I don't understand what is going on here, and why this fiasco is being reported solely as the fault of the banks concerned.

This matter erupted in September last year - when it did so, it was widely reported by the BBC and the supine press that Brown was actively encouraging the deal to go ahead. It was being said that with the involvement of the Trasury and the FSA, the merger could not fail.

If the banks were in such a parless state as you describe, why didn't Brown and co take action to prop them up at the time, instead of waiting for them to collapse?

I suspect it was Brown's intention all along to nationalise the banks, but he waited for this crash to ensure he could obtain the necessary shares at a rock-bottom price.

What is a billion, and what is a trillion

When I was in school,

a British billion was a million million (10^12)and there didn't seem to be a trillion.

It appears that the Americans use a billion for a thousand million (10^9), and a trillion seems to be the old British billion - a million million (10^12), or a thousand billion.

I am a Chartered Engineer, and the SI units give 10^6 as mega (M), 10^9 as giga (G), 10^12 as tera (T).

Can anyone enlighten me, please.

It must be very frustrating for you to see your blog, which started as a torpedo aimed at David Cameron, being diverted by the contributors in the general direction of Bottler Brown and his country-destroying activities with the economy.

You must get out of the Westminster village and listen to the real people at large to understand what they think, instead of regurgitating so enthusiastically what you are being fed by Brown's entourage.

A summit stock-take 5:12pm on 09 Jul 2008 My wife and I spent today looking after our 8-year-old grandson who is off school, ill.

I happened to look in on him watching CBBC at lunch-time, when he asked me to pass him the tv controller so that he could turn the programme off, with the words 'look at that food being wasted - African children could eat that'. At least there is a message getting through to them by us, as grandparents, when we ask our grandchildren to finish their meals.

He was right, the waste of food (baked beans as it happens) was horrendous. The food being wasted there could have fed a whole African township for a fortnight.

Now, BBC, get off your high horses, and practice what you have been trying to preach in Bottler's propaganda about food wastage.

How can you expect to be taken seriously when you see fit to present that as childrens' entertainment.
