...be it comparisons to Koresh, references to being governed by a "brother" or the church-going folk of North Carolina shouting "Socialist! Socialist! Socialist!" at a man who is promising tax cuts.

It would all make for SNL material - funny, if the USA wasn't so dangerous.
America's answer to Thatcher? 4:38pm on 04 Sep 2008 I imagine Obama's campaign team are shifting bricks at the moment. They would have meticulously planned for most potential GOP strategy, but not the Alaskan Governor.

I have been watching her speeches and imagining if this is the future of US politics, so the question is apt. Is Palin the Thatcher of the US? If McCain wins then I think yes, possibly. She seems a natural player.

It makes me shudder to think that Obama may have been trumped here. I thought sense would at last prevail, if only by default, in the US. I heard a commentator recently describe the Palin family as similar to the American Soap series family, or the Simpsons. I think surrealism may end up prevailing over sense.

I take your point re: James McGrath and what seems like oversensitivity - or as they would say here "PC gone mad."

But as a political advisor to the Mayor of a truly multi-cultural melting pot of a city, it was a sloppy comment.

The Windrush generation, to which he was referring, has heard those very words "go home if you don't like it here" over and over again. It is the statament of British racism, whether McGrath meant is as such or not. As a senior political advisor, he should have known...

Who needs Ohio? 3:23pm on 11 Jun 2008 Fabulous Onion piece, and exploring further I really enjoyed the Mitt Romney 'runs negative ad about himself' story and the 'disturbing love letters from soldiers in Iraq' story. Top newspaper, I should read it more often.

And it strikes me the only sensible way to approach the next 5 months (and the focus of the American voting public's dilemma) is via comedy.

After all you gotta laugh or else you'd cry...

And I certainly wasn't suggesting you were a Muslim. Given you have often here referred to Muslims as people who 'wear soiled nappies on their heads' it would be a foolish mistake to make, no?

I was just noting with irony that this blog piece, having led with an article about combating scurrilous internet rumours, should be immediately followed by your comment which contains the suggestion of smear.

Justcorbly is of course right, the subtext for all this is exactly what we expected since the ridculous TWAgainstT began 7 years ago.

my comment is based on powermeerkat's 'previous' as it were, as well as noting this emphasis people place on Barack Obama's middle name - as if this is somehow a telling clue...

Actually the English cricket team had a captain recently called Nasser Hussein, and we cricket fans did supect him of dubious inclinations towards militant Islamism...

And I guess Mr Meerkat is exactly the sort of person they're targeting when the article mentions the smear that he is:

"some kind of Muslim Manchurian candidate, planted by Islamic fundamentalists to betray the country...".

I like Appleyard's comparison of Sen. Clinton with Mark Anthony - which is exactly how I saw her June 3 speech.

I'm not sure about comparisons with Margaret Thatcher though...
