Insurance, not nationalisation 1:16pm on 22 Jan 2009 Does Lord Turner really believe that his portestations will eb taken seriously when he has clearly missed the point of what all the fears are based on.

We all know what is on the banks balance sheets its what their off balance sheet liabilities are that is the key issue.

To present this AS something that isn't of coNcern or doesn't matter sums up the hapless managemnent of the FSA and their inherent inability to get ahead of the curve save always being masters of being able to close the door after the horse has bolted.

Robert please ask Lord Turner at the first opportunity whether he or the FSA have had any conversations with the banks and lets not foregt Insurance companies on what their off balance sheet liabilities are and if he hasn't why not!
Mervyn and leverage 4:12pm on 21 Jan 2009 What this mess has shown is that the FSA really hasn't had a clue since day one.

Bringing them into the loop when they have neither the experience or foresight was just another metioric failure of the present Prime Minister.

When the stewards enquiries eventually start it will become undeniably clear the FSA got too cosy to the banks and took their words without asking sufficient questions.

What this situation has shown us is that those who should know better know little to nothing and anyone aware of what really goes on ateth FSA would realise they are singularly incapable of getting their own house in order let alone any banks!

Perhaps we need someone to regulate the Regulator so that we can have some confidence where none exists.

Hopefully the various Parliamentary Committees will bring them to task properly and expose fully to the taxpaying public the continuous level of incompetence that comes from their Canary Wharf offices.

I hope this note gets published as the damage they as the Regulator have caused cannot continue any more and a major clearout there is the only way to secure order over errant banks.

Poor old dear, it looks like he's ready for permanent retirement where he can dwell on his past mistakes!

There is no added value to the economy or our jobs in him hanging about another day, so please go now Crash and lets celebrate.

Like a useless CEO going and the shares moving up 10% you can bet the country will rally on his permanent departure.
Hostile environment 12:50pm on 19 Jan 2009 Nick surely because someone wants to wear hush puppies doesn't make them past it. You may have a scrap with the manufacturers of hush puppies if you continue in that vein.

What we will have now is an element of gravitas by someone who has been there before and got problems sorted as distinct from a government run on spin who by their previous leadres admission survived by luck and clearly not judgement.

It will be good to seen Mandy at last devoured and decimated by a real man of merit and credibility.
Rescuing the economy, not banks 10:39am on 19 Jan 2009 This plan can't work because the banks have shown though their own actions they can't be trusted by what they say.

Barclays, possibly the biggest player in the UK in derivitive products has chosen to say all is well,. Yet we are unable to establish what is toxic and what is not.

It like so many have a machismo factor that beggars belief, and its management haven't understood investors and customers deserve more than the management are prepated to give i.e clear transparent information.

To assume the same management will secure the long term when they have put the banks credibility at the top of everyones agenda, is sheer folly.

Any one of Barclays or the other clearing bank senior executives could be replaced and no one coudl do a worse job.

Yet for osme insane reason we believe that its better the devil you know than the one you don't.

That's why Obama is the next President of the USA. Our tired and tested 'Old Guard' are not the safe pairs of hands we need now, simply because they have shown how incompetent they really are and teh only thing they have been good at is screwing up and lining their own pockets .

This plan will never work because there is no obligation on transparency so lies of the past will now be brushed under the carpet.

The best thing we can do is hope they fall on their swords and new fresh honest blood is allowed to do what the old guard can't and that is to be upfront and honest.

Paymasters should expect nothing else and if not forthcoming then then let them go under and pick them up for a song.
Taxpayers' short-term loans to business 3:03pm on 13 Jan 2009 Another stunt by Labour that will make no difference. They see big numbers equalling problem solved.

They know nothing as we always suspected!!

If the taxpayer is taking so much risk why do we have banks. I would like to cherry pick who I deal with and find my company protected if the payee pushes off leaving me in a mess.

The State under Messrs Brown, Darling and Mandleson just don't seem to understanmd the State can't buck natural economics.

Why should my hard working employees in my small company battle on whilst contemporary companies who never invested in their staff and had dire management get support?

A strong economy requires business to be ultimately self sufficient, this proposal will extend the Social Services nanny state to business and decimate what is little is left of what we call an economy.

The weak must go to the wall so the strong can survive otherwise we get a scenario where teh good can't improve because they are up against inept contemporaries who survive through bloodsucking the taxpayer.

This is not Social Economics but the economics of the Lunatic Asylum and inmates appear to be running the show!!
Vulnerable small firms 11:53am on 13 Jan 2009 Robert your sychophantic enthiusiasm for Tesco is truly dreadful.

They have screwed suppliers to the point where they can give no more.

We should not be congratulating Tesco but damning them for abuse of position and strength in no less a way than banks shoudl rightly be damned fo their atrocious performance.

We need a strong economy not one where a few companies are bleeding every supplier and competitor in the chase for lower prices.

We need to move away from eth big and brash where teh product range is large but the quality is garbage, and revert to the local stores and service providers where the human touch is still there.

When Big chains like Tesco say they are creating "new" jobs lets not forget how many they put out of work through deep subsidised discounts.

We don't need them on every street and local coubcillors need to basis change parking restrictions to get and reduce rates to get the commuities thriving again.

Big is no longer better but a sham under the guise of improvement. Local will always be better socially and economically if supported.

To be in charge and see your profits shrink means you should take the pain properly and see either a pro rata reduction in the basic or take a substantially bigger reduction period.

The real time value of pay for executives needs to be addressed as it is completely based on upwardly moving levels regardless of performance irrespective of delivery.

Such a formula is not capilatism but sheer obscene greed and until there is pain at eth high levels of corporate UK, we will not perform as we should because the comfort factor is so high it doesn't matter what the company does.

We ar now the era of real time economics not debt based lala land and the numbers must reflect that.

Unfortunately Crash Brown and Crunch Darling still can't see that which is why we are not getting out of this rut.
M&S: no ordinary downturn 10:38am on 07 Jan 2009 In times like this Robert your lack of worldly experience is showing.

The key to a company's and this country's success will be the amount of debt it is running on and off balance sheet not the pre tax profits as peopel seem to think.

Expectations of continuing boom conditions were too high so now the muppets who saw stratospheric growth are doubling up with doom and gloom.

We need more transparency of government funding with Labour accepting teh National Audit Offices findings and companys not being allowed any more off balance sheet liabilities.

Once we can see the extent of the damage it will not quite be a piece of cake to get it sorted but the full extent of the problem will then be attacked and sorted far quicker.

Our biggest worries here are still the Banks and large Insurers, by definition they would naturally have the most diverse portfolios so all efforts must be made there to get the truth out in the open without it the problems will drag on far longer than they need.
