Choosing the next Dalai Lama 10:20am on 17 Mar 2009 I agree that there is too much on this blog about Tibet - it relects our western obsession with the DL. I would like to see more on Taiwan which is a more hopeful issue.
Competitive elections in China? 12:09pm on 10 Mar 2009 I agree with the comment #1 about the greater importance of judicial independence. But I do not see why the CCP should choose to voluntarily limit its power and subject itself to external scrutiny by judges. Chinese public opion seems quite happy to blame a few local officials for corruption so why introduce a system which might threaten people closer to the top?.
The last bangs 1:46pm on 10 Feb 2009 The difficulty the authorities have limiting the use of fireworks emphasises the importance of public opinion in China. Yet sometimes westerners write as though in China the government is all powerful. The thing which astounded me on a trip to China was the extent to which people ignore traffic regulations. And I thought London driving was bad!

Whilst I enjoy all your posts I am surprised by your choice of topics. You ignored the Chinese ships to Aden story and you have ignored the Taiwan issue. Your choice seems eccentric. But I am very glad you are posting again.

Catching my breath 09:25am on 04 Sep 2008 Have fun on your break James. I continue to enjoy your blog but I just wish that those people who do not enjoy it would stop reading it. They clutter up the comments board with their whinges. Perhaps the blog needs a warning "THIS BLOG CONTAINS MATERIAL WHICH MAY OFFEND - CHINESE PEOPLE OF A DELICATE NATURE ARE STRONGLY ADVISED NOT TO READ FURTHER. THEY SHOULD TRANSFER AT ONCE TO THE CHINA DAILY SITE."
Xinjiang in mind 12:56pm on 17 Jun 2008 What I like about this blog is that it attracts interesting comments from Mainland Chinese people. Often they add information or correct specific points in James' blog. The blog is enriched.

But how do we shed the tedious "the West hates China" brigade? They greet any criticism with shocked outrage and then remind us of the Opium Wars or the burning of the Old Summer Palace or whatever.

Perhaps they should copy China's ambassador in London - Madam Fu Ying. She argues the governments case strongly but with considerable charm. In particular she assumes that the people in the UK wish to be China's friends and therefore differences are the result of a lack of understanding.

Alternatvely the paranoid brigade could confine their English reading to China Daily and avoid being shocked.
