The rise of the English South Africans 8:33pm on 05 Nov 2009 @20 - I watch quite a bit of it actually. Just because other nations and other sports do it doesn't make it (the NZ rugby team has long been a joke on this point - they poach the south seas nice and early) and just because other countries do doesn't mean England has to - any part of that you don't understand?!

What we are talking abut here is people's perception of international sport - does it reflect nationality, the sport in that country or just whoever fulfils some sort of residency or great grandmother criteria? I think national teams should include people who have at the least been largely brought up in that country.

Are you saying that if England fielded 11 Saffers all born and brought up over there, who had only fulfilled the minimum residency criteria you would be happy with that? If so fair play - I just disagree. I know that such a team beating Aus wouldn't mean anything to me then.

Oliver - would you be happy with that scenario? BTW the professions thing was just dumb - no analogy at all!

I will support Trott and Pietersen wholeheartedly once we're in a match but it is ultimately the England (and Wales) cricket team and I think it undermines the nature of international sport to have South Africans, Australians or Irishmen who grew up outside England in the side. For those who came over as children it is entirely different.

Trott is not English and should not be selected. The parallel with Almounia is pretty much exact. Otherwise call it the County Select XI or soemthing.

The ECB need to get rid of some of the vastly overpaid adminstrators, streamline the county set up, get cricket on terrestial tv, reduce players' pay and plough money into getting kids playing. Unofrtunately the game is run by money men who have no long term vision.

It's a shame, it's a great game and people are missing out by not getting the opportunity to play.

This was because a minority of people in the sector had behaved unethically and the only way to try and restore the reputation of the profession was to put up with it. Hearing the MPs squeal shows how little they know about the real world.
'This is no big deal' 1:34pm on 05 Jun 2009 Does anyone know how to get through to the BBC that their figures for the Council elections are wrong? Several show no councillors e.g Devon/Hampshire elected for any party and the Lab and Tory gains/losses have not changed since it was just 2 Councils that had declared. I don't know how they can put such inaccurate info on the front page.
'This is no big deal' 12:52pm on 05 Jun 2009 I think you're losing sight of why this re-shuffle is happening now. It looks from a quick scan of local govt websites that Labour's share of the vote is going to be shocking, possibly in the mid teens. If GB had waited for the reults he would have been toast but by diverting attention away from the results and buying himself 48 hours he might just survive. Just imagine what the BBC front page would look like of no re-shuffle today. It's classic Mandelson tactics and I'm amazed none of the journalists refer to it.

It is a term that has come to mean forcing a politician out of office. I thought quite widely used but evidently not!

Dear oh dear. Apart from the appalling lack of respect for the other allied dead that this implies it also shows a shocking ignorance of the facts. I suppose no American criticises Russia as they could be said to have saved America in WW2? This is just as facile a comment. Of course there is huge gratitude but don't talk as if Britain (or some other parts of Europe) rolled over. I suggest you read a history book or two and escape the coccoon of banal American nationalism.

Even if your point was correct does that disbar anyone from criticising USA ad infinitum? Or is free speech more important?

People are just giving opinions on sport - it's really not that important. If you find it difficult to deal with I'd keep your comments to yourself and seek a self esteem building course.
Hugely respected, much admired... but loved? 12:39pm on 13 Jan 2009 Hayden failed against quality bowling at the beginning of his Test career, came back and prospered when these bowlers had by and large gone, failed again against pace and movement in 2005, and again in 2008.

Hayden never made a test hundred against a top quality attack on a difficult track when the result was in doubt. His figures are a testament to the decline in fast bowling over the last 15 years. That together with an increase in batting friendly pitches, smaller boundaries and limitations on short pitched bowling enabled him to adopt a percentage approach to being aggressive. He was also a great competitor and very single minded.

Don't get me wrong, Hayden had a freakish eye and tremendous power, but his technique was brutally exposed every time he came up against the best. That's why I never took to him - his bombast was the talk of a bully knowing there was no one to stand up to him.
