Banks should be boring 8:02pm on 13 Oct 2008 Robert writes ... "investors on the stock market gave something of thumbs down to shares in Royal Bank of Scotland and HBOS" ... a good theory, but not the correct one.

The market is simply reflecting the new valuation of these shares ... no dividends and a greatly diluted share value has now been priced into HBOS and RBS. Lloyds also gets hit because they are being dragged down by the agreement to consume and digest HBOS.

Barclays ... who opted out ... are up .. not as much because they have declared no dividends ... but still up because no dilution for shareholders .... yet.

I initiated a transfer at the start of the week and no sign of it yet!!
Day of reckoning 08:39am on 10 Oct 2008 Alas ... time to re-think the legacy of Mr Greenspan ... he always resisted the idea of regulating the CDS market and in fact went before Congress to insist that it should not be regulated ... hailed as a hero at the time for saving the financial system and giving us stability ... unfortunately that now appears to be a house built on a bubble.
Banks ask chancellor for capital 07:51am on 07 Oct 2008 Well I guess this "unofficial" press release will cause yet another run on bank shares today with the big three leading the way ...

I'm all in favour of reporting the news, but I can't help but wonder if a line is being crossed here ... this will in most probably make / create / trigger todays news of yet more falls in bank shares.

What would have happened to the stock prices of theses banks if this blog had not been written?

We all recognise that free speech is permitted ... and we all also recognise that shouting "Fire" in a crowded theatre is not ... which category does this fall under?

However, if this info was already in the public domain, then its just repeating that info ... or is this new oxygen for the raging fire of panic
How close to capitulation? 5:13pm on 06 Oct 2008 I must admit, I can't help but admire the russian solution to a large sell-off ... just close the market until the panic passes :-)
How close to capitulation? 4:50pm on 06 Oct 2008 What the heck is all this doom and gloom ... the current drop puts us back to where we were in 2005, not 1905 ... its not the end of the world ...

Remember (most appear to forget), stocks can go down as well as up ... when going up, we forgot the "down" bit ... and now that its going down, are we forgetting the "up" bit.

We are in a down cycle as the credit bubble unwinds ... and when done, the stocks will ... gasp ... go up again.

So ... if you are day trading or recently in ... alas, its not good, but on the other hand, if you treat this, not as a casino, but as an investment and go long on your holdings, then you will be OK.
The next accident 08:42am on 23 Sep 2008 It very much reminds me of what happened during the wall street crash. After black thursday of 24 Oct 29 crash, all the bankers got together and devised a rescue plan ... they then proceeded to bid for blue chip stocks well above market rates and thus the slid halted ...this worked in the 1907 crash, but failed in 29 ... after the rise that resulted, folks considered their options over the weekend and then proceeded to sell again ...

Plans to manipulate the market (even if it is $700B) will end in tears ... and so now we have this on-going CDS mess
The American way to fail 10:37am on 19 Sep 2008 Can I propose to max out all my credit cards, they apply to the US Fed to bail me out by taking all my bad debt off my hands? ...

Anybody know where I can apply to do this?
New world order 08:18am on 18 Sep 2008 Sigh! ... common sense appears to have left the building, instead fear has moved into the arena ... looking at balance sheets and I can see no good reason for the drops we see, but my gut tells me we have lots more blood to see yet ...
Lloyds to buy HBOS 10:07am on 17 Sep 2008 This all stinks to of insider trading and market manipulation ...

Stock opens at 1.85 goes up a bit then suddenly dives to 88p (Heavy shorting that perhaps causes lots of auto stop-losses kicking in) ... then suddenly the news of a LTSB-HBOS merger at £3 30 mins later and price shoots back up ...

Somebody has made a killing here very obviously using inside information. If this is just "the free market" then I'll eat my hat.
