COP15: (No) Hopenhagen? 10:45pm on 20 Dec 2009 well, all those of us who said the meeting was a meaningless farce and a waste of time have been proved right.

All we have is content-free non-agreement.

And Richard Black is left looking very silly with his dozens of posts anticipating and hyping this non-event, while ignoring the real issue of the leaked emails and dubious dealings of the so-called climate scientists.
COP15: Saving the planet or saving face? 4:30pm on 18 Dec 2009 For once I agree with Richard. Obviously, the politicians have to come away with some kind of piece of paper so they can pretend the jamboree has been a success. But I think it will be a face-saving exercise with no real meaningful substance.

Now to part company with Richard - I am quite happy if this is the outcome.

Please will someone tell these imbeciles that there is no direct link between the Earth's temperature and CO2 emissions?
That the temperature rose at about the same rate 1900-1940 as it did 1970-2000?
That the Earth's temperature has not risen at all in the last ten years?
That NO scientist, not even the IPCC says 'we have to limit emissions to ... to ensure that temperature rise is limited to ...' ?

Another vote for Jo Nova. It seems Richard was afraid to mention her by name in case anyone went to her site and read her excellent sceptic's handbook.
COP15: Titanic nears the harbour 4:44pm on 16 Dec 2009 #6 says it all. It is indeed an 'Alice in Wonderland' conference. When is King Canute going to turn up to help limit future temperature rises to 1.5 degrees? While they're about it, why not agree to limit temperature falls this winter? That would save on grit and salt and reduce accidents.
The insanity and inanity of it all leaves me lost for words so I won't say anything more.

Archibald used the CET data because it is the longest temperature series available. That's not cherry picking. He found the same thing in US sites (Maine, New Hampshire) that have very long temperature records and in De Bilt, Netherlands, again selected for its very long record. The same result was found By Friis-Christensen. It was also confirmed by Butler and Johnston #47 for Armagh.

#25 Perhaps you have forgotten that the BBC is required to be unbiased. Unlike some BBC journalists, Paul Hudson presents both sides of the argument fairly, and if he does have his own opinions, quite rightly keeps them to himself!

Abstract:

Two long mean surface air temperature series are presented for Armagh Observatory; one based on twice daily 'spot' temperature readings, 1796-1882, and the other on daily maximum and minimum temperatures, 1844-1992. Our data confirm the correlation of temperature with solar cycle length, first suggested by Friis-Christensen and Lassen (Science 254, 698, 1991) and, for this site, extend their result a further 65 years, back to the end of the 18th century.

You can find this paper on the web. The Armagh data is useful because it is a rural site and it goes back to the 1790's. It also confirms that there is nothing unusual about current temperatures.
COP15: Climate 'scepticism' and questions about sex 2:50pm on 15 Dec 2009 As Richard says, opinion polls show no difference or only a slight difference between men and women regarding scepticism. Richard asks why more men represent the public face. The answer is quite obvious, but he is so biased that he can't see it.
The reason is that anyone who dares to speak out against the global warming activists is subjected to a barrage of sneering offensive vitriol, that varies from the relatively mild insinuations like in this column (that sceptics must have had some problem in their childhood) to outright hatred and abuse from some other places that I won't mention.
That is why most of us prefer to remain anonymous (I hope I don't need to point out that Samuel Pickwick is not my real name). Any sceptic who 'comes out' needs to be very tough and thick-skinned to deal with it, and men are probably more able to cope with this than women.

Having said that, there are a few brave women skeptics - Jo Nova, Jennifer Marohasy, Lucy Skywalker, Maggie of the Climate Scam, and 'lukewarmer' Lucia liljegren.

I don't even think Richard's claim that there are lots of women in climate science holds up. It is still a small percentage. In the IPCC main report there are ten chapters each with two lead authors. Of these 20 lead authors, only one is female.

One of the interesting things to emerge from the leaked emails was that at least one of the climate scientists admits that they can't account for the recent lack of warming.

Another very interesting article from you. A couple of things to add.

1. That solar cycle 24 prediction you show at the top has about as much validity as the Met Office's barbecue summer! Basically, the experts don't have a clue when it comes to predicting sunspot numbers, and that estimate has been revised downwards quite significantly. Back in Dec 2006 the same 'experts' (Hathaway/NASA) were predicting that cycle 24 would be bigger than cycle 23 and that it would peak in 2010 or 2011. In July 2008 they were still insisting there was nothing unusual happening, and still predicting that the next cycle would be bigger than the previous one. You can follow the changing predictions at the NASA news website.

2. You mention that we could be due for another 'Dalton minimum', but it could be another 'Maunder minimum', or 'Grand minimum', like the one in the 17th century corresponding to a particularly cold period. There is a slightly speculative article in Geophys Res Lett (2008) by Abreu et al "For how long will the current grand maximum of solar activity persist".
COP15 Copenhagen climate summit: Day 4 4:01pm on 10 Dec 2009 Sounds like a recipe for corruption. For third-world dictatorships to cash in on the gullible guilt-ridden developed countries. How would this vast amount of money be distributed among these countries? How would it be monitored to check if it really went to build the presidents new palace as mentioned in #1? The world really is going mad.
