Let's look at a few things...

"If you need the problems with the Registry explaining to you, then it's really not worth the effort."

Well no, you were asked and all you've done is evade the question and insult the person who asked you. I mean I know the advantages and disadvantages of the registry against, say, ini files but he may not.

So, please, enlighten him and if you can't do so then I'm quite happy to explain the pros and cons.

"Apple - record profits, record number of Macs sold, totally bucking the trend."

Ok, what's the split of profit between Macs and iPhones/iPods? Not that it matters - all profit means is that the company makes money out of what it sells and since Apple have a margin of 35% or so they make more profit.

As for numbers, there were 3.05 million Macs sold last quarter out of 75 million computers in total (from Gartner and IDC). That puts the Mac sales share at under 4%.

Let's go over that again: Less than 4%. Less than 1 in 25 of computer users are interested enough in Macs to buy one. Of course that might be higher if you count consumer sales only but what? 1 in 10? 1 in 8? It's still pretty trivial.

So it's difficult to say if it's a success or not since the numbers are not really statistically significant in comparison to Windows OEM sales. Sure, financially - which is great if you own APPL stock but totally irrelevant otherwise - but by user volume? Nah, not really - it's just a blip on the radar.

Well since the reviews are universally positive (apart from a few dubious characters) and pre-order sales are at record levels I'd say it's going to do very well. I guess that's what having a completely open public Beta does for you.

The point is that you hate Microsoft and it hurts you to think that the overwhelming majority of the computer buying public - of all technical abilities and social backgrounds - don't. Sure, I'm not sure they love it but the accept it as part of their lives because it just works, doesn't give them any real problems and does what they want at the right price.

Apparently that's what the overwhelming majority of people want.

Your comment would be true if the Nokia 5800 wasn't the biggest selling smartphone in the UK, not the iPhone. Don't confuse hype with dominance.

The Sidekick Cloud Disaster 12:33pm on 13 Oct 2009 Rory, although Microsoft must be held accountable for this I would point out that the storage was not at their facility but was subcontracted to Hitachi Data Systems. It was their failure to make a back up (and Microsoft's to check they had) that caused this issue.

The lastest update is that T-Mobile (the carrier operating the Sidekick) also believe they will now be able to restore at leats some of the data. For those for whom it cannot it will offer compensation.

However, let's make no mistake - this is bad and a poor advert for cloud computing whoever offers it. It is sheer incompetence not to back up critical data before attemptign a migration or other change and I can only hope the industry learns from this.

No, no it wasn't. The LG Prada beats it for a start.

This is where the Strand report is useful. It helps dispel the myths, rubbish and hype surrounding a product which has sold about as much as the N95 in the UK (despite Apple's laughable method of counting all three models and iPod touches in their figures).

But hey, let's continue to bump it up. Not that it matters - Joe Public will get bored of it in the same way they did with the RAZR and N95 and move onto something else.
Who wins from an Orange iPhone? 3:47pm on 28 Sep 2009 I see the iPhone article has dropped down the rankings not unlike iPhone sales - a lot of initial interest which quickly dies away.

Bluntly anyone expecting a price war between O2 and Orange over a product which has pretty much reached saturation point is delusional. It may be the case that'll you see better results for the next generation of the iPhone but not this one.

You mean aside from Nokia's first capacitive touch screen phone and a small form factor handset running a full version of Linux?

Yeah OK.

I think you'll find a lot more people are interested in what Nokia do than Apple when it comes down to actual buying decisions.

An evening with Generation Whatever 5:10pm on 02 Sep 2009 I think the girl who suggests that no-one over 25 should be on Facebook is missing the point. The whole point about Facebook is you can restrict who has access to you so it's only a circle of friends and acquaintances who can view your stuff.

I have no interests in the random musings of prepubescents and teenagers and I'm sure they would have no interest in me and my mates going on holiday or arranging a booze up. It's horses for courses.

However, it's interesting that they agree Twitter is a complete waste of time. It might be useful for infomercials and some specialised professions - like journalism - but otherwise it's pointless and the bubble is going to burst on it pretty quickly.

Finally, I appreciate these are nice middle-class kids and fundamentally that's what the bankers will be interested in. Trouble is, nice middle class kids don't always dictate where society goes.

Since the latest round of posts we've had MS Word being banned in the US, reviews of W7, Facebook's acquisition of Friendfeed, Gartner's quarterly smartphone stats published, the Zune HD going on pre-order (which at least you sort of mention) and a host of other things and yet here you are with a rumour.

As Rod the Mod would say "Wake up , Maggie. I think I've got something to say to you."
