Monday 1 June 2009 5:56pm on 01 Jun 2009 Would you ask her whether she read Rod Liddle's article in the 2 May Spectator that was titled, 'It is child-rearing, not sexism, that explains the pay gap between men and women', and what she thought of it. She will presumably deny having had time to read because...because...but as you have almost certainly read it, or could get a copy to read, you could ask her how it affects her views of the subject of salary-sexism.
What spending would you cut? 09:33am on 26 Apr 2009 As many others have written, I would abolish ID cards; the NHS data base; the renewal of Trident, and SATs for a start. I would reduce the number of so called universities by about a third, using as criterion those that had the highest drop out rate in the first year. I would reduce the number of MPs by about one third on the grounds that we already have more than the US has in Congress and they have six times our population. I would get rid of so called Regional Government (who are where are they? I ask my friends but nobody knows) but first of all with immediate effect I would place all MP additional payments and expenses claims on line the month after they were claimed so we could all keep an eye on things - that would save a packet straight away. Cancer 11:06am on 01 Apr 2009 Having had stomach cancer at the same time as my best friend did, and I lived whilst he died, I get quite queasy.
President Obama: A Newsnight Special 1:02pm on 05 Nov 2008 I've not been a believer in the 'and with one jump he was free' school of problem solving. But nevertheless I am pleased Obama has been elected and the world has high hopes for him. I hope he's up to the job.

Now watch the race to be the first European to get to meet him.
Capital of Culture 8:21pm on 02 Oct 2008 I live just outside Liverpool and I am delighted with all the investment that has taken place here, particularly down town. Compare the investment here with that in Manchester over the last 10 years!

However, all of the cultural events passed me by. None except one appealed to me. That was Lear at the Everyman, with Peter Postelthwaite. And when I went on line, three days after the programme came out and two months before the event, to buy two tickets, guess what? Every seat for every performance was listed as sold. Do you believe that?
What could Gordon do to turn it around? 2:04pm on 25 Jun 2008 Sorry. But the situation has gone to far for it to be redeemed by just one act. So he should start with announcing there is an avalanche of legislation planned so for his second year MPs will, alas, have to sit considerably more than the 140 days they normally do. Then get on with:

1. The West Lothian question;
2. Taxing aviation fuel;
3. Re-instating the 10p tax band;
4. Sacking A. Darling;
5. Sorting out MPs pay once and for all - particularly the expenses
6. Ensuring all MPs who have been overpaid, even if it is 'within the rules' repay it, just as criminals have to do;
7. Cancelling ID cards;
8. Geting a grip of the computerisation of NHS medical records;
9. Ensuring the civil service stop dragging their feet over the freedom of information;
10. Telling H. Blears to listen to what you are planning to do to the planning system and instruct her to stop telling us she is ensuring local communities will have more influence in matters that concern them, and finally
11. Let the six weeks detention fiasco drift into nowhere when the HoL throw it out.
A divisive Davis? 08:06am on 15 Jun 2008 I can remember John Major giving a solem promise to Parliament when data bases began to appear, that on no account would one data base be allowed to link with another. Every data base was to be free standing and to be used only for the purpose it was generated. By allowing data bases to be linked the State would know more about citizens that it should.

And who remembers the original justification for ID cards? To stop benefit - in particular housing - fraud.

DD is right to draw attention to this. And to draw attention to the 42 days attitude. I've never understood why we can't just have holding charges and bring charges later. The police do this all the time. Other countries do also. Why is terrorism here different?
Is the BBC to blame for attacks on Poles? 1:40pm on 04 Jun 2008 Of course not. Hmmm...Mr Kawczynski's name sounds as it might be Polish. Or perhaps he's just got a large number of Polish people in his constituency.

Gordon, the Government and Everything 4:20pm on 02 Jun 2008 I agree with one of your previous correspondents: Brown knows he is going to win so he is leading on this issue and can then claim credit for getting it through which is something his predecessor didn't. If he thought there was any chance of losing, he wouldn't dare to be so supportive of the proposal. Instead he would claim he had been listening to the people - as he told us he would - and determined that there were other ways - as they do in all other western countries - of ensuring that 'terrorists' did not escape punishment.

He probably thinks we don't remember now, and certainly won't remember at the election, that his government doubled it from seven days to 14. Then doubled it again. Then tried to get it to 90 days. Gave up on that and tried 56 days, gave up on that and are now trying for 40 days.

He desperately needs to win on something so let's all feel sorry for him, swallow our feelings and support him.
