Spain can end Europe's historical failure 10:57am on 01 Dec 2009 SaintInMauritius - valid point: African teams have been improving tournament by tournament as more and more of their players are playing for major teams in major leagues resulting in a removal of the naivety that was witnessed in earlier years. I am still not sure that any African team will achieve the requisite consistency of a whole tournament however and a winter in South Africa undermines much of the advantage of a home continent (NB: Africa is very very big!) venue. It would be great though to see an African team go all the way, really setting the tournament alight.
Spain can end Europe's historical failure 09:59am on 01 Dec 2009 cpjw_2009 - sorry mate, I watch Owen week in week out and despite all our greatest hopes it is the exception when he does put a chance away (or even get a shot off / make contact with the ball). His movement and awareness are still good but he is too slow, not just in running but in shooting etc, to ever again be a consistent threat in top class football. I keep hoping he will begin to prove me wrong, but each outing he looks ever more off the pace.

However, sadly I think you are safe: England's defence, from goalkeeper to all the way across the line, is not good enough. Just possibly, if Lennon and Defoe step up to international class - and that's a very big if - our attacking play could overcome this deficiency, but unfortunately I think Phil Minshull is correct and Spain, in particular, are a different class.
Will South Africa 2010 produce a new Pele? 12:58pm on 24 Nov 2009 Tim, I feel we almost reached the star player your article craves when Ronaldo first burst on the scene (was it three Cups ago?) - I remember being absoltely astonished by the speed of his feet and close control within the tight confines of the penalty area. Unfortunately it all ended in sadness / debacle (?) with his illness in the final, however if that last game had been different perhaps the tournament, and Ronaldo's cotribution, would be recalled more favourably.

Actually, I don't have a problem with either Neville's or Adebayor's celebrations - this is all part of our sanitised society wherein you cannot do anything that may offend someone els; the Arsenal fans had abused him all match so why not give it back?

Before the obvious response, celebrations do not cause riots, idiots cause riots who will feed on any excuse; we must not let governing bodies and hypocritical moralising media take all the passion out of our great game - they have all but done away with tackling as it is, at least leave in some emotion.

However, the stamping was totally out of order and merits a ban in its own right.
Can Man Utd re-write history? 09:10am on 02 Mar 2009 I think United will win the Premier League, but agree with 16 nogginthenogforever that it may get tighter towards the end as United drop points (they have not played all that well all season, just have been extremely good at squeezing out close victories) and Chelsea put pressure on.

Champions League: there is a lot of work to do just to win this tie, never mind the competition, I think it remains wide open.

FA Cup: Chelsea and Arsenal in particular will be huge threats, despite their current presence in the Champions League this is without doubt the best possibility for silver, and United are likely to rest key players.

Conclusion: Premier League only to come this season.
Benitez gets his timing wrong 10:51am on 20 Jan 2009 As a lifelong Man United fan, I still say we write off Liverpool at our peril - we are only top by 4 minutes, 1 at Bolton and 3 at Anfield last night, so let's not carried away.

Truth is, neither Liverpool not United (nor Chelsea) are firing on all cylinders at present - if any of these three put together a sustained run of results they could potentially blow the others away on present form.

One other point - why isn't Mascherano in the team? As an opposition fan I would always be delighted to see him left on the bench and / or Lucas in instead!
Global financial crisis hits Ashley's price tag 4:26pm on 30 Sep 2008 Whilst I have no particular wish to stick up for Mike Ashley, it should be noted that the fees for both buying and selling the club will be considerable - particularly the former, as acquiring a PLC boasting a large number of shareholders is very costly - therefore on Mihir's figures his net profit will be significantly less than £50 million in the final outcome. I would suggest that right now, bargaining positions aside, he would be happy to get out with a break even.
Ferguson will relish Chelsea battle 2:42pm on 19 Sep 2008 I hate to use the tired old cliche, but footbal can be a funny game - witness last week at Anfield, Liverpool had up to that point in the season been struggling for form and were without there two leading players; at 1 - 0 down they could have imploded, but then a bad defensive error changed everything and suddenly Liverpool looked confident whilst United did not get another kick.

I feel Sunday's game could be similar: either it will go to form - and if it does, United will be steam rollered - or a little something, be it an error, piece of magic or even Chelsea paying their great rivals too much respect and allowing United into the game, and it could kick start United's season.

Here's hoping for the latter, but fearing the former!
