Globespan grounded - but why? 11:24am on 17 Dec 2009 Sounds very dodgy. Wonder if this halcyon lot will come in and buy the assets cheap from the administrators?

Similar practices are being reported from major accountancy fierms and banks - give poor advice, watch a company go under, buy it cheap friom administrators - losing the previous owners money, cancelling all debts and gettinga cut price ciompany for yourself.

I don't know if it illegal, but it is morally wrong.

If Gordon wanted to change the constitution, he has been Pm for 2 years, and in Cabinet for 12... surely the run up to a General Election is not the best time to introduce such dramatic legislation for which he has no electoral mandate. Stick the proposals in the manifesto and let us decide.

Also we could focus ion the failure of his PFI projetcs, the failure of NHS reforms, the failings in Defence procurement and service provision and the failings in the treasury.
Quadratic equations and away days 1:56pm on 15 Jan 2009 As ever though, all this support; 1-1 tuituiion, ports coaches, psychologists etc are targetted at a small part of the school population. The majority get left to sink or swim by their own ends. Those who are motivated (or whose parents are) may drive themselves through to excellent results and the career they want. But suurely too many are in the middle, achieving average grades, or barely passing, or not being disruptive, but still falling behind. They are the ones who need teh same support to be available in schools to encouyrage them on so they can fulfil their potential - in the labour marketm, in their family, in their life, in their community amnd in Scotland. Targetting money only to those who are most vocal is part of the cause not the solution.

Can wyou look into the suggestion that the government loan to banks is being charged at 12% interest. This would explain why banks won;t drop their interest rate charged to each other, or us - that would cause them a 6+% loss on the value of the loans. It could also explain the reluctance to draw down those funds from the government.

Can you confirm if reports that the government bail-out is at 12% interest is true. If so, one can see why the banks would then not lend it at 4 or 5% to us, since they would make a huge loss. This could also explain their reluctance to raw down these funds.
Forcing the banks 11:10pm on 06 Nov 2008 Allegedly the funding provided by the government is at 12% interest. This si why the banks want to repay it in 2009/10. But it also means that if they lend it to each other, or us at 5%, they take a massive hit on the lending.

Does anyone in Nu Labour understand finance, economics or even maths?
Reporting medical research 3:21pm on 24 Oct 2008 The human touch is everything that is wrong with BBc News. Stop trying to make it sioft and relevant! It should be fact based and have more interviews with ehavy hitters not with someone witha disease. That adds emotion to the story and health and science are no place for emotion in that sense.

If you carry on like this it will soon be as awful and unwatchable at ITV news.

Surely the problem was the otherway around. The 'uneducated' as you call them were struck witha desire to own property, and possesions which they could not afford, and they wanted them now. Just because there is an opportunity to buy does not mean that one has to. They thus borrowed heavily to finance these purchases - Car Loans, Mortgages, Credit Cards, Overdrafts - without considering if they could pay them.

I fully agree that the banks should have better regulated to whom they leant money (after all Shareholders and Savers do not want Loans defaulted), but an equal burden must rest with those who borrowed more than they could afford to repay.

In a way they and the banks commited the same mistakes - borrowing long term and financing it short term, or borrowing more than they could finance.

Let us hope that the Government is not making the same mistake borrowing billions from the (mainly) Middle and Far Eastern banks. After all, if we (or America) cannot repay the debt - due to decreasing tax income as a result of the impending recession - then does that mean the chinese will reposess us? Or are these loans unsecured, in which case, I hope that we are lending to the banks at a higher interest rate than we are borrowing at.
