David Bain's Brain Strain 1:25pm on 12 May 2009 The examples you give London bridge and the Cutty Sark have one major difference;

London Bridge was disassembled, moved and reassembled in one go, leaving nothing behind that claimed to be the original, whereas the Cutty Sark is just having little bits replaced over an extended period.

I would say that as soon as a plank of wood is removed from the Cutty Sark and replaced with another, the original plank becomes a plank that used to be attached to the Cutty Sark, and the replacement then becomes a plank on the Cutty Sark.

Therefore, slowly, over time you will end up with a whole load of planks that used to be part of the Cutty Sark and a whole load of planks that actually are the Cutty Sark.

You could build a ship out of the old planks, but they will always be planks that used to be part of the original ship, as they have been replaced, rather than just moved, as in the London Bridge example.

I wasn't questioning McCain's flight record, merely correcting smileytm303's statement that McCain crashed his plane and killed 140 people.

Not quite true I'm afraid, apprently McCain was still performing his preflight checks when a plane on the other side of the deck launched a rocket by mistake, this went through McCain's fuel tank and set the fuel alight. McCain managed to escape his cockpit before one of the bombs on his plane exploded, which then set off a series of explosions.

The CCTV bit is true though.

I stand corrected and thank you for the correction.

However, not wanting to be picky or anything, but the holiday has been advertised (for want of a better word) as the Jewish New Year holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

So therefore only the Jewish people should feel obliged to take it.

Mr Ellison may well have a better reason for taking today off as a holiday than the Christians, agnostics, atheists etc, but he is not Jewish, nor will he be celebrating the Jewish New Year, which was my original point.

Please don't drag down all atheists and humanists to your level. Some of us want to question why people who have religious beliefs should automatically be lifted up and have their views put on a pedestal, daring anyone to questions those views and then shouting them down as intolerant - or as americanMANUgirl put it "insane, irrational, hate-filled" and "ignorant"

The fact that you want these types of comments curtailed shows your "tolerance" is minimal to say the least. And what makes me laugh is you don't even agree with the beliefs you are standing up for!

I don't care that some of the Jewish members of congress have taken a holiday, but I will - and I believe should - question why everyone else has one too. If that offends you, then I'm sorry, but I'm going to do it anyway.

Again, how is this the low road?

He is asking why people are taking a holiday at this time.

The holiday is purely because of Judaism

Therefore he is asking why are they taking a Jewish holiday at this time.

That is all

Anything else you read into it is your own doing.

If I understand it correctly the whole point is that everyone is trying to sell and no-one wants to buy, this means that the sellers drop their price to try to entice a buyer. The more people selling - the more the price drops, as buyers have more choice and can demand more for less.

Hope that helps, in my head that made perfect sense.... ;o)
