As a labour party member I have seen positive discrimination in action at a city council level and it is somewhat comic.

In our recent candidate selection, the quite blatant decision was made once nominations were closed to name the top X winnable seats as such and then to enforce these as all women shortlists where X just happened to equate to the number of potential female candidates. It was made quite clear by the officers if there had been more female candidates there would have been more all women shortlists.

This state of affairs doesnt benefit the women in that they dont have to defend the platform upon which they are standing and it deprives the party of the talent of its men who can then only stand in seats where they have little chance of winning.

What about all the woman whose clothing buying, here today gone tomorrow antics have driven the consumer credit bubble ? Are they and their store cards, credit cards, remortgaging antics not even partly responsible ?

It is not suprising that BBC journalists get arrested. The output of the BBC is so biased against the legitimately elected government of Iran.

The BBC needs to learn some basics of journalism. It is not the case for instance that the young vocal, web savvy residents of Tehran can be equated as being representative of the political aspirations of the country as a whole.

At some point this meister of spin and the soundbite is going to have to come clean on his own policy platform.

If we are to take the conservatives seriously as a potential government then they need grown up policies on the environment, defence, national security, the NHS and so on and so forth, properly costed so that *we* the electorate can make a meaningful decision as to the future course of this *our* nation.

In the meantime he can feel free to stand on as many boxes as he likes, pissing in the wind about Brown and the cult of personality that so fascinates the political elite and you media parisites who suckle on the fat whore that is the political establishment.

On issues of substance, I note in a time of crippling financial endebtness the tory party under "The peoples Dave" have committed to a huge tax break for the financally secure in the form of inheritance tax cuts ( How I wonder are these to be afforded ?). Conversely on spending they have stuck the boot into MoD spending with respect to helicopters but those with an actual attention span will note that they have made no commitment whatsoever to fund additional helicopters should they be elected and indeed the implication of their spending plans is an overall reduction in expenditure on our troops of some 10%

If were a service man I would think long and hard before throwing my support behind such a spending proposal...

How can you speak of political or intellectual integrity when you bleat about a referendum on Lisbon, a treaty that would have reduced the polical deficit when what you clearly want is a referendum on leaving the EU ?

Come on man grow some balls and admit what your agenda really is.

I actually feel sorry for the british electorate, if you like me chatted to the great unwashed as to what their voting intentions were there were three schools of opinion

1. I am going to vote UKIP/BNP/Green as a protest vote
2. I am not going to bother voting that will show the corrupt politicians
3. I am going to vote Conservative/LibDem to give Brown and his corrupt cronies a kicking

The pity is that only tactic three has been picked up by the media and the other two aspects of the voters strategy has been ignored as it doesnt fit in with the picture the media have decided needs painting.

I suspect as the Euro results unfold they will be forced to acknowledge 1. as the BNP picks up its first MEPs (to our nations shame)

The large number of people who adopted strategy 2. will continue to be unheard I fear and that just goes to show positive apathy is not an effective way to register a protest.

I agree NATO was relevant in keeping the militaty forces of the warsaw pact at bay. The EC/EU has been instrumental and promoting the resolution of issues within western europe by peaceful means for the last 50 years. It has also proved a stablising force keeping communists out of power in Italy/Spain and to some extent France when there was a real danger they could have fallen.

It is not the EU that has centralised power but rather the national governments. If the EU parliament was given real balls and power to formulate and enact legislation then the peoples of Europe could hold the EU executive to account via the ballot box.

The Council of Ministers is the problem, not the EU parliament and not the EU bureaucracy.

The simple truth of all this is that the tories have scored 38% of 35% of the electorate at a time when the Labour party is buffeted by the deepest recession in living memory and an unprecedented expenses scandal.

The Labour party doesnt need a new leader to pander to the political circus that is the 24hr news cycle and the westminster set.

It needs the right policies on the economy, health and education and for a large part in can define those under a Brown premiership.

I predict in 12 months time provided the spoilt brats on the backbenches hold their nerve the political scene will look much different and we will coem to understand why the opposition parties are calling so shrilly for an election now.

Surely the real question facing Britain as it has for decades now is do we wholeheartedly embrace the institution that has held communism and facism at bay for 50 years or not ?

This is flavoured this time by the question as to whether or not we shame our grandparents legacy by embracing the far-right int the form of English Democrats, UKIP, BNP etc or not.

The question of whether the result embarrasses Brown or not is somewhat trivial froth within the polictical entertainment circus that passes for political debate in this country these days.

Except they have lost their jobs have they ? They are still able to draw their salary and expenses as an MP along with their more than generous pension scheme.

I dont want them to pay back the money they stole from me, say sorry and resign from their ego trip as PPS to someone important or minister for funny walks.

I want them out of office, their behaviour is morally bankrupt and they have no moral right to lead our political elite. Take a walk gents, go out and apply your bankrupt morality in another sphere of endeavour you are not wanted here no more.

What we want are hard working MPs who serve their constituents honestly and well with the strength of character to only claim for what they absolutely have too.
