Let me congratulate you on landing the Football Focus job, but I must admit that I'm somewhat unable to take you seriously due to something I've heard about you, namely that throughout your career, you've refused to work on a Sunday because of your religious beliefs.

So, can you confirm if this is true, and if so, can you explain why you've taken this particular stance?

Furthermore, do you even watch or go to football matches on the Sabbath, or just spend the day praying for the mortal souls of those who actually do?
Welcome to my blog 1:42pm on 05 Mar 2009 I'll be honest, Jake; I've been one of the people who've seen you fronting various BBC Sport programmes and have thought "who on earth is this kids' presenter and what place does he have in fronting big sports events?", and it's clear from your post above that you've recognised that as the stick your critics beat you with and fair do's for trying to answer it here.

You say that you're no less qualified than your predecessors because of your previous TV experience, but for me it's more a question of whether you have the necessary gravitas that fronting these big sports occasions warrant; it was shown clearest to me at the Beijing Olympics when you and Rishi Persad were the two main male presenters, wearing open necked shirts and sitting on a sofa, when only a decade ago it was Desmond Lynam and Steve Rider fully suited sitting behind a desk.

Trouble is, I can't decide whether your appointment is just a part of the growing informalisation of sports coverage - certainly at the BBC, whether it's what the audience wants and whether it's just me being a bit old fashioned - particularly because I'm also not keen on presenters starting on one area of TV and branching out into others, which is why I always had a problem with Adrian Chiles presenting MOTD2 at the same time he was fronting the business programme Working Lunch.

Anyway, regardless of my personal opinions of your presenting style and ability, I wish you good luck for the new season.

Good reasons to stay up late 5:41pm on 28 Jan 2009 A few questions that spring to mind, Roger:

Do you think a factor in the BBC winning the new contract was the Premier League being happy with the MOTD coverage or was it solely down to you offering them the most money?

Do you envisage any changes being made to the format of MOTD or MOTD2 under the new contract?

Are you worried about the status of MOTD being "the first place to watch the day's football" being eroded as more and more people watch the Saturday games live on illegal internet streams?

Does the above photo of Motty illustrate that he was watching a less-than-riveting game at Fratton Park that day?
On and off 5:04pm on 10 Sep 2008 I'd be interested to know, Roger, where you stand on the argument that the pay-TV company who has the Croatia v England rights are setting a deliberately over-inflated price for the highlights in order to force England fans to subscribe to their service.

Olympics brings in impressive audiences across BBC 2:40pm on 11 Aug 2008 Two questions, Roger:

How do the Olympics rights work given that British Eurosport are allowed to show the Games as well as yourselves?

How many people on average tune into the overnight sessions? (this isn't a loaded question, by the way, I am interested to know)

The interactive service has been great, although it's unfortunate that unlike the last games, you didn't put the daily listings in a printable PDF so I've had to buy the Radio Times to get them; what I've mostly enjoyed is the website live page with the video screen at the top and the reports running down from it, which is terrificly useful.

As far as your main coverage goes, I've noticed that you seem to have devoted more time than in previous Games to running features and interviews than live action; do you not feel these are a bit superflous when people like myself can just press the red button and ignore all of these?

I agree with the guy above who said it's a shame that the BBC aren't covering all the sports, but fortunately, as well as yourselves the European Broadcasting Union are running a website streaming live Olympic video - including the events that you aren't showing, so I've been using that to fill the gaps in, so to speak.
How Boardman kickstarted British cycling's bandwagon 7:44pm on 01 Aug 2008 I thought Hugh Porter was commentating on the cycling in Beijing?
