Making the case 12:49pm on 02 Jun 2008 Nobody - whether pro independence or not - could possibly deny that the benefits that one might think would have accrued from the discovery and development of N Sea oil and gas have just not materialised either in Scottish or UK terms.

The N Sea has without a shadow of a doubt a lost opportunity and the Treasury should be ashamed of itself.

In my view loosing RBS would be no great problem. It would provide the opportunity to create a new bank that works in Scotland's interest not that of the City.
HBOS, UBS and Sants 4:50pm on 21 May 2008 Given the very special position of bankers in relation to the health of the overall economy it is surely far too simple to suggest that the size of their bonus should depend on how well or otherwise the bank they actually work for is doing.

Perhaps it would be much better if bonuses were connected to other indicators such as the size of the trade deficit.

Soros shorts UK 11:07am on 20 May 2008 Soros's comment that we are over dependent on the financial services sector is of course something that anyone with an iota of understanding of economics and industrial strategy realised a long time ago.

What is worrying though is that as yet Govt doesn't seem prepared to do anything about it.

What I saw was a very rattled Gordon Brown whose only defence was to rant and rave.
Innocent merriment 09:19am on 01 May 2008 Shonaig Macpherson is also chair of ITI Scotland an organisation which has summarily failed to achieve any of it's objectives and would appear to be being managed in such a way that it's benefit to to Scotland is minimised.

I used to think think this was just utter incompetence.

However, it now seems likely that as a unionist Macpherson has an interest in seeing it fail.
HBOS's massive u-turn 11:52am on 29 Apr 2008 I see lots of problems with this Govt in particular getting involved in saving a bunch of banks that have done such huge harm to the UK economy.

When will we wake up and realise that we need new banks.

Reminds of the comment recently on Radio 4.

And I'm afraid that sums up the real usefulness of the UK banks... Makes me laugh that it wasn't that long ago that the Director General of the CBI was complaining quite rightly that we weren't creating anything like enough companies... He said something along the lines that the number of new companies we'd created in the past 25 years was pathetic...

Now the CBI is screaming that the banks need saving..... They obviously haven't quite yet managed to put two and two together and realised that actually the low number of new companies might just be connected in part at least, to the attitude and intellectual capability of the banks.
RBS rebuilds 3:31pm on 22 Apr 2008 It's simple.

We desparately need some new banks that will work with us to help grow the economy. The current crop have completely lost the plot.
