Introducing green cuts 5:17pm on 24 Nov 2009 What ever happened to Zack Goldsmith, wasn't he going to lead the tories and Cameron's green credentials. Pity Dear old George Osbourne didn't look more convincing at B&Q having to have low energy bulbs explained to him, after all they have been around for a few years now. Perhaps his plan is to go around the Whitehall changing out light bulbs, maybe at last he has a cunning plan!

When politics matters... 5:51pm on 09 Nov 2009 When did we start to believe politics was all about small issues? The level of debate these days both in the press and other public domains is so purile that it just tends towards looking for reasons for personal insults. I have a letter from Winston Churchill to a member of my family where not only was it typed but the signature is also a facsimile, we never took that as a slight or insult or went to the press. I'm afraid I give up especially when it comes to the Sun standing up for anybody

Mr Cameron likes to play the avenging angel over everybody else whilst keeping quiet on his £20K a year mortgage interest for his second home. It seems that Legg has been more than generous to those investing in property at the expense of the taxpayer.
Cameron's very personal plea 4:15pm on 09 Oct 2009 Every time I turn on the TV I hear somebody calling for the government to do this, that or why don't they bailout something or the other. This makes me believe that the british people don't really want small government and that in some ways they do want a nanny state. That is of course until they realise that it costs money.

Tony Blair fought his last election on improving public services and by god I'm glad he did, as the NHS has been perfect in sorting out my triple bypass quickly. I just hope the electorate think long and hard about the choice there is to be made.
We can go to the Thatcher model of pass everything out to quangoes (yes she did believe in them) and remove government from responsibility, pass it all out to local government and create post code lotteries. Or look at the centralised model for funding and running our public services.

I have no doubt that David Cameron will prefer the former case because although he proudly boasts of his use of the NHS and state schools you can bet this will not last long once he gains power, his need to try to look like the common man will diminish, after all wealth does give you more choices. Like it or not it is impossible for the whole population to achieve enough wealth to have the choice and therefore they become a disenfranchised underclass.

The next election is not about who can run Great Britain better, but who can run it in the best way for the majority of the people. As somebody who was able to retire at 57 having never had a day out of work, made my own money to retire on by avoiding letting the private pension thieves get their hands on it, I am happy to carry on paying my Taxes to enable those not so fortunate as me to share the benefits of our national wealth.
Conferences: Not what they used to be 2:10pm on 08 Oct 2009 #8 has hit the nail on the head, politics today runs at the same level as business and the so called real world, only looking to make "motherhood and applepie" statements about anything and everything. It seems that anybody who thinks they are anybody just wants to hug the limelight telling people what they think they want to hear. A few years ago televoting shows were lauded as having more relevance than politics, as these are now tending to wane hopefully we can get back to political debate/arguament to make people understand the choices. Lets not blame the politicians for being boring, rather we should blame ourselves for not being prepared to debate with them and letting the media take over from us with petty whitchhunts and general rubbish.

Another gaffe 10:49am on 08 Oct 2009 Nevermind Nick, a week or so ago it was only Gordon Brown who was ever reported as making gaffes, at least we can now see that the trait is widespread. I've just had a thought, if David Cameron is prepared to make Dannett a lord to get his advice on failure in Afganistan, why not also give Fred Goodwin a peerage to advise on failure in banking, Sharon Shoesmith on failure in social services and of course Boris Johnson as minister without portfolio on overall failure. We then could at least have a government fully committed to hindsight! I'm sure the SUN could start an unholy alliance campaign around this.
General gimmick? 3:45pm on 07 Oct 2009 I at least expected Dannett to be given a Tory seat, but on the face of it as another Toff perhaps he will be more comfortable with a peerage. The first question that springs to mind is that if all decisions are taken by the MOD why do we continue to keep this top brass? maybe its time to get rid as they don't seem to add much value or even manage the military budgets effectively. After all remembering back to General Haig in the first world war where the quote was "Lions being lead by donkeys" has anything changed?
