I liked your sporting analogy - but its not really 2-2 with 20 minutes left now is it?

It feels more like it is 10-2 and with 20 minutes left. Rather than walking to the car park I expect to see a mad dash to escape the carnage that the next election will bring.

In 1997 - there was a a sense that the John Major government had run out of steam - and the media jumped onto the Labour bandwagon. In 2009/2010 the feeling is that the current government is in the same position.

Perhaps after the next election Labour will rediscover some of its real core values and re-emerge as a left of centre party once again.

If I recall, the (embarrassing) information was leaked to the relevant opposition minister so as the government could be asked questions on those subjects.

The use of the word stealing smacks of someone trying to spin....

However if you do believe in what you wrote, then back in the early 90's Gordon Brown was the recipient of similar embarrassing leaks. Would you say that he stole those - and as such should Gordon Brown have his DNA added to the database?

There is a simple answer to this - it is called travel insurance. When ever I visit another country (either within the EU or not) I always take out travel insurance. Simples....

romeplebian - "institutions" does not mean the Banks, it has a much wider reach than that. It includes pension plans etc. both foreign and domestic that buy our governments gilts. If they think those gilts will be worthless then they will not buy them - and the country is broke.
'A bit of a week' 11:40am on 03 May 2009 I must admit - I do feel very sorry for Gordon Brown. For so long he plotted and schemed to fulfil what he believed was his destiny - to become the PM. As soon as he achieved his aim, karma started kicking him in the teeth, with flooding, plague, and the rock upon which he built his reputation with the British public (the sound economy no more boom and bust) imploding.

I think that there is an opportunity to turn this into a film if we can persuade Liz Hurley to re-don that red dress and have Bedazzled II. Where a Politician has seven wishes to become a successful PM and each time they get thwarted.

So amuse yourselves and think who else could take on Ms Hurleys role perhaps Hazel Blears?

Bringing Brazil to the table 1:28pm on 26 Mar 2009 The momment for a blog on Daniel Hannan's speech has passed - please can we move on. I am sure that these constant calls will have the same result as all the people who demand an election now.

A bit of "that" speech was shown on the Daily Politics show today, which is worth watching as it has Derek Draper from LabourLists being told to shut up by Andrew Marr. Mr Drapers behaviour reminded me of a comment my daughter once made in one of her university philosophy lectures - "The louder I am the righterer I am"

yes I did see the bit about Scotland being 10th, BUT I am cynical to believe that in the lead up to a referendum - the 3rd place ranking would be "bigged" up by those wanting full indpendence. Its human nature to put the best possible spin on things to get the result that you want.

Aye_write - you quote 2005 figures - but they are no longer worth anything - they were from a boom period. What are the 2008 figures - and more importantly what will the 2009 & 2010 look like.

Oldnat - If Scotland became independent, then do you really believe that the English would continue to let the English Tax offices be situated in another country. That is a political minefield. Then there is another minefield of income tax. For example you live in Scotland but you job is in England - or visa versa. Where do you pay income tax? Having worked aborad myself I understood just how many days I could be visiting the UK before I would fall under the UK taxation regualtions.

If Scotalnd does become independent - then I would wish it well, and be very happy for Scotland. If it stayed part of the Union - then again I would be happy for Scotland and the Union. The decision is something that only the Scots can decide for themselves - but the full ramifications of splitting should be carefully worked through.

Be careful what you wish for - you might actually get it. While working abroad I had the pleasure to work with many intelligent people from around the world. To paraphrase a comment from someone who was from an independent - but formally under British rule - country - "When we got our indepenece - we did not want the British to actually leave"

But what happens when North Sea oils runs out? Its a finite resource that cannot last for ever!

Run the numbers on oil revenues beginning to drop in the next 10 years.

My tax office (London 25) is based in Edinburgh. No problems with that, but if Scotland becomes independant - how many civil service jobs would have to move south?

I am English, my wife is Scottish and I have no strong feelings over Scottish indpendence - its up to the Scots to decide, but that descision should be taken based upon the long term view (i.e. over the next 50 years), as jam today does not mean that there will be jam tomorrow.

I enjoy a reasoned debate, with people putting forward arguments and counter-arguments - so here goes...

Your argument is based upon her not being able to stop ONE program being shown, causing her to sell the franchises off to the highest bidder.

I suppose because she recieved a few wrong numbers she decided to sell off BT, powercuts and gas leaks - sell the power companies. Then were the trains, water authorities - what did they do to upset her?

At least she did not decide to tax to dividends paid to pension companies, or was that her fault as well.

Back to ITV. The world has changed massivley wrt entertainment in the last 20 years.

The Internet, cable and satellite providers have lead to advertisers spreading their money around - across these other formats, but their budgets have not increased so as to keep the TV advertising at the same level.
