Is it ever right to wear real fur? 8:05pm on 15 Jan 2009 If we lived as Eskimos, ancient Scots, Scandinavians, or Russians - then clearly fur would be a necessity, albeit still a cruel one.

If we feel the need to lord it over others by wearing the skins of 50 caged Mink, skinned alive, just to show off how many £1,000's we can afford to fritter, frankly, I give up, and I'm glad I am too poor to breathe the same air as such people - and I pity their next life.

As a man sow, so shall he reap - do unto others as you would (will) have them do unto you - for every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action.

These are universal laws, and all the money in the world will not save us from them. Meat is murder - it's bad enough to kill animals to eat, let alone just to pose. Plants don't bleed red blood or scream and writhe when killed - nor do they have eyes, ears, nose, genitalia etc as we do - plants do have consciousness, but it is covered and they are the God-given food for mankind, as stated by Moses in Genesis:

"Lo, I give you the herb bearing seed [grains], and the tree bearing fruit, and this shall be yours for meat [Gk. "brome", Eng. "food"]
"But the flesh [Gk. "kreas", Eng. "meat"] with the blood thereof, and the life thereof, shall *not* be yours to eat.

(Please note that paying a killer (butcher, slaughterer, supermarket, burger bar) to kill on your behalf has always been accessory to murder under law, both human and cosmic.) The law "Do Not Kill" does not apply only to Jews & Christians, neither does it extend only to human beings; still, it's a tall order to wish for a humane, vegetarian society when we can't even keep from genocide over oil, race, dollars & domination.

Blessed are the peacemakers - and pity those who kill for food, sport, profit or fashion - they should observe their quarry carefully, for this will be their fate after death.

Is there a problem with children? 7:36pm on 15 Jan 2009 Well said Jane Lilley! Kids need encouraging, not constant criticising - if we as an adult society have failed to provide them with sufficient clubs and activities (that we ourselves enjoyed) to occupy, stimulate and develop them, how about we blame ourselves, since we hold the power? That would be more courageous (and useful, since admitting our tort would help us to change for the better) than pointing the finger at our vulnerable juniors.

When I was a youth, I worked hard at Grammar School, as well as in jobs paying as little as £1.10 an hour (9 hours for £10 on a Saturday, aged 14 in Maggie's 80's). After years of working for nothing (despite being talented enough to successfully study for the Oxford entrance exam from my unheated council house bedroom), I became disillusioned with work as a means of getting on in life, due to these and other similar experiences (of being exploited for no recompense).

Therefore, I can thoroughly relate to Youth becoming despondent or despairing of doing the right thing in the face of constant negative imaging, stereotyping and criticism.

There is a metaphysical school of thought that says, what we think, say and do creates our reality. If we constantly hector and belittle our successors, they will go bad - if we encourage, support and admire them, they will get better and better.

Which is better? You choose...
Do any diets work? 7:27pm on 15 Jan 2009 Of course diets work, if you stick with them. Eat less, do more - and you will lose weight.

The trick lies in changing your lifestyle permanently - it's no good starving for a month and then going back to the fish-and-chip and deep fried Mars bar diet - the fat will come back (because you're putting it back in).

As for slimming pills - any allopathic pills have harsh effect and therefore negative side-effects - try something natural!

I recently tried Green Tea extract capsules (315mg, H&B). I only used 1 a day, in the morning - and it had me running around cheerfully doing jobs, where I might otherwise have been moping around feeling middle-aged and overweight. In addition, since then (and without constant use), I have lost half a stone in weight.
Can the flu jab give you the flu? 7:21pm on 15 Jan 2009 Since my childhood, when I had no choice, I've only had one immunisation, for typhoid, which made me ill and meant I spent my whole holiday ill.

After witnessing my friend's healthy 3 year-old son descend into Autism, and go from a bright happy boy into a disturbed and mentally damaged child within weeks of having his MMR jab, I can wholeheartedly pledge no child of mine will ever be immunised without my informed consent and explicit permission. God help anyone who opposes this - they will need His intervention.

I wouldn't even raise children in this country, due to the current climate of fear (war on terror? pfft) and the insidious erosion of freedom on this tiny, over-crowded, cold, polluted island of ours.
Payday loans: 'Never a borrower or a lender be'? 7:14pm on 15 Jan 2009 These loan sharks should be banned forthwith.

I've just posted a comment about liberal freedom, but the cat-of-9-tails is too good for any usurer who charges over 100% on a loan - this is fraud, theft, deception - call it what you will, they are robbers.

Shame on them, and shame on us and the government for not clamping down on them. It is the poorest and most vulnerable who are suffering.
Should life mean life? 7:11pm on 15 Jan 2009 I think anyone who proposes life without parole, should be forced to visit a prison, preferably a notorious one - the recent TV programme where stars have visited gaols has seen all of them moderate their previously harsh views.

Second, I think that those few who do still call for a death penalty (I might be in favour of it for war crimes, mass murder, mass rape etc - but that would put me at odds with the MoD) - they should be taken to Iran to watch a few public executions first. And if they still like that system, let them stay there, and let us enjoy our hard-won culture of liberal freedom.
Ban the chuggers? 7:06pm on 15 Jan 2009 Ban the free paper distributors first. Their product is frivolous, clogs the streets and landfill, is not distributed or recycled properly, the staff are overworked and underpaid and under-motivated ethically (eg. to ensure all papers are distributed, or recycled if not - especially in cold weather).

Of course, this is much less of a soft target than charities, because the newspaper owners are making a profit (I presume that's why they are in business?) and will obviously fight to preserve their interests.

Keep the chuggers, they're keeping your taxes down and helping people and things that really need it. Ditch the free London papers, they're an environmental disaster - ask a tree what it thinks! :D
