Fixing the Jag 6:22pm on 18 Dec 2008 Funny how Vauxhall and Tata have the Government's ear but they have turned a 'deaf ear' to the plight of the Ford Southampton Transit plant which desperately needs support to re-tool for long-term survival.

Surprising given that Soton consists of two increasingly marginal constituencies and Govt policy is all about saving their own necks.

How to spot the English 9:28pm on 15 Sep 2008 Many years ago I was in Germany for an England football match and was told by the locals'Its easy to spot the English - They walk with their hands in their pockets' !
Why banks won't lend 3:59pm on 11 Sep 2008 Where does the banks reticence to lend get them in the end ? There is a perfect example a few doors from me :-

1. Householder couldn't pay higher mortgage at same time as overtime cut.
2. House repossessed .
3. House for sale 15% below last years value.
4. Still on sale with no interest as according to estate agent 'buyers are waiting for further price falls' and 'can't afford higher deposits'.
5. Bank will have to reduce price even further to sell it .
6. Bank takes a loss as outstanding mortgage already > offer price.

Banks need to be sensible . Indirectly colluding in reducing property values will ultimately hurt them.
Legalise Drugs! From maverick to mainstream 10:06pm on 04 Sep 2008 Can't argue with the stats that some guys have clarified, but recent usage in society is hardly a good benchmark .

My point is that 25+ years ago when I was in my late teens regular usage was largely restricted to students . I saw it regularly and indulged myself at uni but almost never saw anyone of my age outside college making much use of it - certainly very rare in my summer jobs at the time . Nowadays drug usage by working class lads is commonplace and my experience is that they don't use it in the same way but more intensively leading to loss of jobs etc .

In my own family over the last few years I have seen for those younger than me a direct relationship between increasing cannabis consumption and failing work , social and personal relationships. Less skunk = happier , healthier, go-ahead lads.
Legalise Drugs! From maverick to mainstream 5:04pm on 04 Sep 2008 Nice idea but there is a problem - Downgrading cannabis has already led to an explosion in use, much as loosening of licensing hours and cheaper alcohol (in real terms) has resulted in a huge increase in binge drinking. Therefore legalising drugs will see a huge uptake in usage .

My generation dabbled in 'pot' , but mainly just drank beer and smoked ciggies , but went to work/college . I know from family experience that current teenage lads who instead smoke skunk , and binge on shots etc , are generally listless , jobless and a drain on society, not to mention frequently very aggressive and in trouble with the police. Legalising drugs will just increase the problem.

I wonder , however , how the mods can allow Shivam_mufc to write 'england are sh!t' and reject a complaint about it .

Presumably, therefore, 'Scotland are Sh!t too' will be also acceptable ?
Knives, guns and teens 12:54pm on 04 Jul 2008 Two points :-

1. Do the stab stats inc murders as there have been widely reported knife murders in Hants last year yet you say there were no incidents?

2. Over the last 5 years behaviour has changed with many inc myself becoming more risk-averse avoiding areas where teenagers congregate , therefore the stats should decline.
Worst over - or not? 09:33am on 01 May 2008 The banks have gone from popping corks to panicking. There's been 2 years of ever-increasing prophecies of a housing price crash but it has not happened even though any economist will point to a direct link between expectations and events . Despite all these harbingers of doom and an unheard of liquidity crisis house prices have just dropped 1% year on year . Crisis ? Hardly . The fact remains that employment is strong , interest rates falling ,and house
supply in many areas is inadequate to meet demand.

House prices may well recover and the liquidity crisis ease if the banks stop panicking and refusing to lend even to strong customers . One wonders if in reality the banks are not now talking up the crisis as a convenient excuse to hugely increase their margins when in reality their position ,as the Governor says, is more sound than they suggest .
