iPhone 'sellout': Deliberate ploy? 09:14am on 08 Jul 2008 It seems to me there's some blame shifting going on.

If the populace demonstrated a little patience, they wouldn't have to get angry about the fact that not everyone can be first in line.

If a mob descends on a website, of course it will run out of capacity. The same would happen if they all tried to get into a shop at once. Lemmings, the lot of them.

What's wrong with NOT being the first to own one? Is the inability to show it off first just too much too bear?

I feel sorry for anyone whose need to pose with the latest gadget causes them to sneer at the vendor because they can't get their hands on it.

I'm keen to have an iPhone, but I'll wait until the experience of obtaining one is not hampered by the mob. Maybe in a week or two. After all, they're not being discontinued as soon as the first batch are sold, we'll all get one if we want one.
Mad About Mac? 09:18am on 11 Jun 2008 When Apple produces a product, it is a tool. To criticise the new iPhone on the basis that it doesn't enable the shooting of rubbish videos and only has a medium resolution camera is to ignore the tool in favour of the toys.

The fact is, with a 3G iPhone I will be able to carry one superbly well put together, slim, lightweight, pocket-sized device that will allow me to communicate and find information effectively in just about any location. Like many other phones, I can store music and pictures on it - but I'll have far a better interface through which to enjoy them.

The availability of third party a VOIP application, seamlessly switching calls (by some magic I can't fathom) from 3G to VOIP to save me money is utterly unique. That Apple has enabled a third party to do this is truly forward thinking.
BT iPlayer Homehub issues 12:06pm on 28 May 2008 BT's current TV advertising campaign has the tag line "Do what you do best".

Exactly what is it that BT do best? Is it the I.T. support they promote in that ad.? Clearly not if they can't even get their own proprietary router to deliver a standard service. Oh dear.

It seems they aren't that good at running a telecommunications infrastructure (it's years behind the quality offered in mainland Europe), they're not good at being an ISP (I note other comments regarding BT's poor showing in ISP league tables), and as for supplying phone service, BT's call rates are invariably the most expensive choice.

Sorry BT, I lost faith in you many years ago.
BT - back to mobile? 07:24am on 10 May 2008 BT seems to want to steal business from other operators in every market, whether it is installing structured cabling in offices, providing I.T. support to Businesses, or inventing new Mobile devices.

Meanwhile, our communications infrastructure, over which BT has for decades enjoyed a virtual monopoly of development and care, languishes in the dark ages compared to mainland Europe, limited to a third of the Broadband speed they enjoy even in rural France.

BT needs to stop interfering in other people's areas of expertise, to get on with the core business - spend time, effort, and money on getting our infrastructure up to date instead of dabbling in new markets that are already well looked after.
Walking away... 09:06am on 04 May 2008 Relief. Microsoft grabbed huge market share for Internet Explorer by simply offering it as the default Windows browser. That's what killed Netscape. We know this.

If MS bought Yahoo they would probably make it the default search page in IE instead of MSN, then build Yahoo based links into loads of applications (i.e. offering Yahoo Mapping of a contact's location by default in Outlook). They would steadily push users into visiting Yahoo "by accident" and then claim users were choosing it over Google.

This method of controlling default setting through the operating system gets around anti-competition laws, and works because so few users bother to change defaults or install alternative software when there's something usable in the OS.
