Woods ready to light up Turnberry 9:54pm on 13 Jul 2009 No 4 - a great course is made up of more than just great golf holes. If you built a course with 18 great holes in the middle of Iowa then it would be a great course but lack that magical element.
Playing while looking out to Ailsa Craig or walking into town on the Old Course 18th have that special feeling that makes a great golf experience. We will see images this week from Turnberry that Muirfield can`t match and that`s just as important to promote this great game and boost the tourist industry when we need it the most
Woods ready to light up Turnberry 5:32pm on 13 Jul 2009 I`m an Ayrshire exile living in Chicago but have played the Ailsa course many times. If the wind blows then the last seven holes will be very, very tough. On the par 3 15th I have hit driver, even from the front tees !!
Walking up the 18th with the hotel sitting on the hill behind the green makes you feel like a champion, even if you are struggling to break 100.
Westwood looks to tame 'Beast' of Bethpage 5:43pm on 16 Jun 2009 Monty in his heyday had the best game suitable for the US Open, straight driving and finding greens in regulation, but like Westwood he failed to grab the opportunities when they presented themselves. This week we have the players - Stenson, Casey and Poulter - capable of doing similar but they will still have to beat The Man.

Like you I was expecting the entrance to be very grand but you could easily drive past and miss it

One question - how is the catering inside the course and do they rip you off like at the Open ?
Amen to all that 4:40pm on 06 Apr 2009 I drove past the course last month and stopped at the gates. Talked with the security guard at the front of Magnolia Drive but he wouldn`t let me venture any further. Could see glimpses of the paradise inside and it was so frustrating to be so close but so far !! I was quite surprised how this golfing mecca is situated so close to garish strip malls and fast food restaurants.

Warming the bench is a pain in the backside! 2:26pm on 05 Mar 2009 I played non-league for 20yrs and toward the end of my career was a 35-40yr old sub playing alongside lots of cocky youngsters. I kept positive and trained hard so I always felt I could contribute. When on the sideline I would be telling the others how I was going to go on and score the winner or equaliser. It was incredible how often that happened and I think having that positive attitude helped make it a reality.

My manager wanted me to stay in the squad and I believed I was the best 15-20min player at the club while knowing my best days were long behind me. It was great still to be playing, training and joking with the boys and there really is no substitute for it. Wish I could do it all again !!

Saying hello to Birkdale 5:55pm on 15 Jul 2008 Loosieloo, I`ll be watching from Chicago and wish I was with you. My plan would be to follow someone early to get round the course and then get a seat on the 18th grandstand when your group finish. At this time there should still be seats available since the stand is huge. Then relax and watch all the groups come in. It will be a long wait but once the last groups come in the atmosphere is electric and you will be glad you sat down early. Enjoy yourself
