Whilst millions of us struggle to make a decent living - the leader (no matter how good his track-record) of a bank which only exists thanks to OUR taxes is to potentially earn such obscenely astronomical amounts.
Still, I guess the relatively underpaid PM, MPs & Governor of the Bank of England must feel peeved too?
Cameron shuns thorny EU 12:09pm on 20 May 2009 I find the "head in the sand" or diversionary attitudes of the main UK political parties towards EU elections insulting. (They seem to have a similar contempt for the electorate in local elections).
The EU elections ARE important, they affect us all. Concentrating on the Westminster agenda is NOT doing anybody, regardless of their position on Europe, any favours. This is a EUROPEAN election, and should be fought as such.
Oh, and the media aren't much use on this issue either!
Victor Blank may be proved right (eventually) 11:23am on 20 May 2009 ... unless George Osbourne gets the chance he's intimated to chop the mega-banks down to size - which, if elected, and thanks to the growing public ownership of Lloyds Group, would make this easily the prime target.
Rock revival 11:51am on 23 Feb 2009 Northern Rock used to be a good old-fashioned solid regional building society, until the folly of privatisation and latter day management mistakes, so no wonder the justifiably proud people of the North East are supportive of it. You we're a brave man for going there - well done!
The news of NR's ability to lend will be good news for SOME 1st time buyers, but not those frozen out by the crazy prices still being asked. I just hope that more funds being available does NOT result in higher prices. Personally I feel a return to 20% deposits as a minimum would be prudent, and house prices to stabilize at around 3x - 4x average household income in each locality would be morally and socially acceptable. So, more price deflation needed to remove housing from "speculation" to what it should be, housing for people!
Are Barclays' profits irrelevant? 10:16am on 09 Feb 2009 If GB applied the same criteria to himself as he is to bankers and their bonuses (along with long-term Cabinet colleagues & senior Civil Servants) he should RESIGN TODAY - as his PM's salary and perks are unjustified based on his performance - whether he'd still have a back-bencher's wage next year would be a matter for his Scottish constituents.

Forced convergence of China and US 11:41am on 12 Nov 2008 Why should taxpayers be expected to loan these dinosaurs money - when it is apparent they didn't spend the cash they raised in loans from China & elsewhere wisely?
The US model of free enterprise (which we've slavishly followed in the UK) has had it's time.
Natural justice and the cyclical nature of events over history probably says it's time to allow other parts of the world to do some catching up (or overtaking?) and allow the millions who we in the west have exploited for centuries to have a better life.
Tough, but what right to the transient short-term wealth we've enjoyed for the past couple of centuries do we have?

Surely you should have said: “The QE2 left on HER final voyage”?

Appears so, probably because of the reluctance of some nation states, with the UK carrying the banner, to sign-up properly to EU proposals for co-operation and monetary union.
Never mind, I'm sure the anti-EU element are more than happy that we're in bed with their friends in the USA.
