Nobel prize for dissident? 10:01pm on 25 Sep 2008 The real embarrassment of the country is those people in power who try to keep the criticism down, and to deliberately ignore the law.

I hope the news of Hu being considered as a candidate can make more Chinese people start to think and to ask questions.

I hope Hu can win the prize. and the winning will win Hu a speedy regaining of freedom.
Pandas - a gift from China to Taiwan? 12:48pm on 16 Sep 2008 Tuan Yuan also reminds me of the chubby shapes of pandas.

I agree that there is political implication of the name. There is also the implication of the good-will from common people who want some symbolic meaning of reunion ... The meaning of the name has many layers, like many things, e.g. China has many characteristics and faces. The world is not black and white. We need to live with it. But I guess depends on who you are, you may choose to focus one meaning over the other.

So what if the majority of people in Taiwan do not want to be part of China? Should it be the business for the Taiwanese to decide not the mainland Chinese?
Opening ceremony cool - for some 4:24pm on 09 Aug 2008 In my opinion, today's blog seems the lightest one so far, perhaps because all the build-up, all the tension, and all the controversial around the Beijing Games have passed its peak. Now, it's time for some serious sports.

But the tensions are still there as can be seen from the comments of today's piece. There is a Chinese saying "Zhong Kou Nan Tiao",, which is certainly true for the news reports and blogs. But news and blogs are not put out to satisfy everyone. Having diverse opinions are a good thing. Keep on discussing, criticizing, commenting... but once a while, try other people's shoes for a change.

It’s not a bad thing that the CCP, Beijing, China, Chinese people are getting so much scrutiny because of the Games, even though I do think there are more negative articles than the positive ones. All these media attention reminds me that there are lots of things the CCP needs to improve. As a responsible person we need to take these criticisms (no matter it’s constructive or condesending …) seriously, and in our own way make the place we live in a better one. The first step perhaps is to not shut your ears followed by shouting. When you accept something, ask why , and when you reject something, also ask why. Before you accept or reject something, can you find other angles to look at the issue, and why.

The propaganda department of Badaling Special Zone Administrative Center do need to sharpen their PR skills better. Even though there are normally two versions of a press release for a successful or a failure/ or unexpected result, respectively, can’t they wait till the event is over to distribute them?

Proganada or Publicity, it depends on your view point and/or starting point of your view point, again.
Freedom in China 9:52pm on 04 Aug 2008 I am shocked by so many angry comments from some of my Chinese counterparts. I was wondering if you guys actually read today’s blog.

May I suggest that
1. Can you please calm down and reason, instead of jumping on the fence and shouting?
2. Can you not claim that you are representing the rest of the (1.3 billion -1) Chinese?
3. Can you not mistake your own interpretations of the blog or other people’s comments to what they really are?

Freedom in China 12:12pm on 04 Aug 2008 James, I think your blog today really points out one of the basic things behind many contentious issues around China, particularly freedom. Well done!

I often feel that the main stream media of the west often pick the starting point of what China should be, perhaps it’s easier to write from a pessimistic point of view (e.g. China’s dash for freedom), and perhaps it is easier to get published and more likely to spur discussions.

I want to say that perhaps there are more than just two competing choices (the well-established western democracy vs. the old iron-hand authoritarian way) in front of Chinese people on its long march to have a more civilized future. It’s unfortunate or fortunately or just a plan reality that they are still struglling.

I think Chinese people are always read to learn, but they probably don’t always like being taught (by Chinese government/media or by Western governments/media).
Olympic predictions 12:14pm on 01 Aug 2008 I want to add that those "Officials from the State General Administration of Sport " who made the comments you described in your blog about Liu Xiang are really obnoxious. They are among the people who are ruining the Olympic games also. But again the success of the game is not defined by these kind of people.
Olympic predictions 12:07pm on 01 Aug 2008 The success of the Beijing Olympic Games is defined beyond the four criteria you came up with. Among these four, I think the prediction on the air quality is the most valid one. There is a Chinese saying “????,?????” In terms of “people or ?” part, I think the current measures to cut down the air pollution in Beijing for the games have been exhausting. In terms of air pollution, the “nature or ?” part has a lot to do with the success, the meteorological condition whether it will facilitate disperse the pollution or being stagnant and trap the pollution. Maybe one can manipulate with clouds, but the technology is far from mature.

It would be a piece of good headline news if some athletes decide to shout “shame on you …” like what Michael More did during his Oscar acceptance speech. But I’d say by doing so, he or she or they just ruin the moment for him/her/them self/ves as well as Chinese and people around the world who dare to want to have a moment of peace.
In my opinion, the Olympics are not a competition for which country has the most dirty laundries.

Winning is a good thing. Nothing wrong with people wanting to have the most gold medals. But it seems wrong that “Communist Chinese” want this for some reason, in some people's eyes. That’s perhaps why the officials are downplaying the wish.
Unblocking websites 11:57pm on 31 Jul 2008 Some other things are also unblocked. For example, some newspaper stands started to sell New York Times, Wall Street Journal...
But they are a bit pricey (more than 25 yuan). And it seems that New York Times is for reading there or for looking only, and not for sale. So even if you have money you can't get it...

The report call the unblock of these foreign journals a "short vacation".

Among other things, there are also reports on local people's reactions to the designated parks for protesters.

Olympic arrivals 4:14pm on 28 Jul 2008 “It's designed to take their breath away. But this city's air probably did that instead.”, that makes me laugh.

“it might be easier - and quicker - to brand your forehead with your name, date of birth, passport number and DNA sequence”, a simple bar code on a wrist/necklace band like those for groceries or a magnetic card should do the job, it seems.

“pray for wind or rain”, I heard the cloud seeding team has been practicing for the Games. Perhaps, there will be a man-induced shower to washout the pollutants from the air every night during the games?

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Perhaps a 90% traffic ban should be reinforced to further cut down the air pollution.

Hopefully, the concerns over the air pollution and many measures to curb the pollution will continue during non-desperate times, e.g. even after the game, in Beijing and else where in China.
