But I am too new to this place to know if the debate is getting harsher, more strident, even uglier, or whether this is just the vigorous terms of debate that are normal. ****I'd like to know what you think****. But it is why many see Congress as the last refuge of grown-up debate, and want to keep it that way.

I'd start by reading Ron Paul's excellent "Revolution":

That ought to be a decent primer on the libertarian movement in the US, and the reason why these tea parties are happening. And hence why they are nervous of a growing authoritarian tyranny trampling over people's freedoms.

1. EU membership [saving ~ %4 GDP and > 20billion annually]
2. Reduce Public sector pay by 20% for all highly paid civil servants, 5% for front line workers.
3. Reassess gilt edged public sector final salary pensions, make the pensions funded and comparable to private sector deals (3.5% non-contributory and going toward a personal fund). Unfunded public sector pensions need to be a thing of the past.
4. Constitutional reform. Reduce government. We don't need all of these layers; e.g. local councils, regional government, national government, and central government (Westminster) as well as Brussels.
5. Sack all public sector "non-job" workers (e.g. racial awareness officers). We don't need to employ people in the public sector just to give people something (unproductive) to do - it sucks wealth from the economy.
6. Simplify the tax system and introduce a flat tax, sack the bureaucrats that would then be otherwise twiddling their thumbs.

Hopefully next you'll be telling us you've been listening to the wise words of Peter Shiff, Marc Faber, Jim Rogers and of course Ron Paul.

We'd all be much better off if this lot stopped meddling, let incompetent people/banks go bust, let the competent people take over from a low base... and allow a new age of free market prosperity to continue afresh. That is how capitalism is supposed to work.. the debt fuelled boom was the problem, the recession is the solution ... just let it happen, let the financial sector contract, and let bankers find jobs elsewhere "On yer bike!"

Ok .. so the next question.

Why are we still paying these same people (who you quite rightly infer don't have a clue!) and let them attempt to haul us out of the situation that they allowed to happen?

Why shouldn't we look to the various experts and indeed schools who predicted this mess to help us get out of it?

And why isn't the BBC taking these people seriously?

I'm talking Austrian School, Mises Institute, Peter Schiff, Ron Paul, heck even the new Biophysical school of economics is far superior to the flawed Keynesian claptrap that is *still* being drummed out as a solution.

I'm afraid you are quite wrong Stephanie ... there was a whole school of economics that predicted the scale of the meltdown .. did anybody listen ? No ... Is anyone listening now? No.. The reason why nobody is listening is because the solutions are politically unpalatable consisting of contrasocialist measures (high interest rates and massive cuts in public spending).

The school of economics BTW .. the Austrian School.

I suggest you familiarise youself and read up on the subject, and perhaps visit/interview the good folk at the Mises Institute.

The New Capitalism 10:50pm on 08 Dec 2008 I hope people watched "The Ascent of Money" tonight..

Perhaps we will realise the effects of a bloated and desperate big (and truly global) welfarist system, based on fiat money, coming to the end of existence... inflation, printing of money (or "Fiscal easing")..

The only solutions are to take the medicine, and cut government spending massively..

Lord Mandy calls it "Smart" government, but it is just desperate spin.. and we are doomed to a decade of stagflation as a result.

Why interest rates aren't falling 10:01am on 03 Nov 2008 ... ok so if the market is entirely capable of determining and setting interest rates ...
why do we need a central bank?

All they do is inflate the money supply, and effectively tax the money which already exists in the system.

We might as well have legalised counterfeiting for the banks ... oh right yes, that's what we've got already! Duh, how stupid of me.
New world financial order. What would your plan be? 2:43pm on 24 Oct 2008 1) Listen to congressman Ron Paul.
2) Listen to Austrian School Economists.
3) Consider introducing new competing gold/silver backed currencies.
4) Phase *out* the central banks (Fed, IMF, ECB etc.) and let the *market* set interest rates with a very restricted fractional reserve banking model (Muslim banking is not a bad model !)
5) Allow and positively encourage *local* currencies and barter systems to be created to allow for local economies to become more robust to wider/global economic changes. This is a MUST, think globally, act locally - we must understand that globalisation across *all* markets is a risk (as we have seen), Yes to global trade, but such heavy global interdependence has shown itself to be rather problematic and of great risk to the whole world.

No doubt the NWO plan is for world government, world fiat currency and a microchipped RFID tagged population. We must reject such a plan at *all costs*.
