What one looks for in the first few pages of a script are plausible characters, an interesting situation in the psychological sense rather than an underwater lighthouse, an early indication of what the story is going to be, and as many laughs as possible, generated from character and situation rather than random jokes.

Conflict can mean argument, but in essence it means different approaches to any given issue. So if two people are in a restaurant, one might know exactly what they want to eat, whereas another might be indecisive, and they would therefore irritate one another. For example.

While I love a good conspiracy theory, the reason this blog exists is that I asked the writersroom if they could accommodate it on their site. So it's not designed to rule out controversy. When we launched the college it was a bit lively round here, and reminiscent of the old days, but there are other places in cyberspace where bile is on the menu. Nice to be nostalgic , though.

Glad to know how things turned out for Marc Peirson. I've often wondered what became of him and his obsession with script editors who live in west London.

I'm so pleased that you discovered the blog, and thank you very much for contributing. It's great to have established a family tradition, and the whole project is really special.

I've worked with a few well-known actors who have dyslexia, and I know what a struggle it is for them, so it must have been particularly special for Charlie to discover that he could write plays despite the problem.

Yes, the aims of the Scene and Heard scheme are boosting self-esteem and making children feel they have somethng to offer rather than writing aims, and in that sense the writing is a by-product.

This year's College of Comedy writers 10:04am on 25 Jun 2009 I'm afraid the post above breaks the house rules, which forbid the use of personal e-mail addresses on blogs. Please note for future reference.
This year's College of Comedy writers 12:09pm on 19 Jun 2009 Funland was a single-camera show, and thus used film format. Two Pints is a studio audience show, so that script would be in audience format with a wide left margin used for specifying which shots are on which camera. Film format is fine for submitting scripts of either kind. I hope your script prospers.

I'm sorry you didn't get an encouraging email this time. The material is considered as a whole,on its merits, and the shortlist encompasses a variety of styles, as was the case with the successful writers last year. There is no check list, and no focus group. The criteria are: is it funny, is it exciting, and does it speak with an original voice?
College of Comedy update 3:06pm on 18 May 2009 This has been a very mixed day of telling people that we'd like to meet them (happiness) or that they just missed out (sadness). Though one of the good news group hadn't been answering his phone because his wife had been having a baby, so that felt extremely good.
