Clearly the Oil, Lies etc prog, despite it's anodyne approach, is terrifying Unionists like yourself.

Rough business 12:16pm on 06 Jun 2008 No 3: mysteriousRiverclyde Absolutely right. the programme FMQs is far too short. There should be a preamble, FMQs then a reasonable post FMQs analysis, 60 minutes minimum.

Slaintemha's question : which of the oil industry spokespeople is in the pay of the SNP saying at present rates of consumption there is not 15 years, 30 years but a minimum of 75+ years oil production in the Scottish sector? also deserves an answer and discussion.

Anyone with half an eye can see the BBC would rather discuss Mrs McGinty's washing than the real political issues of the day.

Last night Scotland's so called national news led with a murder hunt on one station and on at least one other station, with two murder hunts.

Murder is painful for those concerned but it does not deserve pride of place on a nation's national news.
Reserve strength 11:55am on 05 Jun 2008 The BBC's Oil prog was like lancing a boil....painful now but a 100 times more painful and damaging if allowed to fester.

Producing Haley with her little girl at the fair approach was the BBC's attempt at taking the sting out of one of the SNP's most dangerous weapons.

Unfortunately for the Unionists it only served to give further credence to the SNP's argument.

Every programme, no matter how lightly approached, 'jolly hockey sticks, alls well in the garden who needs Oil and Independence anyway', simply re-enforces the idea that Oil is like gold.

That this 'gold' belongs to Scotland, that Scotland has been lied to for decades, cheated for decades and that the only way Scots will see the benefits from Oil is through Independence.

Personally I hope Brown doesn't give us an extra farthing of Oil between now and the referendum (I say extra!!!! a farthing would have been something!!!!).

We can repay him and past UK PMs for all their kindnesses at the ballot box.

I've just had a flash: Gordon standing for Holyrood in 2011 to rally the Labour Party and re-shape it for a post Independent Scotland following a yes vote in 2010.....Mr Cameron having already taken on his mantle at Westminster.....you heard it here first!!!
Reserve strength 01:41am on 05 Jun 2008 Forget the statistics, they are worthless, listen to the politicians and movers and shakers of the period re the importance of Scottish Oil to the BRITISH economy.

Tony Benn quite honestly tells us Oil was of prime importance to Britain which was almost bankrupt after the OPEC Oil price hike of 1973 which led to the winter of discontent. Oil got the UK out of serious financial difficulties. So much for England subsidising Scotland.

(Those of us who knew London in the 60's and 70's will tell you of the transformation there since the Oil revenues began to flow into the London treasury).

Even that arch English nationalist Sir Bernard Ingham spoke quite eloquently about how Oil save the UK economy in the 70's and of how the UK couldn't get the Oil out of the ground quick enough.

Then with eyes bulging he accuses the Scots of being greedy, selfish, uncaring etc because they have the audacity to demand the money from their own natural resource, a resource that has been clearly subsiding the UK (English) economy for 3 decades.

His performance was straight out of some second rate vaudeville act.

This is just the beginning of the truth about Scottish Oil reserves. The facts will soon be so glaringly obvious that even Scottish Unionist apologists like Brian Taylor will have difficulty trying to shore up the Unionist cause.

Would Scotland be better off as an Independent state? Do me a favour!! Would any of us be better off winning £50 million on the lottery?

Oh I see, you're going to wait until after tonights BBC programme on Oil before launching your piece on the growing value of Oil, the fact that it has decades to run, the fact that Oil is as likely to sit around $150 a barrel than drop below $100 and that all of this will inevitably shape the thinking of voters in Scotland re Independence.

A major shot in the arm for the SNP wouldn't you say and two fingers to the Unionists who have lied to us for 3 decades about Oil.
Making the case 01:42am on 03 Jun 2008 On the Politics Show Darling argued that while Oil revenues might go up other tax revenues in England are likely to go down therefore we have to view the UK as a whole and distribute the taxes accordingly.

He might not realise it but he is effectively saying Scottish Oil revenues are subsiding England's falling taxes.

We've known that for decades of course but it's nice to see him finally admit it.

Also, if the UK can barely afford the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan now, presumably after Independence (and the loss of Oil revenues et al) they would have to pull their troops out for lack of funds?

Here we go again 11:28am on 30 May 2008 daviecooper1, the Oil companies do not own the Oil which they drill, nor do they own the sector of the North Sea they are allowed to drill in.

The North Sea is divided into small sectors. Oil companies then seek exploration licenses (more money to the London treasury).

Having discovered Oil they are then licensed to drill and are taxed on their profits like any other company on land.

Yes the Oil will run out but that's all the more reason to prudently build an Oil fund like the Norwegians for the day when Oil does run out.

Apparently Norway is now earning as much in interest these days from its Oil fund than it does in taxes from the Oil itself.

Can you honestly say Scotland has gained as much from her Oil, with zero pounds in an Oil fund and 1 in 5 children still living in poverty in Labour controlled Glasgow?

Perhaps you just don't think Scots are as capable as running Scotland as they were when they ran much of the British Empire?

It's a hard truth for unionists to bear dc1 but we have been done.

It's time to stand up and be counted.
Here we go again 02:48am on 30 May 2008 Apart from the fact that the voters greatly appreciate the efforts of this SNP Government there are two more substantial reasons why Scotland will vote YES in the Independence Referendum.

The first is the continuing rise in the price of Oil. A rise not based on some 'fixable' short term problem a la 1970's but on the growing demand for Oil caused by the industrialisation of China and India.

This will not stop, it will increase the demands on a diminishing resource, this in turn will force the price ever upwards despite short term efforts to lower it.

Scotland can either sit back and watch the cash from its best natural resource flow to London in even greater amounts than before or it will say enough is enough, thank you but we will take it from here.

The second reason is beginning to unfold as we speak. It's the sorry state of a country which has consistently produced 10 times its own consumption of Oil based products for 30 years and still has 1 in 5 children in Glasgow living in poverty, more deprived areas throughout Scotland than you can shake a stick at and an infrastructure not fit for purpose in the 21st century.

Millions of words will be spoken and written between now and the referendum about the state of Scotland after Oil and Gas compared to Norway who discovered their Oil and Gas around the same time as we did.

And some of the most important of these words will concern the deliberate deceit of the Unionist parties to hide the truth about Scotland's wealth for 30 years.

The McCrone Report will be spoken of loud and often. By the time people vote they will have seen the SNP in action for 3 years and be conversant with facts which have been kept from them by Labour, Tory and Liberal politicians for 30 years. They won't like what they hear and they will vote accordingly.

That's what we call politics. It's what the SNP is doing and it's what Gordon Brown did last year when he decided against a General Electiion in the face of Labour's plummeting Poll results.

It could also be called COMMON SENSE.

Brian I have advocated for years the use of TV in all sport but particularly football.

United were robbed against Rangers. They weren't the first and they won't be the last. I have no doubt that it is Celtic and Rangers who are blocking moves for the use of cameras.

Having said that, even as a very non Ger I hope they win the UEFA Cup for themselves, for Glasgow and for Scotland.
Calculation and fear 11:44am on 05 May 2008 I've just read Wendy's brother's piece on this website. Apparently Wendy and the Labour party have been in favour of a referendum all along.

Any more spin from Labour and we will all be thinking that it is they who have been arguing for an Independence Referendum and the SNP who have been running scared of one.

The scary thing is, these people actually believe what they are saying!!!
