Jobs for the boys 11:54am on 19 May 2009 Poignant stuff. Reinforces that old chestnut about getting qualified; getting qualified in anything. In the 1980s 'Computing' and 'Information Technology' were the fields to focus on; in the 1990s it was 'Environment' or 'Business'; but essentially being able to put your mind to something practical or even just mentally challenging is a good sign to an employer that they are taking on a worthwhile employee...
The Speaker speaks 11:11am on 19 May 2009 Agree entirely. Methinks there is a lot of "protesting too much" from many quarters. Martin is my MP (though I didn't vote for him) and his transgressions are his own, so he should meet his political demise on his own constituency terms. Something rankles about a Tory tugging us by the elbow and getting us to fight his personal battle for him. It is a convenient distraction from the "moats and manure" stories.
If Carswell or any other Tory had such long-term problems with the Speaker's competence he/they could easily have stood against him in 2005 at a proper election. But they didn't, adhering to the cosy conventions that have hoist them now.
Blank checks out 01:00am on 18 May 2009 Brown's fingerprints are all over this at all stages. We'd be talking about this as a headline right now (lack of economic nous at a time of economic travail), but 'other matters' fix our attention.
Global money-go-round 00:21am on 17 May 2009 Agree wholeheartedly that interconnectedness will be a healthier model for global finance - when it's working. But as we've seen from the toxic asset 'flu virus' bad business can spread like wildfire. Local (but limited) measures can protect the spread of poor practice without shutting down the jetstream of international money.

Raising the standard 01:37am on 11 Apr 2009 Have to agree. Sir Fred is clearly an avaricious man (heaven forbid we use a moral word like 'greedy'), but those who could have controlled him and his ilk ran with the pack. Now they (and 'they' are many) find virtue in pointing and appointing blame. The ladies (and gentlemen) do indeed protest too much...
Jacqui Smith's expenses (again) 12:25pm on 30 Mar 2009 This would not have been as much of a story if the films had only been 'Bambi' and 'Cinderella', but - of course - the 'adult' nature makes the story sizzle a bit more. MPs need to realize that they are not 'away on business' and claiming for the inconvenience of working in London or being forced to stay in a rural farmhouse. This is their job and no-one forced them to do it.
This (and the DBS story) will be off the agenda for now once the G20 rolls into town. But, surely, more to come...?
