccurate reporting on Tibet riots to the endless bickering over uncesored Internet access and to the leak of the opening ceremony footage (to top it all, the serious disruption of the torch realy at Paris).

I think it's going to take a long, long time for the cloud of mistrust hanging over the minds of China's loyal youth to dissipate.
Olympic arrivals 2:23pm on 28 Jul 2008 I have been to Beijing several times and I have to admit that pollution there is a bit of a problem.

The related departments must bring forward more measures to ensure air quality during the Olympics. These concerns of athletes and delegations are genuine and should and must be addressed seriously.

In the blog entry, it is also mentioned that journalists need to apply for many special passes in order to get around the Olympic venues. Commenting on this point, I would like to say the world is not that nice and Beijing merely tries its best to avert any accident.

If you think that's inconvenient, just think about the trouble Chinese students going to the UK to study have experienced. How many checks they need to go through to get the visa and how many documents they need to provide to get the visa?
New star 10:26am on 04 Jul 2008 I have been following James' reports for some time. Though every now and then he does write something that is rather subjective, on the whole the quality of his work is fairly good.

I can't understand why some readers are unhappy about this particular blog entry of James. And it seems to me that the following three sentences are especially contentious.

“It's not a bad achievement for someone who's ranked 133 in the world.”

“each had a suitably low-key, non-energy-sapping interest.”

“Tennis isn't (yet) a big sport in China”

From my personal point of view, I don’t find any of them against the fact. It is a truth that ZJ is ranked 133 in the world, in spite of various reasons. And I feel that James is not supposed to list these exact reasons one by one in his own blog, as he is not a sports commentator in the first place.

As regards the second sentence, my interpretation of James’ words is that Chinese athletes tend to keep a low profile and live a quiet life, as opposed to some big names in the West who always enjoy the spotlight of the media. What’s wrong with that? I don’t see it offensive at all.

The third and last sentence is as much self-clear as the first two ones. Indeed, tennis is still not as popular as other traditional sports such as soccer and basketball in China. And he even put the word “yet” in a pair of brackets, which pretty much indicates that he has some faith in the future of this game getting popularized there.

Sincerely hope James can continue to maintain high-standard professionalism in the future and objectively report on my home country.
Shutting us out? 00:36am on 14 Jun 2008 Guys, don't be mad at James. He is only a correspondent and obviously, he needs to make a living. So James has to write those reports that the Westerners would wish to read. There is nothing to blame him for.

The general picture is that the entire world of Western media is biased against China. Have you ever seen a single correspondent of CNN or New York Times report positively on any Chinese events?

Instead of wasting our breath with these Western news outlets, we must focus on our economic and social development (and of course, military modernisation as well).

When China becomes as wealthy as the US (surely one day she will), we can set up such organisations as Free Hawaii Association, Aboriginal Youth Association, and Scotland and Northern Ireland Studies Centre. We may even build a few radar stations in Cuba, and establish some secret prisons in Europe too.

Let them talk the talk and let us walk the walk. One day in the future, we're going to deal with them.
Buried under rubble 01:04am on 16 May 2008 One ignorant guy named Newborn_Khampa said earlier that s/he still has doubts as to whether Chinese govertnment is trying its best to rescue those people in the hard-hit areas in Sichuan Province.

To be frank, as a Chinese national, I was shocked and deeply angered by his irresponsible words.

Maybe he should have checked some related facts about this devastating earthquake first. Maybe he simply has no idea how vast and populated Sichuan Province is. Just don't expect a Chinese province to be as small as England or France in terms of sheer area.

We do have the largest army in the world, but remember they are called "the army of people's sons and brothers" among the Chinese. Every time there happens a natural disaster in the country like the heavy floods in 1998 and the snow disaster early this year, they would certainly be fighting on the frontline, saving lives and protecting properties.

What are American and British soldiers are doing these days? Policing the whole world? Occupying Iraq under a false claim of restoring "democracy and peace"? I suggest Newborn_Khampa should review some photos of the American soldiers taken after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
