In many European markets, the sellers are often the farmers themselves.
You can chat about the produce, recipes and whatever else & sometimes completely unexpected topics.

There is a human content and variety (not to mention fresh produce straight from the farm) which makes them a very enjoyable experience.

In US shopping malls you can be assured that everything is sterile, and even the plastic Eifel Tower or the imitation gondolas floating around the inside pond are undoubtedly disinfected several times daily.
Yes, my idea of a nightmare!

I've lived a total of 15 years in the USA and have NO desire to go back...

I've lived 13 years in a *much* larger German city. The only violence I've experienced (apart from various police-demonstrator clashes) was, once, in an Irish Pub, between two English speakers.

You vote for the European Parliament. You vote for the UK government who appoints the commissioners. Ironically, your much-despised Lisbon Treaty does make the EU more democratic and accountable.

What you don't get to vote for is the US government and President (and the Americans could well lose their minds again and elect Palin or somebody equivalent).

Yet, you are acting as agents for those whose aim is to keep the EU weak and maintain the UK in its role as the US' lapdog.

Yes, agents for a foreign power acting against the UK's best interests...

But that could also be achieved through industry standards.

Part of the hysteria about such regulation isn't due to the EU standards at all:

The notorious case of the kiwis having to be thrown away (and not even given away) because they were a few millimetres too small, is due to a 1964 UK law which sets a 5000 pound fine for selling, or even giving away, undersized fruit.
Please note that 1964 was long before the UK joined the EC.
This over-enthusiasm to enforce regulations is wholly British and seems to parallel the mentality which put CCT on every corner.

The farmers markets in Germany, where I live, have all sorts of weirdly shaped and sized fruit and vegetables.
In some cases there might be "Kl. II" or "Kl. III" on the price card, but I've certainly never seen someone going around measuring the fruit!

As already mentioned, they weren't from Afghanistan and, several at least, had engineering degrees from Germany... Not exactly unsophisticated (whatever one may think of engineers).

RE Going back to the US:
I am half American (white BTW) living in Germany.
My own US experience was being beaten in school for being a "foreigner".
I don't think I'll ever go back for more than a visit.
An end to "victimhood"? 3:53pm on 08 Nov 2008 I thought several of the "nutty-wing" posters here had said that, in the event of an Obama victory, they would take off for the mountains with their guns and a supply of food.

Evidently they are all still around.

It's never too late to take off for an extended camping trip, just please be careful not to mistake any hikers for "liberal government thought police" and shoot them...
