How the World Cup's final flourish silenced its critics 11:50am on 24 Nov 2008 I don't think people should fool themselves that one great match makes a great tournament.
In some ways, the reaction to the final result mirrors the weaknesses of league as an international sport. The fact that it can be considered one of the upsets of all time when the second best team beats the best team clearly shows the limitations of the tournament.
And the fans would seem to agree - gaping banks of empty seats at nearly every game (some in relatively small stadia) indicates the world cup failed to capture the imagination.
Don't get me wrong, I like rugby league, but it is - and always will be - a club sport. It should concentrate on improving what it already does well, rather than trying to morph into something it never will be.
Goodnight Beijing 11:31am on 25 Aug 2008 Everyone seems to think the BBC coverage was just the stuff on the telly. Radio 5 was exceptional as ever (with the noteworthy exception of Mr Smug Nicky Campbell, who never ceases to irritate), as was the online coverage. The addition of the live online content would have brilliant if only my work computer could handle that sort of workload.
Taekwondo needs to move with the times 3:26pm on 24 Aug 2008 I found the whole competition pretty unsavoury. I didn't like the way the fighters claimed points every time their foot went near the opposition.

I did taekwondo for about three years and fought in compeition, but I think the wheels are coming off the discipline as a competitive sport. Most fights were sterile affairs and many of the scoring shots were little more than slaps. Something needs to be done to increase the incentive of landing head kicks. Most taekwondo bouts seem to consist of a risk free approach, with the aim to land one quick kick and then get out of harm's way. This not only creates an unsatisfactory viewing spectacle, but is also completely opposed to showing "indomitable spirit" which is supposed to be the founding spirit of the art.

I fear it is over as an Olympic sport.
Final humiliation in the park 11:53am on 18 Aug 2008 I, for one, am applauding Mr Ma. If for no other reason than it should wipe the smug grin off Mr Fordyce's face next time he suggests we have a game.

I seem to remember the challenge going along the lines of: "We should have a game some time...... I used to play a bit of ping pong."

Drug testing still not on level playing field 5:56pm on 13 May 2008 What do you think of the suggestion last week that drug cheating could be made a criminal offence?
Obviously, a country unwilling to implement WADA rules is unlikely to follow that course. But it might make athletes think twice if there was a prospect of a criminal prosecution if they were caught during a competition.
Do you think this is something the IOC would even countenance?

Vaughan under pressure for successful series bid 09:40am on 12 May 2008 If Vaughany can't make runs at home against New Zealand's pop gun attack perhaps he needs to start worrying.
Having said that, with the likelihood of a comfortable 3-0 win in the offing, he is unlikely to be under massive pressure by the time the Proteas come a-calling. Playing Steyn and Morkel might be a bit more of a challenge.
