Even assuming the 60Bn eventually gets paid.
How safe is the rest of the pile of sand?
What will all those clever traders be doing when the DFM opens for business?

Will they all be busy trading - just like Enron's were?
Who would trade with them?

I think you may be confusing QE2 with Brittania.

As far as I know Phil the Greek didn't have any equity in the QE2.
Queen Elizabeth the second yes but QE2 no ;-)

Not only does it look like "The City" will now not decamp to the warmer climes of Abu Dhabi so freeing the UK from their grasp, but the UK will end up bailing out the lenders.

We have been truly had. Yet again.
What's next?

What other group of enterprises has been busily hoisting itself up by their own bootstraps? With no real support.

It's a wise man who can see through all the spin.
Particularly when the spin may be deliberately targeted at differing groups of people in different ways.
What is truth? What is a fact? Will it remain a truth over the months/years?

As for the protection scheme. I look upon it as insurance. Hopefully one never needs insurance. One ought to pay for it if you have it though.

Whatever next?
When and how to squeeze the budget 9:01pm on 17 Nov 2009 Oh what a conundrum! Who would be a ruling politician?
Here we are having spent billions of future earnings and we would rather not have to start from here. But we are here.
If we just had to pay back UK debt then we could just tax our way out. But no. We owe the money abroad. Or at least to multinationals that may just as well be abroad.
So how do we get money to send abroad to settle debt?
Do we really need to have a banking industry to attract foreign funds so that we can skim some off to repay our debts?
In the absence of an exporting manufacturing industry we don't have much option.
And of course we are busy sending money to foreign energy companies anyway.
British Energy being owned by EDF. Npower being owned by the RWE. Etc.
So we need financials. We need to create an atmosphere where they can flourish.
Err hang on. Didn't we just do this since the 1980s?
Look where that got us.
But they are all we have got.
We need to support the bankers. You know it makes sense. (That was irony BTW.)
Who wants to be a politician?
Ah, but of course - failed bankers, folk who cannot do anything constructive.
It all starts to make sense.
Here comes taxes and cuts for all except the bankers and political classes.
Grin and bear it.
New name for a new economy? 6:50pm on 16 Nov 2009 I am not convinced that capitalism has changed. Could it be that we have?
Never mind.
Topically since ISIHAC is on the radio as I type, I reckon that the system we suffer under is that of general acclamation. Exactly as performed in Mornington Crescent. Same rules, inbuilt regulations and safeguards.

So general acclamation it is.
