'any notable endeavor or venture regarded as a competition'

I have to agree with Brian de Barra above though - what more could Zidane have done to be put up there, if not alongside the incomparable Pele, certainly alongside Schiaffino, Cruyff & Maradona?

France were (and patently still are) a poor team since around 2001. Yet whenever Zidane played he lifted them to great things. His virtuoso display v Brazil in 2006 WC QF made a mockery of the hype over Ronaldinho, similarly his masterclass against Portugal outshining Cristiano Ronaldo in the semi-final.

Zidane played two full world cups (injury denied him an effective 2002). France reached both finals. Its an impact easily parallel to Pele & Maradona.

I think what is needed is more time - let some nostalgia kick in. Pele had many bad games too, but we don't remember them any more and rightly so. Now we look back and see a near perfect player and bemoan the physicality of today's game. Watch Brazil v Portugal in 1966, and that's real physicality!! The skill level is as high as ever today.

1) Roy Keane - desperate to still matter, this might be the last time anyone outside of Ipswich ever listens to him....

2) Liverpool - staggeringly rubbish. Will finish 5th. Klinsmann to take over next June.

3) Thierry Henry - ban him for three games i.e. France's entire World Cup campaign.

4) Georgie Thompson - perfection.

5) Erik Edman - is an anagram of meek nadir. Spooky, I think you'll agree.

France, not Ferguson's successor, should be Blanc's future 04:22am on 18 Nov 2009 I think I would hold back on statements such as Blanc being the best young coach in Europe outside Guardiola - at least until he's achieved something in European competition (i.e. at least a CL semi-final).

Didier Deschamps (still only 41) took Monaco (a much smaller club in terms of fanbase than Bordeaux) to a CL final just 5 years ago. Mourinho (just 46) took FC Porto, from a much smaller league than France, to victory in the same final. Roberto Mancini is 45 and has a 3 Italian titles to his name - surely a FAR greater achievement than one French title??

I don't think United would take on a manager who hasn't taken a side to at least the last 4 of the CL. Winning a league title isn't enough in itself.

WHY?!

Surely PL clubs should buy players on merit and not past reputation? Why should this perfectly nice (and for a long nicely rewarded) player get a chance at Arsenal or Spurs over millions of youngsters from across the world?

Seems to me that a little more effort and a little less tweeting might be the order of the day. Or perhaps its just that every manager he's ever had has been wrong and Adu right...
Safin says goodbye 12:06pm on 12 Nov 2009 I think he fulfilled his potential. Yes, he was technically good enough to win more Grand Slams, but mentally he wasn't - in fact, in some ways it was remarkable he held it all together to even win the two he did.

So, all in all, a great career, and a particularly important one in that gap between the Sampras/Agassi and Federer/Nadal eras when men's tennis seemed pretty empty.
Can Blazevic work his magic for Bosnia? 2:18pm on 10 Nov 2009 May well be that this Bosnian team is a real dark horse for the next world cup, if the excellent management structure Blazevic has put in place is carried on - might just be a step to far for them to beat Portugal over 2 legs right now, but most of their finest players are strikingly young.

No offence to Portugal (we all know it was not their connections that led to the disgraceful seeding decision for the play-offs), but I wish Bosnia, Ireland, Slovenia and Ukraine all the luck (and fair refereeing) in the world!!
