• Should Darling back Lloyds' rights issue? 11:33am on 08 Oct 2009 There is some heroic and muddled thinking at Lloyds; not surprising for the bank that thought buying HBOS was a coup.
  
  All this get out of APS is designed to get EU off its back - which it won't achieve.
  
  They do have some very strange management there.
• Tories bash the rich 3:14pm on 06 Oct 2009 Come on Robert, the marxist in you is just itching to get out along with the many comments on here about how awful and rich tories are.
  
  less on the reality of how to fix a structural deficit of £90 billion. To fill the hole would be to say, close the NHS. it is a big ask, at least the Tories and Lib Dems too are saying things along the right lines.
  
  Labour are trying to set the economic conditions up for the Tories to fail; I happen to think they may well succeed. Cameron might well be an Obama, overwhelmed by the disaster created before he took the job.
• Labour bets on bashing bankers 11:29am on 28 Sep 2009 This is such a massive distraction by the powers that be. Real questions of policy need deciding. but instead it is this pure populist nonsense. The bankers who caused the problems are nearly all out of work, except those at the bankof england and the treasury.
• The real G20 breakthrough 10:37am on 07 Sep 2009 I don't think this will hold though, see here. The politics is way to complex for this financial puzzle to be sovled so easily. None of Japan, France or Germany are really going to accept this level of pain when the US and UK will seemingly get off scot-free.
  
  Once the furore of the G20 dies down, so will this idea. Something will get done, but it won't look like this dea.
• Barclays: Even the bad times are good 09:28am on 03 Aug 2009 Well, I have changed my mind. Many poeple thought Barlcays reliance on tax schemes run by Roger Jenkins was going to hoel them eventually, in the end, byt relying on this instead of mortgages and the property market they have come out on top.
  
  Even better, they lost out on ABN Amro and instead were able to pick up Lehman Brothers.

• Has the City learned anything? 10:40am on 14 Jul 2009 It is quite likley that L&G or Aviva will be another target. Despite Robert's correct criticism that this is taking shareholders for mugs, the fact remains FP is too small to survive going forward and has been trying to sell itself for ages.
  As for beating guilts, with the economy today seen in deflation maybe that is a good thing after all, managing just to preserve the wealth of investors....
• No quick sale of RBS and Lloyds 11:31am on 13 Jul 2009 I think this is a pretty good stab by the Government. Much better than the Gold sales that cost us so much when Brown botched them.
  However, the banks are going to be public sector for a long-time. I wonder if the accounting for all this will ever be added up properly.
• Will China be strengthened by adversity? 09:15am on 02 Mar 2009 Robert, the most important thing for the world is whether China plays with its currency or not.
  
  If it holds the Yuan down, then we could have a world wide depression. On the other hand, if they buy gold and stop buying US treasuries that will also cause a depression.
  
  China holds the key to what will happen in much of the world over the next few years.

  State ownership by potentially hostile foreign owners is somehwo less risky than ownership by our pension funds, for all their failings?
