Labour bets on bashing bankers 6:12pm on 28 Sep 2009 "Banker Bashing" is a clear vote-winner.
The public detest the way that City staff have pocketed so much of the nations' wealth, whilst causing so much mayhem.
Why should a City worker earn any more than 250k per year?
Why are they worthy of a country-estate a year?
Soldiers, doctors, surgeons, rig-workers, policemen, energy workers etc....all have an important role in modern society, and for far less money than City workers.
Ludicrous favoritism and gambling in the financial sector has brought the country to its' knees, so bashing bankers is alright with me.
The public will warm to Brown and Co if they bring some hard sense to the City, regardless of any past mistakes.
There are a lot of young people ready to step into the City for a chance to earn over 100k.
"bankers gorging on the carcass of the economy" (Peston line), will simply not do any more.

I don't find that very impressive.
Perhaps he should have asked Vince Cable to be his adviser, then we probably wouldn't be in this mess.

But there is one socially useful aspect.....to enrich the pockets of City workers at everyone elses' expense.
City staff have got to be the most "pampered" lot in the universe.....stick it all in your pocket when the going is good, and when you mess up, everyone else will bail you out......then the government will provide exceptional circumstances for you to ramp up the profits again (at the expense of savers), so you can stick it all in your pocket again.
Consideration for the public....irrelevant.
Major damage to the public good....irrelevant.
Damage to the rest of industry and business.....irrelevant.
Millions of unemployed.....irrelevant.
Wrecked pensions......irrelevant.
As long as those City boys can keep on shovelling it in their pockets, all is well?
I can't see the unions taking too much more of this abuse of privilege.
I thought the financial industry was supposed to be a public service.
The market price of cutting airline emissions 10:53am on 22 Sep 2009 I wonder what percentage of the population don't believe in climate change, or if it is changing, has anything to do with human activities.
The climate changes naturally all the time, due to changes in solar emissions.
And I wonder what percentage of the population think that they are "being had" by slippery politicians, eager to find new taxes, and to justify their own importance.
Last winter was the most visciously cold for many years, with Europe and North America frozen solid for months.
Climate change? I still need much more evidence that it's caused by humans.
Surely by far the greatest source of CO2 is heating, so as temperatures rise, the biggest polluter falls.
Will the folks in 100 years time be laughing at our madness, or sweating it out in Iceland?
Everything seems to have an effect on share prices, so why should carbon dioxide be any different?
And will we still be getting on planes to go on holiday when the British summer average is 80 degrees, and Margate has the climate of Marbella?

We are indeed in a long-term dodgy period.
Keep the champagne in the cupboard for many years.
The recession may be getting better, but it all has to be paid for yet.
Japan learned the hard-way in the 1990s that asset-price bubbles can destroy everything. We will also learn.
We must put a piece of sticky tape over the "greed" button.
And bankers must also respect the rest of the population and tow the moderation line......they are only financial workers.
Everyone (including bankers) should read again Robert Pestons' brilliant article of 31st July 2009..."Who'll be shot when banks misbehave".
Pestons classic line..."bankers gorging on the carcass of the economy like bloated ancien regime aristocrats".....sums it up for me.
Lloyds to cut use of taxpayer insurance 1:25pm on 10 Sep 2009 And I see that Lloyd Blankfein, the chairman of Goldman Sachs no less, is calling for "clawback" of excessive bonuses, and an end to multi-year bonuses in the finance industry.
This guy gets my vote.

Remarkable similarity between then and now.
Amazing how the "herd mentality" can lead us all straight to disaster.
We all piled into it in 1926-29 and we all piled into it in 2004-07.
It's greed of course....capitalisms' great driver and capitalisms' achilles heel.
The Halifax part of Lloyds was also sucked into the "herd mentality, hence the great losses.
In future all bankers and finance ministers should be forced to attend a monthly briefing given by Vince Cable......the risk of future disaster would be greatly reduced.

Why are companies not borrowing? 12:25pm on 09 Sep 2009 Yes, there's a strange mixture of optimism and pessimism around at the moment, liberally laced with plenty of fear.
Perhaps the business community is still in a state of shock.....we nearly hit 1929 again.
Fingers are crossed en masse.
But perhaps the visciously greedy brand of capitalism of 2000 to 2008 is best consigned to history....it all ended in tears.
A more caring community may emerge.
The real G20 breakthrough 1:01pm on 07 Sep 2009 With regard to the "breaking up" of huge institutions.....
I believe that in future there needs to be a clear line drawn in the sand, between what the public WILL bail-out and what the public WON'T bail out.
These large companies need to be re-organised to seperate smaller profit-centres and seperate entities, and it should be set in stone WHICH ones the public will support, and those that are "on their own". (If they fail, they will be put into administration...bankrupted.)
How you do this, I don't know, but the experts do.
This crisis has exposed the vulnerability of the public to recklessness in the City, and that situation must now change.
Whilst I realise that the government is frightened of bankers, they have to address this situation urgently.
The days of the gold-dripping Ferrari-driving country-estate owning City worker must end...the rest of us have clearly been conned....
the mill-press worker from Bolton is now supporting him, and saving the **** of his company.
Roll on Tescos bank, then we can put our hard-earned cash somewhere that is run by sensible folk.
Bankers and the establishment need to stop enriching themselves while the rest of the population go backwards, or some very nasty politics may follow.
