This commentary has to be the remark of one alien to even the most basic education. It is as clumsy as it is ridiculous! I have laughed my socks off at this puerile nonsense. Let's make a start shall we on putting some of this medieval drivel to bed?

1. "the idea that you are born gay is madness in the extreme." By definition, every academic engaged in continued study of biology, genetics, toxicology, medicine, the psychiatric disciplines, philosophy et al, must be in some deluded in the extreme, and requiring of interventionist mental health care. Psychiatric wards the world over will be filled to the gunnels with those who have sought to map the human genome, or understand the basis of genetics and physiology. Their empirical research models and methodology have no basis in fact. They are without worth clearly because "hilljim" says so. They must be immediately incarcerated in a secure mental health facility.

2. "Imprisoned with the gay gene." I hadn't realised the gay gene was some sort of punishment! Is it of the sort meted out by some vengeful god? Was this imperfection part of our so called intelligent design, and if so, wasn't it therefore a rather rubbish design mistake to make? Also, I imagine you have never quite gotten round to asking the gay people of the world just how they themselves feel about their "imprisonment." I'd wager they'd have rather a lot more to say about how content they are in life, free from the insults and assaults of their thoughtless and bigoted countrymen. Psychotherapy could be in order mind you HillJim, as empathising with the lot of your fellow human has a big part to play in being genuine with and accepting of yourself.

3."Paedophiles." Hmm, a rather tenuos link you've made there HillJim. Paedophilia is overwhelmingly committed by those of the heterosexual persuasion, and being a psychiatric disorder, I'd suggest you familiarise yourself with such, and so invest in some rudimentary literature on the topic of abnormal psychology. You'll find it most illuminating and might even, like many of your fellows on this particular thread might, find you learn something about yourself and why attacking those different than you makes you feel better inside.

That'd be a resounding yes. They've been out of touch for centuries, and their archaic male dominated culture is authority driven to preserve the power base of the few.
Anyone with an ounce of education is aware that sexual orientation is decided in the womb; therefore by definition, those whom are gay are imperfect beings created by an imperfect being. Religion has ever been built upon a rock of fear and prejudice; nice to see that even here in bonnie Scotland we continue to utter small words from our small minds to attack those we haven't had the decency to attempt to understand.
Religion has the smell of blood about it, and no amount of posturing by the tweed twin-set wearing brigade will likely be enough to prevent its eventual demise.

We are in agreement Scamp. Mr Gray has all the personality of a bread van, and I quite imagine he couldn't pull the skin from a custard either.

Quite possibly the most boring politician in Scotland. He can conjur quite the nuclear-winter of boredom can't he? I suspect he models his tonality on some theta-band sound designed to induce part of the human sleep cycle. His commentary appeals purely to partisan party loyalists also; there is absolutely nothing here for the swaying lay voter. Hyper critical of incumbent government policy, and yet spectacularly vacuous in its failure to provide some meaningful alternative. Still, I imagine if you're the everyday unthinking voter from the side streets of a large Scottish city, then this sort of meaningless drivel will persuade you in much the same way as lemmings driving off a cliff might persuade you to join them on a motoring holiday.

I wouldn't as a matter of course, choose to indulge in internet ping pong with a colleague, but I must address the points you have made regarding the intentions of medics.

Your assertion above that the dignity of the patient is in someway irrelevant to the medical profession is as offensive as it is clumsy. It is certainly a monument to professional stupidity. I would suggest you present your commentary to the local CHCP project or perhaps the university faculty of the GRI (only a hop, skip n' a jump from you in Royston), and see just what sort of response you illicit. I imagine a complaint against you would ensue.

On what evidential base are your assertions made that your medical colleagues have little regard for the wishes of the dying? Was this a blind survery you'd conducted on behalf of GCC Social Work Dept, or has some academic literature detailing this miracle claim escaped my eye in recent times? I was desperately unaware that the medical profession was deemed to hold such a cold and uncaring attitude to the sick and dying. Our instincts to protect, nurture, heal, encourage and love must surely, according to you, all be drilled out of us by the various university faculties within the purview of the Scottish NHS. Certainly in my time within the NHS I have never encountered any doctor, nurse, physio or counsellor who ever held such a dismissive and disgusting view of the patients in our care. Such views would never be aired or tolerated during a multi disciplinary team meeting or ward shift duty handover by nurses or doctors, and I am frankly appalled that you have suggested to the public in general this behaviour is somehow common practice for your medically trained colleagues.

I am very well versed in medico socio and psycho social policy and I would never suggest that the ethics of a profession should be questioned as a point scoring tool on a public debate. Misinforming the public regarding the purported intentions of your colleagues is a disgracefully unprofessional act in itself. You should hang your head in shame. As a social care worker, you should be more aware than most of the consequences of your words, given their intellectually diminished content.
Medical dilemma of suicide law 9:36pm on 08 Dec 2008 Given my rare political commentaries, I must say this is a topic which fills me with personal dread, but a topic on which I feel so completely compelled to comment.

I have in my time been in the employ of the NHS, and my time spent there was occasionally filled not only by much humour and hard work, but also by holding the hand of the dying, or hearing the final words of those whose time on this plane was fading. Staying by the side of the dying holds many memories for me; that of great priviledge (of being there to offer comfort) , of distress, of heartbreaking sadness, of joy even. There are so many ways in which I've witnessed my fellow humans die. Nothing however, can ever describe the frustration I have felt to hear the words of another asking that I somehow, in some way, in any way, just help their pain to end. It is the most heartbreaking request that one human could ever make of another, and something which I do not miss.

When one's instinct, one's education, indeed ones skill is to prolong the life of another, then it would seem a treachery to subscribe to the notion of a preferred death. It was ever a horror however, for me to witness the throes of those who were, in particular, consciously aware of their great suffering, and for whom nothing medically more could be done to ease their distress. This considered, I would never allow my animals to suffer such ill, and subsequently, I could no longer watch a human die in agony either. No longer therefore, could I ever remain in the medical profession.

I have heard countless arguments in support of, and railing against preferred death options. The cruellest repudiation must be that the vengeance of some perceived creator will prove greater than the pain which one suffers in life. It offers little comfort to the weak and pained. How convenient for those who can hide behind a mask of righteousness.

I have a friend of many years medical expertise who lies dying, very slowly, as I write, in a UK hospital. Fully aware of his condition, his mind remains keen whilst his body fails. His suffering is to put it mildy, umimaginable. His request that I somehow help him was delivered with a wry smile, and a knowing nod that my reply would contain the refusal that it did. My own morals dictate that I could not harm a friend and teacher, and my heart pains that I am such a coward in the face of the criticism of others, especially those critics for whom I have nothing but contempt for their oft religiously inspired ignorance.

Margo is to be commended. I can't begin to imagine her courage and determination. She's a special person for daring to bring this topic to the fore. Her considered choice and the research associated with this choice is surely worthy of admiration. I'm not even sure that my own experiences as mentioned, will help anyone decide if life is worth limiting or extending. Watching another die in needless pain is a harrowing and hideous thing to behold. It remains a trauma for the audience for years to come. To endorse this as a moral code, seems to me somehow narcissistic. I wish Margo well in her endeavour.

As a footnote, might I say to those who may at this time have to live with the slowly dying, that though they may seem unaffected, those doctors and nurses right there beside you are hurting too. Behind the calm facade, there's often a well of tears just waiting to burst once you've left. It's important people know that. It's important for you to know that they care.
Glenrothes by-election 09:01am on 07 Nov 2008 What a pathetic and depressingly negative campaign. Yet another oppportunity lost for inspirational debate , though I strongly suspect some of the candidates were spectacularly lacking in the charisma and nous required for engaging banter =(

The Labour and SNP candidates had all the personality of a bread van, and their lack of warmth was matched only by their tediously ridiculous focus upon single issue campaigning, namely home care costs. Bit of a no-brainer for the Labour Party, even though most of their argument was complete rubbish. The SNP response to that? Erm.... Duh! Their man almost deserved to lose for being so forgettably ineffective.

That said fear of home care costs was voiced by so many in the supposedly non partisan media coverage, and subsequently acted upon without due consideration of fact by voters, is testament to the gullibility of some Scots. Shame on us all for our lack of awareness in this 21st century! More of the same appears to be the default choice of so many of us, and I am singularly depressed by this prospect.

I suspect those who fit the "more seasoned" age demographic have a lot to answer for in this respect. Voice your horror though you may, the assertion of many that "I've voted for (a party) and always will" isn't really good enough these days. It is a thoughtless monument to political illteracy. It's a lazy and inconsiderate commentary, deserving of the profoundest contemp. Times change and so do politicians. Voting intentions and political knowledge should remain fluid to change with changing times. Stagnancy such as that crafted by those time-served voting automatons in Fife is a recipe for future apathy.

Their freedom of choice is ever to be respected, but there's such a frustrating lnumber of unthinking voters who seem willing to subject the rest of us to management by political mediocrity. I'd argue that the right to vote brings with it the right of responsibility, and that is something too often cast aside in political debate.

This is a new low! The poster who champions the restriction of access to the UK, based upon his argument that a larger group of people will always try to dominate smaller groups, thus creating civil strife, signally fails to acknowledge the application in principle of the same rules with the current socio-political structure of the UK!

Very much a slippery slope of an argument. Though it is at least putting a smile on my face so late this Sunday evening.

This is somewhat fallacious of you studownie! Your conclusion most certainly does not follow your premise.

Blair is not responsible for the centuries of cross border squabbling between Scotland and England, in much the same way that nationalism on both sides of the border was thriving long before the mention of unions, empires, or even the much lauded north sea oil. Mr Blair's political manouvering may have inadvertently accelerated a possbile fragmentation of the state we currently know as the UK, but I'd argue that it is anything but a legacy.

Another startlingly weak analogy. This argument is so superficial, minimal and irrelevant to the issues at hand, that it signally fails to even be amusing at the basest of levels. You're drawing conclusions about your reason (B) because of some tenuous similarity in your mind to reason (A).It's a very inappropriate argument.
Piffle and tosh 12:40pm on 07 Oct 2008 Piffle and Tosh are surely to be expected Brian! These are after all, our elected representatives.. Normal conversational ability seems to have eluded them, along with truth, forthrightness, fortitude and wisdom.

A lucky few appear yet capable of honourable discourse, but alas for the most part, we'll continue to be subjected to the usual drivel and spin from all corners.

Note to Iain Gray!!! Not all "cyber-bloggers" whom he mentioned in his particularly boring monologue during last week's FMQs are arrant Nats! How dare he presume to prescribe political conviction based upon the limited deductional abilities of his party researchers. Imbecile! Since he's now proven himself both completely dull and witless in a very short space of time, he can however rest assured that he has as much chance of securing my support as a mouldy bowl of porridge has of reaching my gut lining. Calling time 12:02pm on 02 Oct 2008 It's relatively easy to comment away at whatever an opponent might have to say. The greater talent is to offer alternative to what he might have to say. Such talents seem notably lacking in most of our MSP's I regretfully add.

Do we accept the Status Quo and continue as before with things as they are, pretending that problem drinking is not a Scottish cultural norm? Do we instead offer an enlightened alternative that suits all concerned parties? Will our MSP's have both sufficient courage and intellect to address these challenges without resorting to the boring and tedious displays of politico-babbling that we have come to expect in this ridiculous Punch and Judy show?

I fear that the defeat of this measure simply to satisfy the grotesque needs of partisan politicians will neglect the greater need to arrive at an appropriate and workable solution.
