The capital of Europe? 08:28am on 28 Sep 2009 #30. I wouldn't know, I live in Luxembourg's sphere of influence. Brussels has forgotten the south, except for when it comes to tax collection. I assume the Population of Liège, Kortrijk, Antwerp, Büllingen and Hasselt feel the same about their area.

As for getting into the North/South vendetta rubbish, no thanks. There are packs of lies stacked on other packs of lies. I'm not interested in either sides whinging.

Social democrat failure 10:23am on 08 Jun 2009 Well, 90% turnout in Belgium. Obviously a 1000 Euro fine motivates people out of bed on a Sunday morning. Despite the Socialists losing plenty of seats to the Greens (in the Walloon region) the status quo is maintained.

Got Belgium out of a pickle and is used to dealing with stubborn self interest and jingoism. Not a bad name to put forward.

Big city blues 3:14pm on 25 May 2009 I've always thought all cities/towns look the same...

Full of glass and concrete, less and less old and pretty buildings, Renault Clio's and white vans parked haphazardly on pavements/cycle lanes and a large religious building in the middle.

Despite that Half of France is full of Brits they're fiercely territorial - a bit like cats.

So beware if you are writing about a tuft of grass, the secretary of defence, separation of duties, The Star of David, a statement of demand or if you like an obscure heavy metal band of the 80's...

It's true that the very protectionist north of the county does this; I have applied for jobs in Brussels (long ago) wanting "bilingual" people. I pointed out that they didn't specify it was Flemish (not Dutch)/French. This even happens in Arlon, where you are more likely to encounter Luxembourgish or German.
I've also seen this at home, where they wanted people fluent in Urdu, Punjabi and Gujarati (in the context, it was sensible; Social worker in Bradford).
I think it's perfectly acceptable in an area where you will need to communicate in a certain language. On the other hand, I'm not convinced about the "Belgian diploma" story.
