Tories tweaking their message 3:30pm on 23 Nov 2009 #18 I agree we are sinking in a sea of tat. But I have a solution...you state we are being forced to buy it....we are not. I for one do not buy it and don't intend to. We all have far more than we need and our greed is our undoing.

I agree the government is hell-bent on buying time and one day the chickens will most certainly come home to roost.
Tories tweaking their message 1:56pm on 23 Nov 2009 Cutting debt has to be a top priority for whatever government we have for the simple reason that the interest payable makes it ever harder to pay back if the debt becomes too great....and we certainly have a mammoth debt at the moment.

Anyone who has ever had a credit card debt knows that. You end up paying interest on the interest if you're not careful. That's what got us into this position in the first place....too many people overborrowing and not being able to pay their debts...mainly in the overblown housing market but also in our retail sector.

The ideal position is to be sitting pretty on a pile of cash earning you interest....now I wonder which countries are in that position? Ah yes of course...China and the other easteren economies. Also Norway I believe who salted away their profits from oil in the North Sea and are using it to pay peoples' pensions.
Map of the Week: Floods of Tears 3:26pm on 21 Nov 2009 Since we are told we can expect more of these catastrophic weather events I for one will always add to my list of requirements for any property I live in that it is not going to be susceptible to flooding. There is only so much the government can do in terms of flood prevention measures.

Meanwhile I wish all the good luck in the world to those who have been affected. It must be one of the worst things to be flooded and horrendous to sort out afterwards.
Rare earth: The New Great Game 3:16pm on 21 Nov 2009 I find myself in agreement with so much of what's been said above. It must be some of what I inherited from my late father who was an engineer and a member of the armed forces. He didn't suffer fools gladly and I agree sometimes it's better just to get on with it instead of constant hand-wringing. We could have been streets ahead with investment in green technologies such as a Severn Barrage. We are apparently the best served country in Europe to benefit from wave and wind power. If not a barrage there are other ways to harvest wave power being developed but how much do we hear about them and how interested is the government? Not very obviously.

My daughter has been working in Beijing for the past 3 years in a British company helping to reduce carbon emissions. She much prefers her Chinese co-workers and rates them as mostly very clever and hard-working. We are soft and complacent here in Europe and it will serve us right if/when China rules the world.
Secret talks to crack the Nutt case 3:23pm on 11 Nov 2009 What a storm in a tea-cup! We all know "drugs" are bad. Does it really matter whether we say they are as bad as A or B? In the bigger scheme of things perhaps the scientists can come out of their ivory towers, stop getting their knickers in a twist and do some real work instead.

There are plenty of real problems in the world for them to address. Perhaps they'd do more good talking to some drug addicts and helping them sort out their lives.

Eighty years after Wall Street crashed, what did we learn? 2:55pm on 29 Oct 2009 Jericoa (previous post) no, you are not the only one......I have recently discovered the New Economics Foundation website (google to find it)in which economics is considered as if people and the planet matter.

We need a whole new way of looking at things; GDP will soon be superseded as a measure of how well we're doing as unlimited growth is not sustainable.

Pause for thought 2:25pm on 16 Oct 2009 We all need to stop borrowing and that includes businesses too. Then growth becomes sustainable and organic instead of based on indebtedness which is only sustainable if interest rates remain low and customers carry on spending. Anything else is inherently unstable and liable to collapse if market conditions change.

There is such an imbalance between us in the west (developed countries) and those in the east (developing countries) that the world needs to have a period in which there is a marked re-adjustment. This means we all have to accept that our present standards of living need to be reduced so that others in the world may have a little more. For those who bury their heads in the sand and try to get back to "business as usual" I fear they won't get away with it for ever. As usual though it is the poorest who suffer in any downturn.

For the planet as a holistic system the recession was the best thing which could have happened as our "growth" was unsustainable and causing untold damage to our environment.

Greed will be our undoing as a species if we don't change our ways and learn to share the earth's finite resources.
Count it, don't follow it (redux) 2:37pm on 13 Oct 2009 I think I heard that the expenses are being scrutinised for the past 5 years so what will happen to those who have left parliament within this time? For instance our ex PM, the one and only Tony Blair who by all accounts shredded his papers pertaining to this issue as he handed over to Gordon.......just a thought to put the cat amongst the pigeons!
