Blistering batsman who knew when to go 09:04am on 14 Jan 2009 The media reaction to Warner is very much like the treatment dished out to Matt Hayden recently - basically every player is judged solely on their last performance. For weeks the media here has been calling for Hayden's head, conveniently forgetting his outstanding record. Now he has gone they bemoan the void left. No one had heard of Warner last week and he is now being touted as the next test opener on the strength of one innings in a hit and giggle game. The Pietersen debacle may not have done much for England's morale but the pressure to perform on the Aussies, particulalrly now the side is in transition will take it's toll on them too.
As to Hayden - great stats but also great timing - playing for a strong team at a tme when the game has never been more batsman friendly.

There is an advert for the cricket still running on TV here imploring fans to show up since there is "nothing like watching the Ausies flog the Proteas." Talk about arrogance. It made watching the flogging of the Aussies by the Proteas even more satisfying. And no I won't be leaving the country since allegiance to the national team is not a condition of my visa.

He is paid to report news. By the BBC. For the BBC. Not to air personal views. It is thus not unreasonable for no 5 to expect to come to this page and read news about Australia. He is perfectly entitled to ask Mr Bryant to report on a wider range of issues. I expect Mr Bryant would like to oblige. Equally I expect Mr Bryant's masters have an eye on their budget and that it doesn't extend to investigative journalism.

A look at the map would show that Casula is some distance from the centre of Sydney and I guess most people reading the blog of the Australia correspondent of a UK based broadcast corporation would understand 'in Sydney' to mean near the centre.

As to the current article - the homeless world cup is a worthy event to report on, especially at this time of year but how about a bit more reportage on homlessness in Australia?
