BBC HD: Wimbledon and some Top Gear questions 08:23am on 07 Jul 2009 Why do I want Top Gear in HD?

Because some of the images/sequences the TG team manage to produce are absolutely stunning and the match of anything currently on BBC HD.

Or, to put in another way:

Gardeners World - Plants that can be grown in your very own garden - 2 million viewers - HD
Top Gear - Exotic machinery that most of us can only dream of owning - 8 million viewers - SD

Why?
Coyopa's guts 08:20am on 24 Mar 2009 I'd be interested in the bitrates selected for each channel/programme - is this information published anywhere? How were the various bit rates selected?

Also, the post infers that the bit rate might vary between programme types, e.g. 128kbps for music and 64kbps for news bulletins on the same channel. Is this the case?

Is music winning the digital war? 10:40am on 13 Oct 2008 The music industry is like Han Solo after being released from his protective carbonite cocoon - blind, bumbling and a liability to itself.

The difference is I can't see their vision returning any time soon.

With about a decade to anticipate and plan for the post-CD era, they have done nothing except treated their customers with contempt.

Look at what some small labels like Linn Records are doing - you can buy all Linn's catalogue online in varying non-DRM formats and qualities, from 320kbps MP3 through to uncompressed 24bit 48kHz studio masters, all for appropriate fees. If small outfits like Linn can manage this, why can't the recording behemoths with their (for the moment) valuable back catalogue income and associated marketing spend?
Facebook's founder - too late to cash in? 10:14am on 11 Oct 2008 If I were him I would be crying into my latte every morning. $1billion of real, 2007-vintage dollars buys a lot of pizza...and gives unlimited scope to tinker with "new ways to share information", if that's what he truly cares about.

I really hope Zuckerberg is as upbeat when the entire economy implodes and he's down to the point where he can't even afford Facebook's hefty server bill.
Mobile Music - how unlimited, how free? 10:44pm on 24 Sep 2008 Silly old me, paying 80p/track for 16bit 44.1khz uncompressed, DRM-free music that comes with a long term physical archive and even a nice box with pictures in it.

I must be mad to wait the 24-48 hours it takes for this old-fashioned CD to arrive when I can have a sub-standard, restrictive and finite version on my phone in less time for more money.

Freeserve and ten years of boom and bust 7:43pm on 22 Sep 2008 As someone who was desperately lurching between one "failed promise" to another at this time (yes, RedHotAnt, I'm talking to you!), the fact that Freeserve came and did what I and may others like me had wanted for so long was nothing short of a miracle.

Although I never used Freeserve for more than the odd bit of "tide me over" free access (their unmetered tariffs never included the ISDN I needed), I'm in no doubt that UK internet users owe them a debt of gratitude.

It's difficult to recall exactly how recalcitrant and sluggish BT and many of the other large ISPs were at this time - if anyone thinks it's bad now then you have no idea.

Once Freeserve had opened the gates it was bye-bye to £130/mo phone bills and fly-by-nights like RedHotAnt, and hello "proper" internet.

TV - looking forward and back 7:08pm on 16 Sep 2008 In a domestic situation, Hi-Vision is so out of whack with what consumers need and want (not always the same thing, remember). 1080p is already a waste compared to 720p (i.e. you can't discern the difference all those extra pixels are making) with a screen smaller than about 42" in the average UK living room, what need therefore for a even more bandwidth-hungry format?

I don't particularly care what NHK and RAI do with their money, but for obvious reasons I am concerned what the BBC thinks it should be doing mucking about with what should probably just be a university research project.

What the manufacturers, regulators and governments should be focussing on is developing modular, extensible technology to rid us of the curse of dead-end, inefficient codecs as used on most current digital platforms. Instead we get locked into a 15 year-old technology (DVB-T, DAB) that inevitably trades questionable quantity for quality and will cost us (and the environment) dear to replace in the next decade when we all want/are forced to have HD.

A bit more thought, a long-term view and some regulatory pressure and I'm sure we could have a proper platform that could give us true interactivity, efficient use of spectrum and a minimum quality standard that at the very least matches what was possible with analogue PAL. Sadly, DVB-T is miles from this, and the folly of a 20ft screen and 24 speakers shows that us poor consumers might be waiting a long time.
