Britain's cycling success - is it cricket? 10:20am on 19 Aug 2008 To all those complaining that this piece has been written by someone employed by, and published by, the BBC - it's an opinion piece. On a blog. It's designed to stir up responses, spark a debate, etc. If you can't handle being shown a differing opinion, or even a question, once in a while, can I suggest you simply stop reading the blogs?

Or, alternatively, you could actually read the blog, rather than just the headline. Let's see:

"I'll never tire of hearing the national anthem at an Olympic venue"

"I'll be back there on Tuesday, hoping to hear that anthem another three times".

Mmm. The author is definitely ashamed of our success. Perhaps we should sack him for being insufficiently jingoistic?

As for people ranting about IQ scores - you clearly have too high an expectation of the average BBC blogs reader! At least no-one's mentioned Hitler... yet...

Capturing the youth market 6:05pm on 14 Aug 2008 I'm not sure if I qualify to give my opinion here (I'm 22... is that still young?), but I do know that if there was one way to put me off watching the games it would be by patronising me with a "Youth games" all of my own, because I'm not old enough to understand the big people's games.

Besides that, as someone has pointed out... surely 46 is roughly the correct average age for people watching the games? Especially bearing in the mind the bias created by retired over-65s watching large amounts of the games all day.

I would also agree with the previous comment that putting more of the best sports on, regardless of whether there is a decent Brit competing there or not, would make me more willing to watch.

Most bloggers at the BBC seem to have missed this major part of the definition of "blog" when they write their op-ed pieces.

Extra credit for even responding to some of the obviously trolling comments - but do remember that just because they lower the level of debate to challenging you to IQ competitions, you don't have to drop yourself to their level by suggesting races. Perhaps it was supposed to be a joke, but seeing as they didn't get the jokes in your article it didn't seem like a good idea.
How cool is Cuil? 11:39am on 01 Aug 2008 As with most people, I tried various searches for websites I knew existed and got absolute rubbish back. Seems Cuil doesn't read headers/titles/even web page addresses before looking through the text of a page.

For those impressed with Cuil's ability to find academic papers etc, have you tried Google Scholar? I usually find it throws up some good results. And if you tell it what university you're at (though some might have privacy concerns with this) it will send you straight to where you can access the paper online.

Being under the age of 30 and no expert on Chinese literature, I don't get all the references but the animation is fantastic (as you would expect from the Gorrillaz people) and I had fun spotting the various different sports incorporated into it.

As for those complaining about the lack of "British symbols" - the London olympics are in 2012, not 2008. It's totally appropriate to have host country themed introductions on the BBC.
Hands on with iPhone 3G 12:35pm on 10 Jun 2008 Presumably the people complaining about the amount of coverage given to the iphone are the same whose response to the launching of the original ipod was "its only a little bit better than the competition, it's not going to change the world"??

Like it or not, Apple have a history of producing devices which change the way people live/work. The BBC should therefore be giving as much coverage as possible to any new product launch that takes place; its readers want to know what everyone is going to be using (either in Apple version or a product made by another company but strongly influenced by Apple) in five years time.

Incidentally, from 7pm last night to 5am this morning, the most read story on the ENTIRE BBC news website was the one on the launch of the iphone, which suggests that readers are actually interested and want to know about it.

Essentially, the regime that changed the name to Myanmar is one that is not recognized as a legitimate government, and cannot therefore make legitimate decisions on the name of the country. Burma is preferred by the remaining elements of the democratic movement in the country.
