Moyes & O'Neill lead by example 2:43pm on 13 Feb 2009 Ah Parish87, a Liverpool fan I see. I accept that you're in a good position to make rational fair-minded comments about Mr Moyes then.... You do seem like a sensible knowledgeable fan but your initial comments possibly had a club v club agenda.

Do you not think that finishing 7th (in your first full season), 17th, 4th, 11th, 6th, 5th and currently sitting in 6th represents significant progress? This is down to the manager do you not agree? Bearing in mind that the said manager has had very little money (comparatively speaking) I think your negative comments smack a little of anti-Everton bias.

And no, getting humiliated by Steaua Bucharest was an awful result but I don't think that makes Moyes a bad manager, do you?
Moyes & O'Neill lead by example 1:34pm on 13 Feb 2009 Good blog, it's nice to hear that Moyes and O'Neil are getting recognition for doing great jobs at Everton and Villa.

And Parish87, what on earth are you talking about? Moyes saved Everton from potential relegation at the back end of the 01/02 season, finished 7th the next and then following that did finish 17th admittedly. However, to say that Moyes' Everton have finished just outside the bottom 3 with consistency is laughable. Check your stats.

And as for the comment about failing to qualify for the latter stages of the Champs League, drawing Villareal was an incredibly unfortunate draw (especially considering that Liverpool only drew TNS after failing to make the Top 4). Think before you speak.

I imagine that you're the type of fan who'd love the 39th game and gets over excited when Sky advertise 'Grand Slam Sunday'.

Why don't the BBC just print T-Shirts with this on then all the pundits on MOTD can simply wear them too so that football fans don't have to sit there listening to this tripe. Everyone knows it, let's talk about something else.
Capello springs surprise with Terry choice 10:27am on 20 Aug 2008 Kapnag (218) makes a good point. Most people on here seem to base their argument around who their favourite player is (or whether they're a Utd or a Chelsea fan).

Terry is a bit of an idiot at times but he's a natural leader. He was Chelsea captain at 23 which says something. Rio would've been probably as good a choice in my opinion but he didn't get it so let's back the guy who did.

Why do England 'fans' want an excuse for their team to fail all the time? I'm sure they're not of the same attitude for their club (ie berating the manager after 3 pre-season friendlies, saying they'll refuse to attend matches if so and so is captain, making someone the player of the year one year and then booing him off the pitch the follwoing season after a couple of bad games etc).

I know that you shouldn't hold peoples past against them for ever but it's taken Ferdinand an awful long time to grow up and I find it hard to respect him a great deal.

Terry is just as bad at times. The thing that gets me most about him is not that he's done all these stupid things in the past (though they do highlight him as being a bit of a child) but rather that he peaked as a defender a couple of seasons ago (when Chelsea bought their 2 titles) and then it seemed that he started to believe his own hype. He could've really kicked on to be the best centre back in the world in my opinion but something went wrong and he seemed to lose the ability to be humble (which I think is quite a desirable trait in a leader). He's generally quite an obnoxious character now no matter how much he bleats on about the captaincy meaning so much to him. Plus, I see him now (no matter how hard I may try not to) as a symbol of chelsea who in turn represent everything that is wrong with the English game. Bunch of wide boys with no soul for the game and a load of johnny come latelys.

As for Stevie G. How many chances does he need to prove himself at international level? I'm not saying that he shouldn't play (far from it - he's a class act and I'm an Everton fan) but rather that he simply doesn't seem to replicate his form for country that he does for club (for some reason). Consequently, why should he be given the arm band simply to 'gee him up' a little bit. If he doesn't feel the responsibility of playing for England and needs the captaincy to make him try a bit harder (which seems to be the very bottom line of giving him the arm band) then I don't think he deserves it frankly. What if we give him the arm band and he continues to perform averagely at best? Should he be dropped from the team due to the fact that the last plan to get him to replicate club form for country has failed? Do me a favour. The 'Gerrard for captain to get him performing' argument is tired and flawed.
Liverpool may fall short in title tilt 10:59am on 15 Aug 2008 Out of courtesy, I'm going to reply to the above post. That's actually a valid point. Most Liverpool fans who actually know anything are not bigging up their teams chances too much this season. The problem is definitely with the press and other forms of media. This is becoming one of those tired arguments (much like the problem left side for England used to be) that gets more weary with each passing season.

As for 'biscan kop legend', please tell me this is a joke. The only reason he wasn't the worst player at the club was because you had Djimi Traore.
Liverpool may fall short in title tilt 00:10am on 15 Aug 2008 As an Everton fan, I was gutted to see Liverpool sign Robbie Keane. I've always been a huge fan of his. He works hard, has plenty of goals in him and is a fantastically technically gifted player. I've been surprised that it's taken so long for him to get a move to a supposedly bigger club than Spurs. Thats why I'm having problems with any Liverpool fans not agreeing with this signing. There's every reason to suggest that he'll be the perfect foil for Torres. So what if it means moving Gerrard out of the 'hole' that he enjoyed last season? Stick him on the right and drop Kuyt who I have a lot of time for but is not a winger and never will be. It's not rocket science.

As for Liverpool winning the league though, it wont happen this year. Its the same old tired debate that happens each pre season. Last year Torres was the missing piece in the jigsaw (even though Liverpool were far more than 1 top striker behind chelsea and man u) and that proved fruitless. I don't see whats changed this time. Man U haven't weakened as far as I'm aware and Chelsea (by signing Scolari and Deco) have certainly strengthened. Liverpool have made one quality proven prem signing (Keane) and a number of other average signings who most football fans wouldn't even recognise if they passed them in the street. The conveyor belt of average players going in and out of Anfield int the last few seasons makes me laugh to be honest. It was a trend started by Houllier and Benitez seems happy to carry it on.

I have two points to make (which I'm sure will be shouted down):
1. If Benitez hadn't won the CL (which is clearly a success, I'm not denying that), his league performances would have seen him sacked by now.
2. Would we really be having this discussion if it wasn't liverpool? How long can a club live on it's past for? They've underachieved for a number of years now and I honestly don't see them being any closer to winning the league this coming season than they were under Roy Evans. You can throw up players like Degen all you like, but I think that's valid.
Lottery of the tribunal system? 12:26pm on 17 Jul 2008 to Josh23 earlier, you make some sensible points but I take issue with your idea that the 'top clubs' pay a small amount of money each year which is then distributed amongst the smaller clubs. An additional sum could then be paid (decided by tribunal) for outstanding talents. There are a couple of problems that I can see here:

1. Who are the top clubs? The whole of the premiership? The 'Big 4'. If the whole of the premiership, why should newly promoted clubs who in more recent times have not been so 'big' (stoke for example) pay a tax for being in the premiership?

2. for this to be worthwhile, it would probably have to be more than a small amount of money. If all 20 teams in the Prem were to pay, this would then be split between the remaining 72 (or 73?) clubs in the league. This would probably not be that much and I supect would not go a great distance in paying for numerous overheads.

3. In principal, the smaller clubs receiving the payment from the 'big clubs' would be liitle more than academies for the paying clubs. Why is this fair? Sure, some would be happy to receive a small amount of money each year but if this meant that all their decent players were being poached, I doubt that they would be happy for long. Indeed, most, I imagine, would stop spending money on their own academies.

4. The worst thing about football at present is the ever increasing gap between the top 4 and the rest of the prem and the prem and the championship and the championship and everything below. Why does everyone seem intent on preserving this gap? Why should any system be put in place to prevent so-called smaller clubs from building a good team without a load of money and maybe getting a promotion or two. Josh, that's not a personal thing but I don't see how your proposal would help any smaller clubs who produce their own talent.

Admittedly, the guy is essentially a businessman and is concerned about losing out on money but, I think, in the circumstances this is actually a fair stance.

The problem for smaller clubs (no disrespect to anyone intended) is that they need to produce good young players to survive. They can then benefit in one of two ways. First, the player develops, stays, improves the first team and makes the whole process worth while. The club either benefit here on the playing front (with possible promotion if enough good young talent is used) and the players may well move on for a price nearer their market valuation if they're successful with their club.

Second, the player is sold before he plays any meaningful number of games for his club but the price again reflects the market value (ie £5m for Ramsey). The club benefit here and it makes the process worth while for them. Sure, the buying club take a gamble but is not any big fee a gamble?

The current system is poor. I know there's no guarantee that any good young player will make it but for the past couple of years everybody who knows Bostock has been saying he's got a hell of a chance. Maybe employment law prevents somebody under the age of 16 signing a contract of any meaningful length but there should be a more suitable system in place to reimburse the selling club. Effectively, the situation at present is that the clubs that are producing these players are just academies for premiership clubs if the premiership club picks the player up before they're 16.

I don't blame Spurs one bit for this. It's not the most moral of moves on their part but all they're doing is exploiting a flawed system. Oh and can people stop admiring Aresenal in this? Sure they paid big money for Walcott and Ramsey but they had no choice in the matter. Those players were contracted and Arsenal had to pay the going price. I don't recall them offering to pay the going rate for Fabregas or Merida.
Man Utd should sell 'slave' Ronaldo 1:32pm on 11 Jul 2008 This is a good article. My only issue is with all the outraged responses. Is anyone actually surprised by the conduct of any party here?

Real have a history of doing things like this. It's how they've set about geting all their top players (galactico's really, not ALL their top players) in recent years. It's not honourable and it wins you no fans but it does seem to work.

Cristiano Ronaldo has always been supremely arrogant and it doesn't surprise me one bit that he's angling for this transfer (or an improved contract at utd). He's alienating himself at old trafford but, I sense, as long as he gets what he wants I don't think he'll care one bit.

Sepp Blatter, well he's quite simply an idiot. The only surprise is that it's taken him so long to stick his oar in and make an idiot of himself. He really should be reprimanded for this. It is outstndingly bad behaviour.

And, going back to the example of 'the biter bit' (in the main article) I agree with this totally. I'm an Everton fan and don't particularly hold up the example of Rooney as evidence in this case. It's true that Newcastle started that bid off and, understandably, Utd entered the race for the hottest young english talent around (though I disagree with the early post from equipe do som. Whether the money received by the club benefits that club is totally irrelevant. If i stole a car and the person from whom i stole it received more form the insurance than the car was worth, would that make the theft acceptable? Of course not). The case that does spring to mind is that of Dwight yorke. Although it was a bit more subtle, Utd blatantly unsetttled a player who was up to that point happy with his club and his role. Utd do this. Accept it. They're just a bit more subtle. For United to now come out as this poor injured party, I guess you reap what you sow.

bottom line is that, unfortunately, there is little honour or loyalty these days in football. Hopefully, ronaldo will go for a massive fee and Real will embark on their usual course of managerial sackings and upheaval and Ronaldo will always look back with regret on leaving Utd.
