The two sides of Lionel Messi 6:17pm on 02 Nov 2009 I suspect Messi does not have as much confidence playing for the Argentinian senior team as he had playing for the U-20 and Olympic teams, and for Barcelona.

In the junior teams he was the 'undoubted' star and got star treatment. He also gets star treatment at Barcelona. I bet in the senior team, this is not the case.

South American / African senior teams are complex; junior players no matter their skills cannot experience the same type of reception Rooney gets in the England team.

Recently a pundit wrote - 'no Rooney, no world cup success for England'. IMO it would be hard to imagine an Argentinian journalist write 'no Messi no world cup victory'.

My point is the dynamics of the team - the authoritative presence of senior players and a coach who will not give Messi star treatment - affects his performance.

In a nutshell, its a motivational thing, not the personal motivation of playing for your country, but the additional motivation that comes from being made to feel special.

Ask Veron how he felt at ManU not being the 'boss' dictating play.
Two worlds collide at Arsenal AGM 2:07pm on 23 Oct 2009 Gordon can't quite work Arsena out - I wonder what it is Gordon is struggling with? Is it Wenger as usual? Seems to me all the etonian palls in the club and the modernist whose combination is giving this journalist migraine headaches, are all crusing on starship Arsene!

So Gordon, what makes Arsenal tick is Arsene. Repeat - what makes Arsenal tick is Arsene. Its not beer - he threw that out the window long ago. As a comparison ManU has an old guard married to the modernist business acumen of the Glazers. I suppose this also puzzles Gordon.

How long will the Corinthian values and modern thinking last - I don't know, but I do know this, it will last as long as Arsene is there. There are so many institutions with this formula - the monarcy, wimbledon, oxford university - it is laughable to see it as unworkable.

Its all about the visionary who holds the aces... in Arsenal, its Arsene!
The day Lee Dixon took the tube to Highbury 3:32pm on 22 Oct 2009 I must agree that this is a great blog about Arsene with a churlish title. Perhaps it continues to reflect the deep set fear in the media to give this genius of a manager the full accolade he deserves.

Why is this so? Well he is French, refused to bow to the pressure to play English players at all cost, and has rubbed the noses of so many English managers in the dust with his scintillating football.

Thus a huge formidable segment of the English media persistently downplay Arsene's greatness. They are quick to point to his lack of a Champion's League trophy as a marker that he is not a 'great'.

They are quick to use SAF as the yardstick by which to judge whether Wenger is great or not. The same media however agrees that Bobby Robson was great though he never won the Champs League or World Cup.

When the true uncensored story is written about Arsene's managerial career in the premier league, it will be clear that he is the greatest manager of this era despite all what SAF has won with ManU.

This is an individual whose arrival to these shores has transformed every aspect of football in England. A couple of managers in England have won the Champs League, only Arsene went a season unbeaten.

Only Arsene has the possibility of repeating that feat again. The magnitude of that achievement threatened to wipe ManU's legacy off the map, they couldn't have it, animosities went over the roof.

The current team will win trophies be it this season, next season or the season after and will do it with a graceful style. The style that has endeared Arsene and Arsenal to a global discerning audience.

Happy birthday 'Le Professeur'; thank you for giving me unforgetable magical moments on the field; please don't stop doing it even if the Arsenal board kicks you out for 'not winning trophies'.
England cannot replace Rooney 6:46pm on 13 Oct 2009 When do we get good tactical analysis rather than the weekly 'i think player so-and-so is mercurial', 'player so-and-so is outstanding'?

The team England has with or without Rooney is at best a semi-final squad. IMO, this team is not better than the 1990 team. Gazza was a much greater talent than Rooney would ever be...

I am a realist and you heard from me first, England will not win the world cup. Rooney is not good enough to win it for England like Ronaldo and Zidane did for Brazil and France respectively.

Is it a sacrilege making this type of statement? No! Arshavin cannot win it for Russia, Ronaldo cannot win it for Portugal. It is going to be Kaka's world cup in a final against Spain - I said it first...

I have the tactical analysis to back up my points and would be more than happy to discuss that with any other blogger...
Ferdinand must sharpen up 1:30pm on 11 Oct 2009 Phil, many on this blog have honestly opined that Terry's pace is an issue. If you don't see that, ok, but it doesn't do away with the facts. A defender can be slow and get the job done depending on the opposition and what he can get away with...

In the premiership players get away with 'meaty' challenges not allowed at the world cup - you know this for a fact. In Ukraine, Terry performed well, nothing outstanding. Portugal, Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil are all better than Ukraine.

Admiration of a player's courage, should not detract from his shortcomings, and the needed tactical analysis required to remedy the effects of the player's shortcomings. England's defence is a concern, the best teams will expose this...
Ferdinand must sharpen up 12:44pm on 11 Oct 2009 Phil, glad to see you have finally caught up with what some like myself saw a while back - England' weak link is the defence. I am sure you remember the posting your moderators sat on for days because it stated this obvious point quite clearly...

The press would now go into overdrive on Rio's mistakes and continue harping on about James. Unfortunately there are no replacements yet. The solution has to be tactical - get a deep lying midfielder, hope Capello is listening or you can make him hear this...

In my opinion, note strictly my opinion, your 'outstanding' Terry without a deep tough tackling midfielder would also be left exposed at the world cup. He has heart but has no pace and would be brutally exposed in South Africa by the fast teams.

He had the best of Torres recently but in the world cup there is no room for 'meaty' tackles, the likes of Torres will take him to the cleaners. I am no prophet of doom just a realist who does not buy into media propaganda. Capello needs a deep midfielder.

Either Frank or Gerrard would need make room for possibly Barry...

Man City challenge is no fake 2:16pm on 06 Oct 2009 A team is as good as the squad and the MANAGER. In the premiership, Wenger has proved a better manager than Benitez and Hughes. However the press resolutely refuse to give him the awesome respect he deserves. That is why every year the press predicts that Arsenal won't get into the top four, and every year the press gets it wrong.

Arsenal does not have the squad to win the league, but only ManU and Chelsea have a better squad in terms of all round quality. Arsenal have the smartest manager in the league, didn't say the most successful, SAF is. There is no sound and logical reason why Arsenal will not be in the top four at the end of the season other than prejudice.

If you know what it means to dribble, you'd know Rooney can't dribble. He makes good use of space, this means he gets into good positions; he use his strength to charge through defenders and knows when to pass so does not needlessly lose the ball like Nani...

Rooney can't lead the line so he can't play as top 9 that's why he needs a big lump like Heskey in the national team. Rooney has NEVER taken a game by the scruff of the neck - if he has pls simply tell me which one. Don't abuse me just tell me the game he took command of.

If not for the fear of complete ridicule, some would have already started campaigning for Rooney as FIFA player of the year; but wait Ronaldo is still banging in goals for fun; Messi and Kaka are still as captivating as ever, so lets limit it to the premiership.

In the 18-yard box, when space is tight, Drogba is go to guy. When it comes to taking on a defender one-on-one and showing them the grass Torres is unparalled. Rooney is a box of energy, the beloved box to box type English workhorse who knows where the goal is...

Can Rooney dribble? NO! Can he lead the line? NO! Can he take a game by the scruff of the neck and turn it around? NO! Who has done all of this either at Club level or for their national team amongst the three - Torres. He is the best. So spare us the propanganda...
