I suppose Obama can stay "calm" since all his supporters are doing the mud slinging for him.

Yes Palin is very conservative, but I don't think she is the neo-conservative you are painting her to be.

Yes Palin isn't as experienced in foreign policy as Obama/Biden, but since when were VP the ones that make the foreign policy decisions?

I think it is really disgusting how people so easily say McCain is one foot in the grave and the VP "may" have to step up after day one. That is extremely disrespectful and I'm saying this as a 20 year old, not some oldie defending other oldies. His mother is in her 90s and still active, so what is it with this? Crazy. I thought age, race, gender, and religion (and under Obama, health) cannot be discriminated when applying for a job. Why are you democrats always bringing up age and race into the argument?

As for Palin, she DOES have more experience in an Executive role. She DOESN'T have more of the Washington experience or time around political advisers like Obama has.

95% of Americans don't really have a grasp on foreign issues is has enough of it own issues. I know this as an American who's been living in Europe for 6 years. Obama obviously has an advantage of the "outsiders" view living in a multi-cultural family and also abroad in Indonesia. So yes, he naturally "gets" world issues better than her but 1) many Americans want people that understand them and been one of them, and 2) many Americans want to be America not some copy of other nations.

Great, he has a bunch of ideas to makes us socialistic (albeit repackage because if called what it is, people would be repelled to the idea) and even a more fiscally wasteful nation. Well I don't buy it. We need less bloat not more. The reason we are in this financial mess is because our system got bloated and complicated with all these twists and turns that nobody knew what was going on until after the bomb blew up. The federal government was never meant to be "big". The national government is in fat shambles and Bush also to blame. The point is we don't need our money reprocessed (pay taxes and government gives) if people learnt to watch for themselves. I don't want a nanny all my life. SORRY.
Wall Street blues 12:40pm on 15 Oct 2008 I don't the laymen of Wall Street should get the blame. The are just a tool for people to gamble their money. Anyone who does put their money into stock and doesn't know that they're gambling/risking losing their money shouldn't have money. It's common sense.

I disagree. It like saying because there was boys around the girl couldn't say no. People should understand the obvious: Credit is money lent to you, it not your money.

I agree regulations should better in place for those who lack brains, or "fools" as the others say. BUT.... I don't think everyone who foreclosed their house where "fools", even if they are calling themselves "fools" right now.

People need to learn to be responsible and live within their means.

Only one group of people I have pity for and that is pensioners. They've put their money it hedgefunds and others expecting them to make secure, steady money for them when the no longer work. But instead these "safe" investors are caught with their hands in the fast-money cookie jar.

Of course, I don't think people should retire from all work activity, but that is besides point.

The military and veterans have made huge contributions to your freedom. A nation needs to not only defend itself when attacked, but also show that they can and will defend themselves.

Specifically,
Vietnam might seem as a failure, but if allowed become communist freely, no doubt there would be much more communist nations in south east Asia and elsewhere.

Iraq is not a failure, and in fact this war should of been fought in 1991, but wasn't dealt with. Hussain was using chemical warfare and had other major weapon in stock (read: I have family/friends that were in the first Gulf War). To say that WMDs never existed is wrong. Only the sand can tell us how much was buried. (Now that a brilliant idea for old Iraq: bury the WMD so the invasion looks illegitimate)

Both of those wars involved defends people natural and democratic rights. Nice for us to complain about the wars in our comfy chairs, but I think it is worth saving people from torture and death. Do you?

But back to the issue. You have your freedom not because America is immortal and at the whisper of the word freedom all enemies are gone. No, your freedom is protect by a military that defends freedom.

I have a lot of agreement with you. I'm also have conservative views, but the people who are supposedly conservative in our government have been terribly liberal with others money.

I say people buy their chickens and let Wall Street collapse. It's basically gambling (according to a broker I knew) and why should I support a gambler? Same with the banks. Handing out money they don't have. Especially the central banks, who print banknotes and the rate they feel like. How do you think they "freed up" $300 billion here and there?

The Fed should be dropped and a public transparent government institution should be our money manager. That private company, the Federal Reserve, is just reshuffling money so their benefactors have more in the end.

As far as healthcare, I don't like the having universal insurance. I'm currently living in Europe (continental) and healthcare doesn't have the "care" part. Any government insurance will just raise our taxes and won't give us as good service. (you can to see a exceptional difference between the hospital that you get government-covered insurance and the hospitals that you must pay for)

The solution is keep the system in place and fix the legal system. The reasons why costs are high is because they have to cover expensive malpractice insurance because idiots can sue for millions of dollars. If you cap the money people can squeeze from doctors who mess up, that will reduce real costs.

Also, doctors charge a lot because they know that individual's insurance will pay it. As always with money problems, somebody is greedy.
Map of the week: Global wealth 3:53pm on 29 Sep 2008 I think the 2015 map is much to generous on the US. Our (I'm American) economy is collapsing as if we've got hit by a 8.0 financial earthquake.

We also might have a knock on effect to China if we stop buying from them.
Student politics 7:57pm on 27 Sep 2008 I think McCain has already shown how much "honour" he has. Very much.

He respects the fact he is a Senator that has a job to be done. If he's willing to pause his campaign to help solve our economic woes, he a good servant to the public nation.

Debates are relatively nothing. A showpiece for people lazy at looking into issues differences. I like debates, but I more like a man doing the job he already has.

Besides, according to your "honour", he must have some since he did show up for the debate.

I think politicians ought to finish what they started. That is one of the failures of politics: not doing/finishing their promises.

As an African brother of mine just said earlier today: Politicians campaign problems and how the can solve them, but when they're in, they don't solve them because they need to leave problems for the next campaign to shout about.

I think the war in Iraq has a finish line (economics permitting) when the next presidential term. Over half of Iraq is completely in Iraqi military/police control and further handovers are happening soon (November to March). No, we aren't going to accomplish utopia in Iraq, but if we can hand all duties to Iraqi military while keeping stability and democracy alive and healthy, that is absolute victory. No, we can't blanket out all terrorist attacks, but we can have victory if the world's citizens aren't afraid to travel. The last thing we need is a president who will give up due to popular opinion.

On topic,
I'm glad my peers care about the leadership of our nation. Surely this is an all-time high for youth participation. This also me first election to be able to participate in.

All I can say is (as the article points out) just because you're young, you don't necessarily need to be voting for Obama. For me, I was brought up to respect people who have experienced and successfully dealt with problems. Of course Obama tickles my ears on certain issues and for his superior charisma, but he hasn't used the power he has been given (his non-voting record) where he is now, what make me believe he is more than a mouthpiece for parties hard-core? We Americans don't vote in a Party as our leadership, but an Individual. Obama needs to get more experience under his belt before he gets my vote. I'd vote for Ron Paul before I vote for him.

Americans need to appreciate those who've made us the people we are for the good.

We are all created equal, and those who think otherwise are very little now. This election has broken the race and gender barriers as the man has said. Women and non-Caucasians are now not just being let in for "equal-opportunity", but of their merits.

I feel that letting in a minority just because they are minority is a form of discrimination. Luckily, it not about that and hasn't about that in this election.

So the man is right: Black rights (and women too) have already been championed. Now we need to fight the divide of wealth. I hope America has not lost it's love for "middle class". It's one thing that been fight for since the beginning of our country.

But as the golden rule say: "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer." It a difficult battle to defeat that, but it is possible and good for society. One thing I think is a must is requiring relevant Economics education in our High School (British Secondary School). Teaching soon-to-be-adults the basics at least will help many who are struggling. You'd be amazed how many people don't know how to do a simple monthly budget. Accounting and other general responsibilities needs to be done if people don't want to live "paycheck to paycheck".

Maybe the problem with you Europeans and city dwellers (and I live in Europe and in a city) is that you guys don't have any wildlife around. Just birds, zoos, and wildlife reservations (which is really wild life).

A human soul is in a completely different dimension than the animal. I'm not surprised since the past 150 years we've been taught in Evolution class we're just animals.

Thats a lie. And do worry if it does become a problem. Nature can easily balance us out. We are already dying millions AND people get to enjoy a life here on earth TOO. Better than millions dying (50 something million in America) and NOT getting to enjoy a life here on earth.

It always cracks me up that people talk about over population never do any personal about it. All talk, no action. Just an excuse I say.

Thanks for the great read. Disregard the belligerent comments of people your particular post doesn't represent. I appreciate you interviewing people and going to place that are unique and interest but don't normally find themselves in the spotlight. I'm sure you'll find non-whites, ranchers, family farmers, city workers, etc. to talk to. I'll enjoy it as it comes.

To those who don't like: If a particular post that is too "red" for you, you'll find many blog post in "blue" by visiting "Justin Webb's America".

I agree with Ben Traywick. Media has belittled our military during these past wars. Then the politicians jump on the bandwagon to ride the movement generated and hope to get up on top.

I noted the biased BBC video (note I don't mind that it's biased- we all are) interviewing US troops which were all demoralized ("i feel this a complete waste of time"). Now, why would voluntary personnel be demoralized that this point of time (we've made great progress recently)? My personal fear is it is the lambasting of media indirectly affecting the military's moral. Besides hearing and reading all the negative "Left" propaganda while abroad, they are greeted with coldness from most people which have been affect by media.

I'm glad (I know it sound odd on a British site) that we didn't have this kind of deriding during our Independence war. We would've never recovered from the media criticizing us about dressing up Indian at the Boston Tea Party.

As a center-right on certain issues, I don't want my country with a commander-in-chief (military position that is) which otherwise never be in any kind of military leadership. No, you don't have to blood loving war-monger to be in the military. But I can't imagine Barrack going far up the chain of command if he was in the military.

Totally off-topic: What up with the Bush Doctrine thing? Nobody except those in DC knew what it was and the media expected Palin not to be dumbfounded. If we could go back 24 hours before the ABC interview, 98% of media wouldn't know what the Bush Doctrine is. The mere phrase sounds like it comes from the left. And from what I understand of it, these types of policies have been running around for decades, not just the Bush years.

Everybody likes to shoot the Lame Duck. Bush was the best choice we got, more than Kerry or Gore. End of. I don't see myself whining about I-can't-keep-my-zipper-up Clinton. If it was about voting for the perfect candidate, I'd either never vote or would very quickly find out he/she isn't the ideal/perfect candidate to represent me.
