Boxed in 8:02pm on 05 Nov 2009 "Across the global economy, cheap and plentiful money is doing wonders for asset prices. It's also making it easier for governments - especially the British government - to borrow an enormous amount. It's even causing headaches for emerging market governments, as they struggle to cope with shedloads of incoming investor cash."

So, all this make-believe QE money, printed against the collateral of my future taxes, is 'doing wonders' for the casino kids of the markets.

It's making it easier for the un-elected surrender-monkeys of this goverment to sell my country off to the EU while lining their own pockets and pensions at my expense.

What it's not doing is giving me a headache; with not even a pinch of incoming investor cash to get my small business out of the clutches of a bank that doesn't give a flying whotsit if I live or die, as they declare a profit and walk away with a big fat bonus.

The bankers, economists and politicians still haven't got it ......... but maybe soon the real people will take a chance to stand up and make them see the truth.
Drogba inflicts pain on Liverpool 09:52am on 05 Oct 2009 There used to be a theory that Ian Rush would deliberately get himself caught offside with runs that were too early for the first part of games.

Then, with defenders lulled into false security, he would punish them with precision.

Now we have Drogba ..... who throws himself into dramatic contortions on the ground at the very hint that a defender might dare to tackle him.

Then, with defenders assuming that he will only look for the free kick, he runs with the strength of Hercules through any attempt to stop him.

The only difference is that deliberate off-side is not an offence while, allegedly, simulation is supposed to be; one used guile and cunning to win, the other is patently cheating.

Referees should act and, if they don't, the FA must do so.
The Obama and Gordon card 10:25am on 24 Sep 2009 After reports of Alistair Darling's interview with the BBC yesterday, before he flew off to join Team Broon, maybe Gordy is trying to get a meeting with Obama as a way of avoiding being cornered by the Brazilian president:

"Mr Darling's (NEW BIG) idea is to also have a blacklist of countries that are regulatory havens where the rules and regulations companies have to follow are less onerous.
'People can set up in the Caribbean or South America, the regulators here can't get the sort of information they want and that sort of secrecy leads to instability,' he said."
What could/would/should central banks have done? 09:58am on 24 Sep 2009 Just don't tell the G20 ? ? ?

Too late, Stephanie, to tell our own G20 numpties anything.

Up 'til now the blame has been "global" with the occasional singling out of US sub-primes.

Obviously, the first one is no longer believable and the second one is not politically acceptable, especially after the Lockerbie nudge-nudge wink-wink fiasco.

Nice to see, though, that we've found the new Bond-villan to put in the cross hairs:

When I read the first paragraph I thought he was about to hoist the white flag, offer unconditional surrender or blame it all on ten years of his predecessor.

When I read the second paragraph I had to pick myself up off the floor, in fits of laughter, at the thought of all those London bankers in their red braces flying off to Rio to set up shop.

I do hope Gordon can arrange a bilateral meeting with the Brazilian president to explain that the whole problem is HIS ! !
Brown puts Trident on table 06:56am on 23 Sep 2009 "Gordon Brown will tell that meeting that he is CONSIDERING cutting the number of submarines which carry Britain's Trident nuclear missiles."

"As soon as it becomes useful for our arsenal to be included in a broader NEGOTIATION, Britain stands ready to participate and to act."

"offering to REVIEW or delay plans to renew Trident if the big nuclear powers agree major cuts in their arsenals."

Since most government "reviews" take upwards of a year (costing umpteen million pounds) and, I assume, a "considering" or "negotiation" will fall into the same category, this is just another "BROWN TALKS AND DOES NOTHING" story.
When panic shapes policy 08:36am on 15 Sep 2009 While so many are discussing the groups of people who will have to be registered, a few that may have been missed out:

1 - Restaurant/Pub staff, whether in the local chippy, McD's or anywhere else, if they allow entry to children and they are unaccompanied or allowed leave from their parents table.

2 - Amusement parks, whether they be the large theme parks around the country or the travelling units including circuses, children form a huge proportion of their audience and often unaccompanied.

3 - Shop staff, whether they be large supermarket or local newsagent, if unaccompanied-child access is allowed they will come under the act.

The 11 million sounds an understated amount to me and, let's not forget, that the biggest abuse risk to all children lies in their own home and family circle.

This is all adding up to something bigger than a sledgehammer being used to crack a sunflower seed.
When panic shapes policy 08:30am on 15 Sep 2009 Monday: The chairman of the quango setting up this scheme on behalf of the Home Office did his best impersonation of somebody selling dodgy car insurance telling us all to “calm down, dear”.

Tuesday; The Childrens’ Secretary admits that the scheme needs to be re-thought (what used to be called a balls-up, perhaps) but pointed out all the failings already highlighted by opposition parties as if they were good things.

Nice to see that government spin, bumble and incompetence is not something that only happens at the Treasury and Downing St.
Why are companies not borrowing? 09:59am on 10 Sep 2009 So the patient has stopped screaming in agony, but only because he has fallen into a coma.

Meanwhile, the doctor steals the man's wallet and orders up flowers for the room to confirm his diagnosis that the patient must be on the way to recovery.
Berlino the Bear - love him or loathe him? 2:18pm on 22 Aug 2009 Berlino proves what many of us have known for years, the Germans have a really great sense of humour.

Too many comments on here prove that the British don't, .... unless they're the ones making the joke, of course !
Business still being crunched by banks 07:08am on 25 Jul 2009 "Right now we appear to be as far from ever (as far AS ever?) from reconciling the conflict between the short-term imperative that banks lend more, in order that the recession isn't too prolonged,...."

Translation: things need to look better quickly because Labour have an election to try and win.

".... with the equally important long-term imperative that they lend considerably less".

Translation: once the election is over they, whoever is in charge, will have to pull the plug on over-lending to stave off bankruptcy, but will have 5 years to properly sort the mess out.

Robert, it would appear the banks HAVE learned their lesson, while our government is still a bunch of short-term chancers.
