Digging again 11:23am on 25 Jan 2009 It's far too wet to even think of starting to dig our plot. However on the plus side the pesky pigeons have so far left our purple sprouting broccoli alone. With luck we should have some to harvest in a couple of weeks.
Still deciding how early I can risk potatoes in pots in the greenhouse. Might start a pot next week and keep any early growth protected with fleece. Just like you I can't wait for spring.

A few plot holders tried sweet potatoes on our site with mixed results. Not sure of the variety tried. I was given a small plant in the middle of July which made no effort to grow for the rest of the summer. I've been given a couple of sweet potato tubers to eat by Joe who grew some on the plot next to me. He didn't seem too impressed with his crop. I'll see if I can find out more info from other plotters. Perhaps we are just too far north!

Sorry to read about the blight. I’ve lost all my outdoor and indoor toms with blight over the last few weeks.
I’m interested to learn of the no pruning method. My outdoor toms were planted and then left to their own devices and left to grow unchecked. It made no difference and they went down with blight in fact they were probably the first ones attacked. I was considering I might do better next year if I did remove all the side shoots but obviously I need a new plan for my outdoor toms. I didn’t believe that indoor toms got blight but I can now rethink that one as well. I was considering trying to save some seed this year but thanks for the info not to save seed from blight infested crops. Must work on this cage system you mention.

Remember those potatoes in the contaminated manure. Well I left them to grow on to see what would happen and in any case delay the should we, should we not eat them. Initially only some of the potatoes were affected but gradually all were affected. Things seem to improve and the potatoes tried to grow and produced lots of top growth although never looked quite as they should. A few people have looked at them, photographed them, taken video of them and the general opinion now is that they should be safe to eat. Well eating is one thing enjoying them something totally different. Anyhow all have now succumbed to blight. What a season!

It looks like our tomatoes and potatoes have the first signs of the dreaded blight this weekend. At least we have some tomatoes in the greenhouse which I hope will be okay.

It's good when the produce is ready in the allotment. Deciding what to eat straight away, what might be best frozen or what can be made into jam or preserved in some other way.

Food thoughts 09:20am on 20 Jul 2008 I don't have any long borders so I too spend too much time in the fruit and veg plot. These days I never know who might turn up to inspect the plots!

That's my excuse sorted.

Thanks for the help on the contaminated manure saga.
Enjoyed the programmes from Hampton Court and it was good to have Gardeners World back on TV this week. Very impressed with your success with that basil, bought from the supermarket, split up and planted. All my efforts with basil from seed end up with withered plants before they get big enough to use in the kitchen. Must try it this summer before it's too late.
