Olympic evictions 4:59pm on 21 Jul 2008 I agree with #7 on this one.

The government should focus on its own people rather than trying hard to impress the world. I really don't think the Olympics is that serious a deal.

But then again there's the conflict between the central and local government. It's been a big and complex problem since forever...
Emergency clean air 3:52pm on 21 Jul 2008 Sigh... I just wish that someday there could be long-shot plans rather than last minute preparation when it comes to public benefits. The people are supportive but don't push it too far.

I'm not the mayor so it's not my call.

The westerners are judging us, yes. But why should we care more about their opinions when we should really be working hard on improving the lives of the citizens? Isn't the citizens the essence of a nation?? Win the citizens, win everything... Well then there's always the split of opinions in-between the central government and the local government. In certain areas the governor is less than useless.

"Face" is always a big issue for the current government. Sometimes it makes me wonder who the hell is in charge of PR - if you can't do things right, at least make it look better.

James, I see that after you've heard different voices, you've become more and more objective, although little but there's still a progress. I hope people could learn from you. And I wish that e extremist from either side, the pro and anti-chinese side could give it a rest. Not everything is against China, but then not everything about China is evil and primitive, okay?

China has its flaws and made LOTS and LOTS of mistakes, not to mention the still awfully handled PR.

But then, is every country or even every person perfect? No, we ALL have flaws, we ALL make mistakes. Should we then go around and point at each other because we think we are better than them?? No, we don't do that in real life, because if you do that, it's called nosy and you'll be the most unpopular person in the school/company, unless of course, you are the leader. It's true when it comes to the nations.Why has it to be so reasonable for a country to point at another country's nose and accuse it for the obvious mistakes that everybody knows is wrong?? For that I blame the US, it's also in their culture that they're the Saviour of the world, the primitive people needs their rescue, they come by god's name, blah blah blah... you get the hint in ALL the US movies and TV series. And that's fine by everyone??

There're stubborn people everywhere, different countries, different races. Either way you are not going to convince each other so why don't just go back to what you believe and hold on to it? Life is short.

I'm not saying the current government is good. It's far away from good. But then what could we do? What could you do? Evict the current government and use one of your guys to be our national leader? Or to do something you did for the middle east people?

Before you come up with anything productive, you'll not be heard by the Chinese people. Especially when you are saying things using a discriminative tone. Would you expect you to listen to people who looks down at you like a god? No.

And would people PLEASE update their facts? I'm so getting tired of saying this - they're a constant rise of democracy across the country. For one you CAN post different opinions on public forum. In fact there're TONNES of different opinions, and people refer to these resources rather than the CCTV these days. The media also refers to these sources.

Maybe it's nothing for you, but it's a start for the people, why couldn't you appreciate it?

Sometimes I really wish that leaders of countries could spend most of the time doing their job ----- improve their country, benefit their people, and spend MUCH less time that are all wasted in arguments/wars/political crisis... How wonderful the world would be if it's like that way?? But then no, because as human beings we LOVE to fight with each other, picking flaws/defects etc...

The only time that the world would unit together is probably when the aliens starts to invade, like in the movies... =.=
Capping emissions? 5:09pm on 10 Jul 2008 OMG... I can't believe how prejudice some people are!!

First of all -----
China has been encouraging its people to be more environmental friendly in the recent 10 years. In some cities people were asked to bring their own bags to supermarkets in order to reduce the number of plastic bags been used, and people are very understanding and supporting for these environmental rules.

About the air - well, apart from cutting the number of cars there's really nothing to do, because industry is there for a reason.

About the number of cars, I guess you all know that Beijing is about 10 London in size, i.e. you'll HAVE to have cars otherwise just think how long it'll take to get from one end of city to the other end.

Conclusion: environment is definitly something that everyone should keep in their minds, for now there's little that the Chinese could do because we still have large areas that are not so well developed. However, though little but people do put their best effort in to improve the environment. Afterall, it's the city/country they're living in and will be living in for many generations, what made you think that they'd care less than you??

Secondly------
Do u have any idea how people in Britain/London survived during 18th-19th Century?? I'm sure the government wasn't worried about cutting industries even though its people were dying by inhaling the smog and suffering tonnes of health problems as a result. Just not long ago in December 1952, around 12,000 people in London died because of the smog...

No, the greenhouse gas emission was definitly NOT an issue at the time, because of course, you need to develop new technology as an advantage, in order to sit on the top of the world??

There were in total 3 technology revolutions, which lasted for about 200 years for the USA and UK to complete the revolution and become world leading countries. And now you start to worry about the climate ---- of course, the climate is a huge issue and should be concerned seriously. First thing to do, is to blame at China, a still developing country, which only started developing from the recent 30 years, is the major contributor to CO2 emission ----- how nice and generous people you are, your highness.

Please, people, before you blame anyone, put yourself in their shoes for a moment. Remember that as you point your index finger at someone, you are also pointing the rest of the fingers at yourself.

I was only suggesting that people who are so desired to learn the "truth" should at least learn some Tibetan or Chinese first, before they suspect the interpreter had twisted the translation and hence hidden the "truth". Don't you agree??

Was that irrelevant to the topic?? There was no swearing words, no websites/email addresses, no advertising, etc. etc. no nothing...

I just don't understand which bit of it broke the house rules, the moderator is really getting some attitude these days, could you please at least explain it?? Or, yeah, you might just as well remove this post...

Although I must say that the closing of shops and heavy security is not just in Lhasa along, it's in every city where the torch goes on the relay day. Given the huge crowds, for example in big cities like Guangzhou, there were somewhat millions of people welcoming the torch, so I think that's quite necessary...
Xinjiang in mind 11:27am on 23 Jun 2008 To some of the people: Mr Reynolds just provided exactly what you want to hear, or expected to hear from the media.

You see, it's all you guys together with the media, have completed the circle of bias. When there's a need there'll be a market. Nothing that I or anyone above who have close relatives or had lived in Xinjiang for long years, nothing, could change your minds. So why bothering to pretend to be so full of wisdom and knowledge and trying to educate people on their history of their own land?? Do you know it better than them??

As to the question why there are comments stating that the westerners hates all Chinese, and the cultures can't communicate at all - that's because of you guys. Thanks to you.

And may I add - ???????????????,??????????To those of you who can't read Chinese and yet making comments here: it means that you people really like to put yourselves on the moral high ground and look down on other people, appreciating yourself while pitting them all.

Now exactly what makes you think that you are so great, I can never understand.

Man, seriously - I have lost my patient after reading the first 2 paragraphs of your comment. And after I finished reading, I am most disgused with your truely disgraceful opinion. You should feel ashamed.

I know americans won't be all like you and most of them are very caring about people in Sichuan, but as one of them, you can't make wrose impression in front of people, especially Chinese people.

What good would it do to extend all this hatred?? Is all these misunderstanding of Eastern/Western people not enough yet for you??

Please try to think this way: Chinese people are very different with the western people - especially americans, they are very fond of their family, their nation and their race. It's a complex feeling that you would not understand. But just becuase you don't understand it, doesn't make it wrong, do you agree?

So stop acting like you are the only one who sees the nature of things! Just give it a rest!!

If you have so much time/money/energy, please try to do something useful for the people who're suffering right now in Sichuan. Pray for them, donate something or at least SHUT UP!
