The iAwards - not quite the BAFTAs 11:26am on 18 Nov 2009 agree on the fuel cube sounding good. Indeed these all sound like good products, but am surprised that we only get news of the event in blog rather than report - so obviously havent received the editor's news worthiness level (?) also how interesting it is that the winners are for use overseas or in medical establishments rather than by the average person on the streets/homes of UK, I dont think that's wrong just pointing out that the leading innovations are not necessarily things that the majority of people will encounter again.
Vaccination gets the green light 5:15pm on 17 Oct 2009 flyingqwertyiop - it sounds great to say that the PCT can order more when available, but that assumes large quantities are available quickly. A practice I know has been told to expect the 500 doses for 11,000 patients ie initial supply is for 250 patients (2 dose/patient)which is 2.3% of list size, but if the GPs in the rest of the country also ask their PCTs for follow up supplies- and it is going to take 3 to 4 weeks to distribute the initial 500 per practice- how long will it take to receive the follow up & will the system be in place to distribute as required? The answer is surely in terms of months.

As I understand it a computer algorithim is generating a list of each patient's priority. so that it will not be the flu clinic system we are used to but an individual invite. Where the individual decides not to take the jab a new individual will be identified as the next in line.
The Sidekick Cloud Disaster 5:29pm on 13 Oct 2009 I think all would agree this is a poor ad for the cloud. I guess the sidequick loss story raises a question of whether MS had integrated that data into the normal ms cloud set up or if it continued on its own independent cloud server which was not provided the resilience features that were shown to rory last year.
I hesitate to use the cloud because I do not yet feel mobile internet is strong enough for me to guarantee access wherever I may go, which means I need local copy. Perhaps cloud for backup but not the main docs under use.
The story also raise a data security question, not in the conventional sense of some unauthorised individual having access to data but that too much data in one place becomes target of rogue state or terrorism. Perhaps they have delt with the risk of a car bomb etc but I am reminded too much of Tom Clancy's story of NYSE data being lost through a deliberate attack on servers recording the data. Not through internet attack but a disreputable software developer installing an update to all servers.
No-one can rewrite political history 3:37pm on 14 Sep 2009 why on earth is it that the BBC keeps giving mandelson air time? He might be a new friend of the PM, he may have been given a department, but he has been given no authority by the people of britain to do anything on their behalf, he is unelected and so feels free to let anything he wants come from his mouth to support the Govt, because he feels answerable to no one. Please next time get someone to defend the government who has a right to be in the govt and speak to the public!
How to track swine flu 11:40pm on 13 Jul 2009 It would be interesting to know how other european nations are logging cases and responding to incidents. Up until mid may UK & Spain had roughly similar statistics... UK slightly lower than spain, but since late may UK has grown to 10x the cases of spain - is this due to prevention of spread methodology? Warmer weather in spain? Poor medical data recording/analysis? or spanish non-representing for treatment?

anecdotally nonpresentation to UK medical services is high, with a month or so ago some medical students suggesting it had gone through an east mids uni with practically noone going to their GP cause they'd not registered away from parents address / struck after finals / symptoms like a combination of cold & hangover.
Government not defeated 11:45pm on 07 Jul 2009 @ oldnat, I suspect that something would have happened along those lines, I wonder if the other alternative is that the tax system valid to apr'09 would simply have continued to apply until a new budget passed - or is the budget only valid for a year? Does anyone know?

however what concerns me more is that there is legislation from the '60s that says it is ok to assume the budget will pass so start collecting taxes - what were they on back then? Surely the budget should not be brought in until passed by parliament, else what's the point of giving a vote?
A browser-free Windows 7 5:56pm on 25 Jun 2009 I use firefox, I also have chrome and Safari installed (as well as bundled IE) but I still dont understand the point of the EU ruling... MS shouldnt install IE because it stops people downloading free software from the net??? If MS want to bundle let them. If people want to provide other browsers let them, but why suggest that one manufacturer (MS) advertise another's products?

surely the EU's ideal answer is to stop all bundling of software at point of sale - including the OS then it will truly be up to the consumer whether to get MS Win or to get Linux or to get.... any other OS on the market.

Surely an upgrade would have offered the chance of all old software to be imported, not just IE so as long as a new win upgrade did not add a browser not already present it would have complied.
Council tax bands redacted 1:43pm on 23 Jun 2009 The redaction of the band letter is nonsensical as it can be discovered from other data given. all the information regarding the dates the bill refers to, council and actual amount of the bill are provided, anyone living in that council that kept the papers that came with their old bills can soon see which band the property falls in. If you dont have your own old bill the data might be found on the internet, else an FOI to the council would reveal it.

I suspect the reason for redacting is so that no one compiles a nice little list of which MP lives in what banding and goes on to suggest that no one be able to claim any higher than an A or B.
Turning tech into telly... 1:28pm on 19 May 2009 The question that comes to my mind is how many other news items are turned into full reports ready for broadcast, but get dumped because of the more worthy news on heavy days? Why do we not have access to them all on the news website? BBC has gone to some expense covering this story surely the little bit extra to cover server space would not cost much more.
Are you working from home today? 10:11am on 16 May 2009 I wasn't supposed to be working at home, I am supposed to have friday as my one day a week off. But the phone rang and I answered it, The email came and I opened it, the postie came to the door and delivered me a letter. The problem of working from home every day is you end up working from home every day!
