24 hours with Ubuntu 5:33pm on 24 Oct 2009 Yeah, I tried some of these 'Distros' and had to give up, just couldn't get any of them to recognise my good old USB modem. So no internet. Oh yeah, I know, why not just change the hardware blah blah blah? Well, why not just change the software and save me the bother. Pity though, as I really wanted to dump Microsoft.

You know full well that what we're seeing here is another bubble, and the worrying thing is we've got a whole discredited bunch of financial cheerleaders wishing it higher and higher. You know the Christmas season'll weed-out many companies barely getting by at the moment. You also know there's an election in the air and the market can't quite make up its mind about where economic policy will take us during the long road to recovery (and it will be long). One thing is certain though, there's a lot of easy money out there at the moment with few avenues for 'investment'. Like it or not there's going to be quite a few sore heads when the market crashes again. This country of ours is well and truly ... .
Banks can learn from retailers 11:00am on 16 Sep 2009 It seems to me Robert that all you're saying is that those taking the 'risks' should shoulder the burden of loss: pretty sensible to me, but you try to convince our hopeless political elite that this is what needs to be done. Anyway just wait till winter arrives it'll be then that we'll see some of these big retailers squeal, yeah, and the banks'll just carry-on in their merry old way as before.
Who'll be shot when banks misbehave? 11:52am on 31 Jul 2009 Spot on Robert. Sadly as I suspect you know, there'll be little positive change to brag about when all this mess is finally over. There'll still be the pigs and they'll still be getting fat.
Business still being crunched by banks 10:31am on 23 Jul 2009 Robert, we own some of these major banks, let's do with them as we wish. State banks are what we have, lets use them to punch a hole in the traditional ways of doing business in the city. We have an opportunity to undermine the reckless gambling culture that was normalised within the leading banks. Let's do it, lets have a openly recognised state banking sector that invests in this country, provides affordable loans in this country and encourages 'real' wealth generation within the other sectors that actually make things and provide useful services.
Can non-execs cure banks' madness and badness? 10:29am on 16 Jul 2009 Robert, forget about the non execs, the problems are: we have a government that is enthralled with the banking elite, a banking elite that have effectively been given the go ahead to 'manage' the global economy in their interests. We have a state sponsored oligopoly which evidently cannot (and will not) be subject to the dictates of the 'free market'. I heard this morning that these recommendations are, again, all about 'self regulation', this'll be a disaster for our democracy and undermine completely whatever semblance of belief there is out there in the market deciding winners and losers.

Many thousands are losing their jobs, their homes and their relationships, some have likely committed suicide. Once viable manufacturing and service companies are going down the tubes and we're likely to be bouncing along at the bottom for well on a decade before things change for the better. But yeah, there are 'green shoots' aren't there? Well, maybe there are for some parts of high finance which is gorging itself on cheap public money while at the same time ripping consumers off with high interest charges on mortgages and low interest on deposit accounts. This is the world we live in. Let's not be under any illusion about the solution: tough punitive regulation. These banks etc. are effectively a part of the state, they have no reasons to act 'prudently' so regulate them till they squeal, until it hurts, until they get the message that this is not their country to do with as they wish.

Why bankers aren't worth it 10:15am on 03 Jul 2009 Oh yeah, forgot to add: it's a shame that Darling seems reluctant to do anything about this and that Brown's boys are trying to stop any EU measures to regulate the banksters.
