Sir Tim, the web and silos 5:46pm on 23 Apr 2009 Initiatives like Facebook Connect and OpenID are making it possibel to use a single identity across the web and also to take your friends with you from site to site, but uptake is slow -- only technology industry sites have fully embraced it. And remember that the concept is nothing new: Microsoft tried the same thing with Passport 10 years ago and got nowhere, in spite of the volume of Hotmail and MSN users.

The problem is one of trust. People just aren't that comfortable with websites knowing who they are and using their data without explicit consent at every stage, in spite of the conveniences offered.

What Sir Tim describes could be soon possible to do with the right standards in place, but the tech isn't as big a chanllenge as winning the support of users.

Interesting piece Rory. Don't read any slackening in interest in Facebook or MySpace as the party being over for social networking though. Whereas these two have opened up our eyes to social networking, the next wave is more focused sites appealing to specific needs or interest groups. These offer much more relevance for users and a richer bounty for advertisers who, of course, fund all this useful stuff so we don't have to.

Interest for our UK-based business lead and referral network at http://www.wecando.biz as word gets out there. We already have people importing their business contacts from other sites -- and the biggest social graph anyone has, which is their e-mail address book.

I've always considered blogging the work of egomaniacs. Fair enough to share your thoughts and insight with the world (thank you!) if you are getting paid for it, as journalists and columnists do. But to throw it into the ether voluntarily? My view has always been that the "reward" such people hunted down was knowing their word was valued by others - wannabe authors or hacks but with not enough worthwhile to say that anyone would pay for it.

But micro-blogging? What can anyone tell me, in just a few words, that I might find valuable or, to cut that some slack, interesting? "Martin is sitting down to Sunday lunch"? Big deal! This is surely vanity publishing gone mad.

I'm a techie - I run a social networking business - but I don't believe that means my words are worthing interrupting your life for.
