Three years in China 7:59pm on 08 Jul 2009 The 'free' of the so-called 'free press' also means you can pick and choose what you want, ignore what you don't want, to report, and how you want to report them, based on my 3 decades observation living in the west.

Talking about 'living in the west', one comment above seems to say if you choose to live in the west, you cannot disagree with James Reynolds. That's silly at best. I don't know how to describe it precisely without this comment being removed by the 'moderator'.

I would say you might not did it consciously due to your lack of Chinese language capability, and knowledge of the history and culture. But , if 'bashing the Chinese government' is your purpose or one of your purposes, you certainly have done a good job.

China is not a 'power', let alone a 'super power'. Not even close to Japan.
It is a 'developing' country (It used to be more powerful and advanced than others, by the way). Expecting China to be the same as other developed countries today is obviously not realistic. I don't disagree at all it needs to improve in many, many areas, especially 'rule of law'. Nevertheless, you know what 'developing' means. It's in the process, and you don't get there overnight. And, Chinese people know all the shortcoming of their country, they are smarter than you think they are. The world is changing. China is changing fast. I hope you have learned something in the three years in China. Sorry, if you have not.

Disagree.

That's why we have 'moderator' to remove comments if they 'violate the house rules'. Every country has their own 'house rules'.
Also, uncensored pornographic stuff only encourage teen pregnancies, not 'critical analysis skills'.

Whatever the foreign journalists were dancing in the neighboring country and in Iran recently, there seemed to be no umbrella involved. At least, I don't see it. Anybody got the video?
As if 1989 never happened 11:17pm on 06 Jun 2009 Make no mistake about it, the majority of the students were good kids. There were of cause a few bad elements mixed in there, which is normal, but most of them no doubt were patriotic. Their motive shouldn't be discredited.
The problem was the foreign media were way too 'excited'. That might have led the crowd into thinking they were about to break the will of the government. They, knowing the foreign media were on their side, got bolder and bolder everyday (I remember seeing at least one boy in his pajamas meeting with the government leaders), and stubbornly refused to back down unless they got what they wanted.
Imagine if the government caved in and met their demands, whatever they were, there would have 'demonstrations' everywhere in the country everyday, demanding all sorts of things, and the whole nation would have been in complete chaos, if not disintegrated into pieces. And the foreign powers certainly would have sent in the occupying troops (using the pretext of protecting their own citizens ... sound familiar?). China would have been set back 100, 200 years, and very likely just vanished from this earth altogether.
I hope China, the government and the people, will keep improving things on all aspects (especially corruptions and rule of law), and stupidity like this would never happen again.
As if 1989 never happened 4:14pm on 03 Jun 2009 It was 20 years ago. James Reynolds might still be in the kindergarten or grade school. I watched the event through American TV, and I swear I did not see any scene of 'massacre', nor did I see 'hundreds of thousands' killed. I did see some young people got hurt and were put on three wheel carts, evidently being rushed to the hospitals. I also saw mob climbed up to a tank and set it on fire. Don't remember if the soldiers in the tank got killed or not.

There were many many foreign media, equipped with advanced communication gears, working so hard trying to take the advantage of the situation. They thought they got the best opportunity to defeat China using Chinese. They all seem worried the event wouldn't be big enough to topple the government... That is the core problem. The naive students saw the foreign media and believed they got help and refused to back down.

Because of the fanning flame by foreigners, I don't think the government made a mistake by sending in the troops. Riot police with water cannons simply wouldn't have done it.

I agree wholeheartedly China needs to gradually improve itself on governing by 'rule of law', reducing corruption, etc. But, is that the right way to achieve it?

China is no exception. China has no monopoly, either.
Petitions in China 02:03am on 10 Apr 2009 Some of the petitioners might be legitimate, calling them all insane is probably not fair. However, in a country of 1.3 billion, if people feeling they are mistreated all come out to get justice this way, imagine what kind of society it would look like. You think you can live in a place like that, Mr. Reynolds?

Every country has people petitioning, protesting. UK is no exception. It is in my view for a foreign journalist to get involve in local stuff like this is not appropriate.

Everywhere people can be mistreated, or at least they feel they are mistreated, in some way. Not everyone can get justice in the end. The Iraqi people have their country invaded, their lives shattered, no clean water, no electricity, no basic security, no ... Do you think they all can get 'justice'?

1. Did he use force before he "preaches peace"?
2. Did people have freedom when he was ruling?

You have been there a couple of times now. Did you see that area of China is 'hell on earth'? Tell the truth to the world, Mr. Reynolds. Don't just repeat a separatist's words without thinking. You are not his mouthpiece, are you?

A lot of time, you seem to be his propaganda machine. The questions posed by you/BBC are very obviously 'encouraging' the monk to vilify the government.

"Who is controlling you?"
"The government."

This is so dramatized, so idiotic, so laughable.
